Iran-Israel war opens ‘new road' for Mideast: US envoy to Turkiye
ISTANBUL: The Iran-Israel war has opened the way to a 'new road' for the Middle East in which Turkiye will have a key role to play, Washington's envoy to Turkiye said Sunday.
'What just happened between Israel and Iran is an opportunity for all of us to say: 'Time out. Let's create a new road' (and) Turkiye is key in that new road,' Ambassador Tom Barrack told the Anadolu state news agency.
'The Middle East is ready to have a new dialogue, people are tired of the same old story,' he said, saying it was essential for decades-long enmities to be reframed.
Israel, he said, was 'in the process of being redefined' and its regional neighbours needed to reach agreement with it.
'(Syrian) President (Ahmed) al-Sharaa has indicated that he doesn't hate Israel and that he wants peace on that border. I think that will also happen with Lebanon. It's a necessity to have an agreement with Israel,' he said.

What is happening in Syria is 'in big part due to Turkiye' – a key backer of the Islamist-led rebels who toppled Bashar al-Assad and now form the Damascus government – and Turkiye could play a central role in changing the regional narrative, he said.
US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan 'see that this is an opportunity at a really interesting point in both of their lives where they can change the dialogue,' he said.
'And dialogue in the Middle East takes strong leadership.'
Barrack also said he believed there would be a ceasefire soon in the deadly Gaza war which would also speed up a shift in regional thinking.
'We're going to see a ceasefire in Gaza in the near future, I think we have the right team on it,' he told Anadolu.
'Everybody is starting to move back towards the Abraham Accords, especially as the Gaza situation dissipates,' he said referring to the US-sponsored agreements struck by Israel to normalise ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco.
And he expressed confidence that Turkiye and Israel – whose relationship has been shattered by the Gaza war – would resume their former ties.
'It can happen again, it's not a religious issue, it's a misunderstanding of territorial desires. So having a discussion, a dialogue.. will take place.'

Tessori informed that over 50,000 youth have benefited from the modern IT training provided at Governor House. Highlighting various social and development projects, he emphasized transforming Governor House into a true 'People's Governor House,' accessible to the public. Despite constitutional limitations, he stressed his commitment to social welfare through personal interest and community engagement. Tessori stated that 6,000 children in various government schools are provided daily breakfast, and 25,000 individuals receive meals from Governor House. He mentioned that 14 Governor Initiatives are actively underway, including climate change initiatives and a tree planting campaign, under which over 16,000 saplings have been planted. Terming the youth as the nation's most valuable asset, he said they represent 62% of Pakistan's population and are the real hope for national development. The Governor further added that the IT curriculum is being extended from Karachi to Hyderabad, and incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) education into professional training is crucial.

France offers to help make Gaza food distribution safer
PARIS: France 'stands ready, Europe as well, to contribute to the safety of food distribution' in the Palestinian territory of Gaza, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Saturday. His comments came as criticism grew over mounting civilian deaths at Israeli-backed food distribution centres in the territory. Such an initiative, he added, would also deal with Israeli concerns that armed groups such as Hamas were getting hold of the aid. Barrot expressed anger over 'the 500 people who have lost their life in food distribution' in Gaza in recent weeks. California approves $750m film tax boost
Hollywood's home state of California will more than double annual tax incentives for film and television production to $750 million under a measure passed by the Democratic-led legislature on Friday, Reuters reported. The increase from the current $330 million was approved as part of a broader tax bill that is expected to be signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in the coming days. Democrat Newsom had advocated for the boost, a step to help reverse a years-long exodus of production from California to places such as Britain, Canada and other US states that offer generous tax credits and rebates. Producers, directors, actors and behind-the-scenes workers have warned lawmakers that Hollywood was at risk of becoming the next Detroit, the automaking capital devastated by overseas competition, if current trends continued. Permitting data showed production in Los Angeles, the location of major studios including Walt Disney and Netflix, fell to the second-lowest level on record in 2024. California has lost more than 17,000 jobs since 2022 from its declining share of the entertainment industry, according to union estimates. Producer Uri Singer said he shot three films in New York to take advantage of its tax incentives. He received a California tax credit to shoot his current project, a horror flick called Corporate Retreat, in Los Angeles. "You can get such good cast and crew that are available that makes shooting in LA financially better," he said. "Besides that, creatively you find here anyone you want, and if you need another crane, within an hour you have a crane." Plus, "the crew is happy because they go home every day," Singer added. Industry supporters also are pushing for federal tax incentives to keep filming in the United States. Republican President Donald Trump has offered a different way to address the issue.
