Indian cricket fraternity mourns death of Dilip Doshi

The Hindu3 hours ago

A 'heartbroken' Indian cricket fraternity came together in grief and reverence to pay tribute to former left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who died following a cardiac arrest in London.
Despite spending much of his early career in the shadow of the great Bishan Singh Bedi, Doshi carved a niche for himself with his unwavering resolve. He died at the age of 77 on Monday.
Leading the tributes for him was the great Sachin Tendulkar, who recalled his first meeting with the 'warm-hearted' Doshi during a tour of the UK in 1990.
'I met Dilip bhai for the first time in the UK in 1990, and he bowled to me in the nets on that tour. He was really fond of me, and I reciprocated his feelings.
'A warm-hearted soul like Dilip bhai will be deeply missed. I will miss those cricketing conversations which we invariably had. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti,' Tendulkar posted on X.
Former India all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri, who shared the field with Doshi, remembered him as 'always immaculate, a gentleman to the core and a fine, fine bowler'.
'Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace. Really sad to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi.' Doshi made his Test debut in 1979 after Bedi's retirement and played the last of his 33 games in 1983. In those matches, he took 114 wickets with six five-wicket hauls and was exceptional at home during the first three seasons, completing 100 scalps in just 28 Tests.
Bowled over!
Former India cricketer and selector Sunil Joshi also a left-arm spinner like Doshi shared a poignant memory.
'Still can't believe it, we spoke just last Wednesday, and he sounded well. Heartbroken by the passing of Dilip Doshi Sir a legend on the field,a true gentleman off it, he meant a lot to me, and this loss is deeply personal. My heartfelt condolences to Nayan & the Doshi family,' Joshi tweeted.
Former India captain Anil Kumble, who was among the first to pay his tribute to the late cricketer, too, expressed his sorrow: 'Heartbreaking to hear about Dilip bhai's passing. May God give strength to his family and friends to bear this loss. Nayan, thinking of you buddy.' Former Indian keeper-batter Parthiv Patel wrote, 'I'm heartbroken and still in shock about Dilip uncle...he was truly special. Nayan (Doshi's son), thinking of you all with love and strength.' Manoj Tiwary echoed the collective sense of loss.
'It's a shock! India's legendary cricketer Dilip Doshi passed away at the age of 77 due to a cardiac arrest in London. May God give his family and close ones the strength to deal with this. May his soul rest in peace.' Former cricketers Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh also paid their respects.
'Saddened to hear about the passing of Dilip Doshi sir, a distinguished left-arm spinner who served Indian cricket with grace and grit. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace,' said Ojha.
'RIP Dilip Doshi sir Condolences to family,' Harbhajan wrote.

‘Please stop. Nothing changed': Sitanshu Kotak theory gets reality check from fans over ‘visible shift' in batting claim

Five centuries, two of which belonged to Rishabh Pant, and 853 runs across two innings that gave India a realistic chance at getting off to the tour of England with a 1-0 lead in Leeds, and securing a 23-year first at the venue sparked a significant theory from former Indian batter Priyank Panchal. However, he instantly received a reality check from social media users, who showed him the larger picture and told him to show patience. India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak Kotak was brought on board after India's horrid batting performance at home against New Zealand and a series defeat in Australia last season. The BCCI selectors moved away from Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach who looked over the batting department, and added the domestic giant, who has mentored India A on several tours. Ahead of the England tour, there were apprehensions about the batting unit's lack of experience, especially after the sudden retirements of senior batter Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But India quickly shut the talks around them after the team clobbered 853 runs in two innings, with centuries from captain Shubman Gill, his deputy Pant, and openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. ALSO READ: ICC punishes Rishabh Pant for 'showing dissent' at umpire during India vs England Leeds Test - Here's what happened On Tuesday, ahead of the start of the fifth and final day in Leeds, Panchal shared a lengthy post crediting Kotak for the "visible shift" in India's batting and deemed him an unsung hero during this transition phase. Panchal wrote: "There's been a visible shift in India's batting temperament since that forgettable tour of Australia. Less drama, more clarity. Less noise, more intent. And quietly playing a pivotal role in that transition is Sitanshu Kotak, a man who never grabbed headlines as a player, but whose deep understanding of the Indian cricketing psyche is finally making headlines for the right reasons. Kotak wasn't a flashy name on the circuit, but in domestic cricket, he was a titan. Someone who knew how to score runs in Rajkot heat or on a green top in Mohali. That exposure, to Indian conditions, temperaments, and dressing room moods, is his real asset. His role in the India A system earlier gave him an early peek into the next-gen stars. Now, as a batting coach for the senior team, he's doing something rarer by understanding the personality of each batter and tailoring inputs accordingly. That's coaching with empathy. That's coaching with context. There's a lesson here for every corporate setup. Sometimes, the best mentors aren't the ones who have conquered global stages, but those who have toiled in the trenches and know the system inside-out. Kotak's rise reminds us that internal talent, when nurtured, retained, and empowered, can become the most valuable asset during transitions. Next time you are hiring externally, ask yourself, is there a Kotak in the ranks, quietly adding value, just waiting to be trusted?" However, his followers instantly gave his theory a reality check. While most told him to show patience before jumping to conclusions, given that it was only India's first game in the transition phase, others highlighted the two batting collapses in the two innings, especially pointing towards the unimpressive show from the tail-end. India's batting collapses in Leeds The visitors looked destined to cross the 500-run mark after centuries from Gill, Jaiswal and Pant. But in a matter of session, India crumbled from 430 for three to 471 all out. A similar story followed in the next innings, where the final six wickets went for just 31 runs. While experts will have their go at India's batting after the result in Leeds, the tourists do have a genuine chance at taking an early lead in the five-match series, having set a target of 371. England have 350 runs more to chase with all 10 wickets in hand.

Rishabh Pant reprimanded by ICC for on-field reaction during Leeds Test: All you need to know

Indian batter Rishabh Pant has officially been reprimanded by the International Cricket council for his conduct during the ongoing Leeds Test at Headingley. As per the official ICC website, Pant was found to have breached the Article 2.8 of ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which is related to "showing dissent at an Umpire's decision during an International Match." One demerit point has been added to Pant's disciplinary record after the charges were brought in by the on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, along with third umpre Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Mike Burns. The incident occured during the 61st over of the English innings when Harry Brook and Ben Stokes were batting. Pant - who is also the Indian vice-captain - was having a discussion with the umpres regarding the condition of the ball. However, the umpires decided not to change the ball and the wicket-keeper showed his disappointment by showing the ball on the ground. There was no disciplinary hearing on the matter since Pant admitted to the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of ICC Match Refrees. Notably, this was the first offence by Pant in the last 24 months. A Level 1 breach of ICC Code of Conduct arries a minimum penalty of official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player's match fee along with one or two demerit points on their record. Apart from his controversy with the umpires, Pant also made the headlines with his centuries in both the innings of the Test match. The left handed batter played a 134 run knock in the first innings and a 118 run knock in the second innings of the match. The Indian vice-captain along with KL Rahul helped his side post a fourth innings total of 364 runs that has put the visitors in a commanding position going into the fifth day of the Test match.

Suniel Shetty Lauds KL Rahul On Scoring A Century Against England: 'Proud Of You Son'

Published By : Chirag Sehgal IANS Last Updated: Suniel Shetty took to Instagram, where he shared a picture of Rahul from the test match and praised his game. Actor Suniel Shetty is a 'proud" father-in-law as his cricketer son-in-law scored a century against England at the Test Match at the Headingley Stadium in Leeds. Suniel took to Instagram, where he shared a picture of Rahul from the test match and wrote: 'A knock that spoke less, but said everything Proud of you son KL Rahul." He then shared a picture of star cricketer Rishabh Pant, who turned out to be the second with 118 against England on the fourth day of the match, after scoring 134 in the first innings. Pant has become the first Indian batter to score hundreds in both innings of a Test in England. The actor wrote: 'Two innings. Two centuries. One fearless heart. Rishabh Pant." Suniel went on to share a post which mentioned that 'Rahul communicated with Sai in Tamil, with Pant in Hindi and Karun Nair in Kannada. After the stumps, he'll speak with the broadcasters in English." To which, Suniel wrote: 'Proudly Indian." Outstanding centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant have put India in command of the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test as they ensured the lead went past 300 on June 23. At tea, India's lead read as 304 runs, with their second innings scorecard reading as 298/4 in 75 overs, as 145 runs came off the second session, as Rahul and Pant pounced on the old ball and England looked very short on ideas. While Rahul was at his composed self to be unbeaten on 120, his ninth Test hundred laced with 15 boundaries, Pant was at his scintillating best to smash 118 – his eighth century in the format, aided by 15 boundaries and three sixes. Before the 195-run stand between Rahul and Pant happened in Headingley, the duo had previously hit centuries while being in a partnership at The Oval in 2018. Pant also smashed many records – becoming the first wicketkeeper and fifth batter from India to score two hundreds in the same Test match in overseas conditions. First Published:
