Small boats? Now migrants are coming by luxury yacht, writes SUE REID. So are the numbers arriving EVEN WORSE than we think?

A luxury yacht named Tacoma sailed out of a smart French marina in April, supposedly for a jaunt along the Brittany coast.
The sleek blue and white vessel worth £70,000 had been hired by man with an Austrian passport from a reputable boat charter company operating at a quayside office in Brest.
'The renter's credentials were checked by us,' Valery Roue, co-owner of the Eridan charter company, told the Mail this week.
'His passport, his identity details, his maritime certificate. Everything seemed in order. This Austrian hired the yacht for a two-week local sailing holiday with friends. Or that is what he told us.'
What actually happened next to the six-berth Tacoma is a shocking tale that exposes how pleasure yachts hired in France are being stolen by criminal gangs to bring illegal migrants here.
Today, the 'Austrian' who hired the vessel has disappeared. He is being hunted by British and French police across Europe and the Balkans because one of the documents he used for the yacht hire shows he originally hails from North Macedonia.
Far from pottering along the Brittany coast, the 23ft yacht was soon spotted by Monsieur Roue, using a vessel tracking device, leaving French waters to head for Cornwall.
He alerted the UK Border Force who pounced on the yacht as it reached the mouth of the Helford River, near Newquay, on Sunday, April 13.
Hiding inside the cabin were 17 Albanian migrants, including one woman, hoping to slip illegally into Britain. They are thought to have been picked up by the Tacoma from a secret location along the Brittany coast soon after the yacht sailed from Brest with three men, including a skipper, on board.
Roue explained: 'I became suspicious after my yacht left Brest. I watched its route and found her sailing across the Channel. Border Force stopped it at Newquay but the "Austrian" was not there.'
This week, we found the Tacoma back in Brest, a couple of hundred yards from Roue's office. After 52 days impounded in Cornwall by Border Force, she was sailed back to France by a crew from the charter company a few days ago.
The incident has led British and French immigration authorities to sound the alarm over French charter yachts being targeted to bring migrants into the UK.
A 'high alert' has been sent out by the French customs authority to all charter boat companies along the Brittany coast, warning them to be vigilant about migrant- smuggling gangs who may try to hire, or simply steal, their yachts.
Meanwhile, British Border Force is using extra surveillance to check pleasure craft arriving at UK ports, private marinas and remote inlets from France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The force is responsible for securing the 11,000 miles of British coastline. 'We patrol 24/7, carrying out proactive, as well as reactive, operations,' Charlie Eastaugh, its director of maritime, told the BBC after the Tacoma incident.
But he added that there are hundreds of harbours and marinas in the UK, and it would not be a reasonable expectation to have a 'fixed presence' in all of them.
A recent BBC exposé about a British ex-soldier and yachtsman known by the pseudonym of Nick, who smuggled hundreds of clandestine passengers – many Albanian and Vietnamese – into private marinas at seaside towns across south-east England, had also identified 'vulnerabilities' in the system, said Mr Eastaugh.
A Home Office statement about the Tacoma migrants explained: 'This case shows that while small-boat Channel crossings remain under close scrutiny, people- smuggling gangs are adapting their methods, using pleasure craft to try to evade detection.'
The Mail has discovered that this vessel is not the only Brittany yacht used for migrant journeys this spring. On May 8, according to authorities, a second vessel hired at a marina 14 miles from the picturesque French port of La Trinite-sur-Mer was found abandoned near Falmouth, Cornwall.
The yacht was 'very similar in design and size to the Tacoma' and it is suspected that illegals on board simply jumped off on arrival and disappeared into the UK.
Our French sources told us those on this second vessel are also likely to have been from Albania, a country whose citizens now face deportation from the UK if they arrive on smugglers' small boats across the Channel.
'They are prepared to pay for a yacht crossing because they do not want to be caught up in the lengthy British asylum system or deported. Most pay huge prices to enter Britain secretly by sea to work on the black market or survive by crime,' they added.
The Albanian passengers on the Tacoma have been interviewed by police from the National Crime Agency – Britain's FBI – by immigration authorities and Border Force officers.
They are likely to face deportation. Meanwhile, an investigation is under way into the crew who sailed the boat to Britain.
Two of them are Albanian men in their 30s who have been named publicly and pleaded guilty in April at Bodmin magistrates' court to breaching previous UK deportation orders. They are due to be sentenced in the near future.
As for the missing 'Austrian' mastermind of the Tacoma operation (which stood to reap £250,000 from the migrants on board), he may never be found.
The passport and maritime certificate he handed over to Mr Roue's charter boat company could have been faked or stolen.
'They looked genuine, but we just don't know,' Mr Roue said. 'Although I was the person who alerted your British Border Force, it has charged us for every day the Tacoma was impounded in Cornwall during a police investigation.
'When we sailed the yacht back, she was in good order considering how many Albanian migrants were found below deck on a sea journey that takes at least 20 hours.'
His company has been operating boat charters for nearly 40 years. 'This is the first time that we have had a yacht taken by gangsters.

EXCLUSIVE My sick father started raping me when I was nine and told me he was 'preparing me for marriage'. When I confessed to my little sister at 14, I learnt of horrors I could never have imagined

Two sisters have revealed their childhood agony after their sick father repeatedly raped them both, telling them he was helping them 'prepare to be good wives'. Taylor-Rae Eason, 22, and her sister Chloe, 20, were subject to a horrific campaign of sexual abuse from Mark Jones, who was jailed in April for 24 years. After carrying out depraved assaults on his daughters, Jones would tell them the abuse was 'just a way of life' for girls - and offered them measly cash incentives to keep quiet. Now safe in the knowledge her father is behind bars and now a parent herself, Taylor, from South Wales, has opened up about the horrific ways in which Jones inflicted his cruel campaign upon his children. 'Growing up, Dad was my world,' she said. 'I loved him so much before he unleashed hell on me and my sister. He'd take us to the cinema or for picnics. He was a great dad.' Jones and the girls' mother split up when they were children, but the sisters still spent every weekend at their beloved father's house. But Taylor's image of her doting dad was shattered when she turned nine and he began to prey upon her. One day, he sent Chloe, then seven, to the park next to his house with a friend. 'While we watched TV in the living room Dad suddenly began tickling me all over,' Taylor recounted. 'Out of nowhere he grabbed my privates and told me I was "beautiful". 'I was so confused and wondered if it was what dads did.' The following weekend, Jones sent Chloe to the park again. When Taylor mentioned she needed some money for summer clothes, he told her: 'If you play a game with me, I'll give you some'. 'I figured he meant a game of chess,' she continued. 'But he had something else in mind. 'Moments later, he pulled down his trousers and boxers. Walking up to me, I froze as he pressed his privates into me. 'I told him I didn't want to but he said that "this is what dads do to daughters to get them ready for their husbands". Though it felt wrong, I trusted him.' Before long, the sexual abuse became routine for Taylor, who was also forced to touch her abuser. Taylor recounted one instance where she was painfully assaulted - and could do nothing but wait for the horror to end. 'He undressed me and pushed his fingers inside me. I told him it hurt but he carried on without a word,' she explained. 'He didn't care I was in pain. So, I looked up at the white swirls on the ceiling. Gritted my teeth until he was finished.' As Taylor lived out a nightmare at the hands of her abuser, she had no idea that he was also preying upon Chloe too. 'Whenever Chloe was in bed asleep, or downstairs playing, he'd pounce,' Taylor revealed. Even forced me to sleep next to him in his pull-out bed in our room.' The constant assaults began to affect Taylor's education as she started playing truant. 'I hated going to Dad's, but with Mum working long hours as a carer, I had no choice,' she added. In 2017 when Taylor was 14 years old, a sex education class confirmed her worst fears - that she was being abused by her father. That night, she confided in Chloe. 'When I told her weird stuff was happening in Dad's bedroom, she started to cry,' Taylor recalled. 'When she admitted he was hurting her sexually, too, I was horrified.' Chloe went on to tell her sister how her dad had started abusing her when she was six. Together, they devised a plan to tell their mother and confront Jones. However, when the sisters warned their father they were going to speak up about the abuse, they were left frightened. 'He flew into a rage, claimed no one would believe us. Terrified, we kept quiet,' Taylor said. That day the girls bought cannabis and smoked it for the first time. Jones used this as a way to continue abusing his daughters. 'Weeks later, after running out of drugs, I went to his,' she recounted. 'He said he'd buy me more but I had to do something for him first. 'I laid down on the bed and he climbed on top of me, forcing himself inside me. All I could do was stare at the ceiling as he raped me.' Afterwards, Jones handed Taylor £60. For the next two years, he continued to use his daughters and offered them cash in exchange for silence. In 2017, he took the girls on a holiday to Wales, which they 'reluctantly' agreed to as long as they could bring some friends. 'One evening, with everyone else at the arcades, Dad made me stay behind in the chalet,' Taylor explained. 'Offered me £40 spending money while he undid his trousers. 'I knew what he meant and he raped me again.' It wasn't until April 2020 that the truth emerged, after Chloe confessed everything to their mother - with Taylor finally admitting she was a victim too. 'Mum was beside herself,' the older sister said. 'Said it was her fault, but she wasn't to know.' The following week they reported Jones to the police and gave their statements - he denied the charges. In August 2021, Taylor fell pregnant - which she says 'saved her'. 'When my son was born, he was my reason to keep going,' she admitted. Due to Covid-19 delays the sisters had to endure a five-year wait before the case went to court - but in November 2024, the sisters bravely took turns giving evidence via video link. In April of this year, at Cardiff Crown Court, Jones, 65, from Barry, was found guilty of two counts of rape and five counts of sexual assault against Taylor. He was convicted of three counts of rape and one of attempted rape, as well as five counts of assault by penetration and four of causing a child to engage in sexual activity against Chloe. 'When the guilty verdict was in, Chloe called to deliver it,' she recalled. 'We were so emotional, having justice after so long. 'Dad was supposed to keep me and my sister safe. Instead, he hurt us in the sickest way. 'Now that he's been jailed we finally have justice. Knowing he'll die behind bars gives me some comfort. 'I want other survivors to know it's never too late for justice.'

Two Muslim 13-year-olds are jailed for raping girl, 12, because she was Jewish - hurling anti-Semitic insults and death threats throughout attack

Two Muslim teenagers, both 13, have been jailed for the gang rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl, where they uttered 'death threats' and 'anti-Semitic remarks'. During a trial at a juvenile court in Nanterre, which took place behind closed doors, heard how the three boys approached the young girl near a park in northwest Paris on June 15, 2024. The 12-year-old investigators she was dragged into an abandoned building in La Défense, the financial district in Courbevoie, Paris where the suspects beat and 'forced' her to have sex 'while uttering death threats and anti-Semitic remarks'. She said the boys had called her a 'dirty Jew' and asked her questions about 'her Jewish religion' and Israel. The rape was filmed by one boy, and another threatened to kill the girl if she reported the ordeal to authorities, police sources said. Two boys were then indicted for 'gang rape, death threats, and insults and violence of an anti-Semitic nature', and have since been sentenced to nine and seven years behind bars. The presiding judge justified the harsh sentence against the two boys as being due to their 'worrying' personalities, 'the immense social disturbance' they caused to society, and the crime being committed on religious grounds. She undoubtedly 'would not have been raped if she had not been Jewish', the judge said. A third boy, who was also aged 12 at the time, was found guilty of being complicit in the crime but not sentenced to time behind bars due to the minimum age of criminal liability in France being 13. The court ordered that he be placed in the foster system and followed by professionals for five years. According to Bild, he had filmed the rape and sent it to the 12-year-old's boyfriend alongside the message: 'Look at your girlfriend.' According to Le Parisien, anti-Semitic images and messages were also found on the victim's phone by investigators. The attack shocked the Jewish community in France and was unanimously condemned by politicians. At the time, President Emmanuel Macron had denounced the 'scourge' of antisemitism. Several demonstrations in support of the victim were held in Paris and in Courbevoie as hundreds took to the streets to protest. Reported antisemitic acts in France surged from 436 in 2022 to 1,676 in 2023, before dipping slightly to 1,570 last year, according to the interior ministry. Jewish groups have said that the number of such attacks rose sharply following the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which was followed by Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip and aid blockade.

Man arrested over murder of two Scots outside Spanish bar

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of two Scots in Spain. Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan died after a gunman opened fire outside Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol earlier this month. Advertisement On Friday, officers from Merseyside Police arrested a 44-year-old man on behalf of Spanish authorities on two counts of murder. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday for extradition proceedings and will remain in custody. The National Crime Agency said a man had been arrested on two counts of murder (Aaron Chown/PA) A spokesperson for the National Crime Agency said: 'On Friday June 13, officers from Merseyside Police arrested a 44-year-old man in the Liverpool area on behalf of the Spanish authorities for two counts of murder. 'The operation was supported by officers from the NCA's National Extradition Unit. Advertisement 'The individual appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday June 14 for the commencement of extradition proceedings. He was remanded in custody.' The attack took place at around 11pm when a car pulled up outside the bar and a masked man got out before opening fire as the two men stood outside. The gunman fled in the car and both men died at the scene. At the time, Police Scotland said the attack did not appear to be linked with a series of criminal acts by rival groups in Scotland, and that any speculation was 'not helpful' to the investigation. Advertisement The statement read: 'The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police. 'Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police where requested, however, at this time we have no officers deployed within Spain. 'There is currently no intelligence to suggest the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge. 'Any misinformation or speculation linking the events in Spain are not helpful to the ongoing investigations in either country. Advertisement 'There is also nothing to suggest that the shooting in Fuengirola was planned from within Scotland.' Operation Portaledge is investigating a suspected gang feud linked with a number of shootings, firebombings and assaults in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas since March. More than 40 people have been arrested in connection with the incidents.
