Faith Kipyegon will try to become first woman to break 4-minute mile in Paris

PARIS (AP) — Triple Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon will try to become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes later Thursday in Paris.
Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic 1,500-meter champion from Kenya, is already the world-record holder in the mile and 1,500. She will need to shave at least 7.65 seconds off her world record time of 4:07.64.
It was more than 71 years ago when British runner Roger Bannister became the first man to eclipse four minutes in 3:59.4.
'I want this attempt to say to women, 'You can dream and make your dreams valid,'' she said. 'This is the way to go as women, to push boundaries and dream big.'
Kipyegon set the women's mile world record nearly two years ago during a Diamond League meet in Monaco. To improve it, Kipyegon will need to run each of her four laps an average of about two seconds faster.
The 31-year-old athlete won her third straight 1,500 Olympic title in Paris last August. A month before that, she broke her own 1,500 record on the same track where she will run on Thursday at Stade Charléty.
She will be wearing the latest innovations from Nike, from her aerodynamic track suit to her spikes. It's unclear how many pacemakers will accompany Kipyegon during the Nike-sponsored event dubbed " Breaking4: Faith Kipyegon vs. the 4-Minute Mile."

Sharks are buying out the final year of Marc-Edouard Vlasic's contract
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks placed longtime defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic on unconditional waivers Thursday for the purpose of buying out the final year of his contract. Vlasic, 38 has been a staple in the Bay Area for the better part of the past two decades. He has played all 1,465 games of his NHL career for the Sharks since debuting in 2006. Hall of Famers Ray Bourque and Nicklas Lidstrom are the only defensemen who have played more games in the league with one team than Vlasic, counting the regular season and playoffs. Vlasic was a significant part of their core during the contending days when they reached the playoffs in 13 of 14 years and went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016. 'This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years,' general manager Mike Grier said. 'I was fortunate enough to be here with Marc for his first season with the Sharks and knew he would become a great defenseman. Over the course of his career in the NHL, Vlasic was one of the premier shutdown defensemen, earning tough defensive assignments on the ice against the best players in the world and doing it with effectiveness.' Buccaneers extend coach Todd Bowles, GM Jason Licht
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Buccaneers signed general manager Jason Licht and coach Todd Bowles to multi-year contract extensions on Thursday. Bucs owner and co-chairman Joel Glazer said in the team's announcement the two have been critical to the team's recent success. "The winning culture they have established has us well positioned for the future,' Glazer said in a statement. 'The continuity and stability they provide will play a large role in our ability to compete for additional championships.' The team did not provide terms of the extensions. Bowles is coming off his third year as coach in which he led the Bucs to a fourth-straight NFC South title. He was promoted in 2022 after Bruce Arians stepped down following the Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV victory. Bowles had previously served as the team's defensive coordinator for three seasons. His 27 regular-season victories are the franchise's second-best total through three seasons behind Arians.
