Faith Kipyegon will try to become first woman to break 4-minute mile in Paris

PARIS (AP) — Triple Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon will try to become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes later Thursday in Paris.
Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic 1,500-meter champion from Kenya, is already the world-record holder in the mile and 1,500. She will need to shave at least 7.65 seconds off her world record time of 4:07.64.
It was more than 71 years ago when British runner Roger Bannister became the first man to eclipse four minutes in 3:59.4.
'I want this attempt to say to women, 'You can dream and make your dreams valid,'' she said. 'This is the way to go as women, to push boundaries and dream big.'
Kipyegon set the women's mile world record nearly two years ago during a Diamond League meet in Monaco. To improve it, Kipyegon will need to run each of her four laps an average of about two seconds faster.
The 31-year-old athlete won her third straight 1,500 Olympic title in Paris last August. A month before that, she broke her own 1,500 record on the same track where she will run on Thursday at Stade Charléty.
She will be wearing the latest innovations from Nike, from her aerodynamic track suit to her spikes. It's unclear how many pacemakers will accompany Kipyegon during the Nike-sponsored event dubbed " Breaking4: Faith Kipyegon vs. the 4-Minute Mile."

PayPal partners with Big Ten, Big 12 to pay college athletes directly

In a major shift for college sports payments, online payment services company PayPal said Thursday it's partnering with two major college athletic conferences to help distribute money directly to student athletes. The multi-year agreements with the Big Ten and Big 12 Conferences will create a new system for paying college athletes through PayPal and its sister service Venmo, following a recent federal court decision that allows universities to share revenue directly with players, PayPal said in a release. The new system will launch this summer, the company said, letting universities send payments straight to athletes' PayPal or Venmo accounts. This marks a significant shift from the current system of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals, which often involve third-party collectives managing payments to players. "Venmo is ubiquitous on college campuses. There's 19 million college students, and over half have a Venmo account," PayPal CEO Alex Chriss told ABC News on Thursday. "This is the natural landing place for these revenue shares." Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark emphasized the importance of having a reliable payment system. "Starting July 1, we can pay student athletes directly from our institutions," Yormark told ABC News. "We need a reliable, very secure payment platform in which we could distribute money to our student athletes." The companies said the partnership goes beyond just payments. Venmo's release noted that it will become deeply involved in college sports, serving as the presenting partner for the first-ever Big Ten Rivalry Series and partnering with the Big 12 Conference across football, basketball and Olympic sports championships. Addressing concerns about young athletes handling large sums of money, Yormark revealed plans for financial education. "We are going to engage with a very meaningful financial literacy program with Alex and his team," he said. "Educating student athletes on their finances is critically important and will be at the core of this partnership." The system is designed to protect athletes, Chriss noted. "The money goes directly to the athlete's wallets, to their Venmo account," he said. "There's no intermediary, there's no one else getting the money first." According to the announcement, the initiative will expand beyond athletics. PayPal will become a preferred payment partner for tuition at select schools, and Venmo will enable payments for campus expenses like bookstore purchases, event tickets and concessions. The company said the full program is expected to roll out during the 2025-2026 school year.

Sharks are buying out the final year of Marc-Edouard Vlasic's contract

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks placed longtime defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic on unconditional waivers Thursday for the purpose of buying out the final year of his contract. Vlasic, 38 has been a staple in the Bay Area for the better part of the past two decades. He has played all 1,465 games of his NHL career for the Sharks since debuting in 2006. Hall of Famers Ray Bourque and Nicklas Lidstrom are the only defensemen who have played more games in the league with one team than Vlasic, counting the regular season and playoffs. Vlasic was a significant part of their core during the contending days when they reached the playoffs in 13 of 14 years and went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016. 'This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years,' general manager Mike Grier said. 'I was fortunate enough to be here with Marc for his first season with the Sharks and knew he would become a great defenseman. Over the course of his career in the NHL, Vlasic was one of the premier shutdown defensemen, earning tough defensive assignments on the ice against the best players in the world and doing it with effectiveness.' A native of Montreal, Vlasic was a key part of Canada's gold-medal run at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He missed much of last season because of injuries but skated in 27 games and had three points. Vlasic was set to count $7 million against the salary cap in 2025-26. Buying him out saves San Jose $2.3 million, while counting $1.2 million extra in '26-27. 'He brought immense expertise and experience to the organization daily, and was selected to represent his country on multiple occasions at the highest level," Grier said. "He will go down not only as one of the best defensemen in franchise history but one of the best players. We want to thank him for his dedication and commitment to the organization, and wish him all the best.' ___

Buccaneers extend coach Todd Bowles, GM Jason Licht

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Buccaneers signed general manager Jason Licht and coach Todd Bowles to multi-year contract extensions on Thursday. Bucs owner and co-chairman Joel Glazer said in the team's announcement the two have been critical to the team's recent success. "The winning culture they have established has us well positioned for the future,' Glazer said in a statement. 'The continuity and stability they provide will play a large role in our ability to compete for additional championships.' The team did not provide terms of the extensions. Bowles is coming off his third year as coach in which he led the Bucs to a fourth-straight NFC South title. He was promoted in 2022 after Bruce Arians stepped down following the Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV victory. Bowles had previously served as the team's defensive coordinator for three seasons. His 27 regular-season victories are the franchise's second-best total through three seasons behind Arians. 'I am excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we've enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals. My family loves Tampa and we're looking forward to delivering more great moments for our fans in the coming seasons,' Bowles said in a statement. 'I also appreciate the confidence that the Glazer Family has shown in my abilities to lead this football team. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly and am honored to have.' Licht is the fifth longest-tenured general manager in the league as he enters his 12th season. Along with drafting and re-signing key players in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Tristan Wirfs, Vita Vea and Antoine Winfield Jr., Licht played a significant role in the acquisition of Tom Brady. 'I am very grateful to the Glazer Family for the trust and belief they have shown in what we are doing here,' Licht said in a statement released by the team. 'I am also very excited to continue working alongside Todd well into the future as we continue our mission of finding and developing talented players and chasing additional championships for our fans.' ___
