Green Road: Egypt plants 1250 trees along routes leading to natural reserves

CAIRO - 13 February 2025: During the first phase of the "Green Road" initiative, a total of 1,250 trees were planted along the roads leading to the entrances of the natural reserves, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Environment on Thursday.
The Green Road Initiative is part of the presidential initiative "100 Million Trees,' launched in cooperation between the Ministry of Environment, the Youth Foundation for Development and Creativity, the Arab Network for Development (Raed), and the Mediterranean Cooperation Center of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The initiative involves planting trees along roads leading to the entrances of natural reserves in Fayoum Governorate, which are frequented by migratory birds.
A plan was developed to plant the entrances to the Wadi El-Rayan and Qarun reserves, marking a step toward promoting sustainable development and creating a clean, healthy environment for future generations.
The first phase of the initiative saw the planting of 150 mulberry and poinciana trees in the Ashtum El-Gamil Reserve, 250 cucumber and mulberry trees in the Wadi El-Rayan Reserve, and 850 trees along the road to the Qarun Reserve. These efforts are aimed at improving vegetation cover and enhancing biodiversity in the local environment.
Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad confirmed that the road leading to the Qarun Reserve was planted with 850 Omani mulberry and Shambar cucumber trees, with the participation of 100 volunteers from 17 African nationalities.
The "Green Road" initiative aims to enhance ecosystem sustainability, improve air quality, and create an environment that supports wildlife. It also seeks to promote environmental awareness and bolster ecotourism, ultimately supporting environmental sustainability in Egypt.

She also congratulated Egypt's Environment Minister, Dr. Yasmine Fouad, on her recent appointment as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification — a role Panova said reflects Egypt's increasing influence in international environmental governance. She credited Fouad's leadership for embedding climate priorities into the heart of Egypt's development agenda, particularly through her chairing of the national Climate Change Committee under the Prime Minister's office. Panova noted that the new dialogue initiative will engage local communities across Egypt, ensuring that climate strategies reflect the concerns and needs of those most directly impacted. She emphasized the UN's full support, adding that the process is already benefiting from a wide-ranging collaboration involving multiple UN agencies and Egyptian stakeholders. One of the dialogue's guiding tools will be the Climate Change Perception Survey, conducted under the leadership of researcher Dr. Magued Osman. The survey captured public attitudes toward climate issues and will help shape the discussions taking place across 18 governorates. Panova emphasized that real solutions will emerge from the people themselves, not from distant policymakers. 'Policies written in air-conditioned offices cannot solve a crisis that unfolds under the blazing sun,' she said. 'The answers lie with those living the reality of climate change.' Egypt, Japan, UNIDO launch ‘Reduce It' campaign to raise awareness of single-use plastic bag hazards
CAIRO – 1 June 2025: Egypt's Ministry of Environment will launch a new awareness campaign titled 'Reduce It' on Sunday, aimed at educating the public about the environmental dangers of single-use plastic bags. The campaign is being launched in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). According to a statement released by the Ministry on Saturday, the campaign seeks to promote awareness of the harmful impacts of single-use plastic bags and encourage the adoption of safer, more eco-friendly alternatives. The initiative aligns with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5. The launch event will be attended by several dignitaries, including Japanese Ambassador to Egypt Iwai Fumio, who will deliver the opening remarks, and Patrick Jean Gilabert, UNIDO's Regional Representative in Cairo. The campaign officially will also be announced during the event. In addition, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir are scheduled to speak. As part of the event, Sharm El Sheikh, in South Sinai, will be officially recognized as the first Egyptian city to join the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Global Network of Sustainable Cities. Highlighting the urgency of the campaign, a report released in April 2024 by the Egyptian Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) revealed that Egypt consumed approximately 5 million tons of single-use plastic products during the 2022/2023 fiscal year. Globally, the report stated that only 10 percent of the estimated 7 billion tons of plastic waste is recycled. The remaining waste ends up polluting the environment, incinerated, or buried unsustainably—often transported thousands of kilometers—contributing to an estimated $300–$600 billion in annual economic damage. The proliferation of plastic pollution has been linked to severe harm to ecosystems and human health.
