A football club has won an award for its commitment to environmental sustainability.Northampton Town's "Cobblers Tackle Food Waste" project, led by the club's community trust, was announced as the Green Club Award winner at the 2025 EFL Awards on Sunday. The initiative aimed to improve understanding around food waste across Northamptonshire.Lorna Stockwell, from the community trust, said: "I'm speechless to be honest but it was an amazing project. It was a ground-breaking project, we went into schools and across a 12-month period the impact was huge."
Thousands of people across Northamptonshire were engaged through a mix of education sessions, gaming activities, and community outreach programmes.Challenges included turning leftovers into new meals and even transforming vegetable peelings into crisps. The project was said to have made a measurable impact, generating an 11% rise in food caddy usage locally and "significantly shifting" participants' attitudes towards waste reduction. The EFL Green Club Award is presented each year to recognise work that has made a real environmental difference, whether through matchday initiatives, staff projects or wider community schemes.
