Sir Paul McCartney pays tribute to 'shining light' Brian Wilson
Sir Paul McCartney has remembered Brian Wilson as a "shining light".
The Beatles legend has paid tribute to the Beach Boys co-founder - who he performed with on A Friend Like You, a track from Brian's 2004 solo album Gettin' In Over My Head - and his "musical genius" following his death on Wednesday (11.06.25) at the age of 82 and thanked the singer for his musical legacy.
Sharing a series of images on Instagram, Paul wrote: 'Brian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special.
"The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time. I loved him, and was privileged to be around his bright shining light for a little while.
'How we will continue without Brian Wilson, 'God Only Knows'. Thank you, Brian.'
The Hey Jude hitmaker previously declared the Beach Boys' God Only Knows to be one of his favourite songs of all time.
Inducting Brian into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000, he said: 'It made me cry and I don't quite know why. It wasn't necessarily the words or the music, it's just something so deep in it, that there's only certain pieces of music that can do this to me.
'I think it's a sign of great genius to be able to do that with a bunch of music and a bunch of notes. And this man, he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, that's for sure.'
Meanwhile, Sting performed God Only Knows in tribute to Brian during his concert on Wednesday.
Hours after the news of his death broke, Sting took to the stage at Germany's IGA Park and took a moment to honour his "hero".
Introducing God Only Knows, he said towards the end of his set: 'Today, one of my heroes died; Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. He's gone to heaven, so I'm gonna sing a song that I love."
Roger Daltrey of The Who has also paid tribute to the Surfin' USA singer.
He told the BBC: "Brian managed to write songs that took music into the realms of heaven. His harmonies and his melodies always contain so much joy. And he was such a lovely guy."

Brian Wilson "went silent" and "became detached" as he battled the long-term effects of COVID-19, according to his bandmate Al Jardine. The Beach Boys legend passed away on Wednesday (11.06.25) at the age of 82 after a long battle with health issues and his close friend Al has now opened up about the "turning point" back in 2022 when he saw the singer/songwriter begin to deteriorate. Al told Variety: "There was no trauma to speak of until that very last tour in '22. He kind of went silent and began to suffer the effects of long-term COVID, I was told, so I think that was a turning point for him. He became detached." Brian also suffered mobility issues after undergoing several operations on his back and Al thinks being unable to move around properly affected his pal's mental health. He explained: "His infirmity must have been really depressing, not being able to walk again." However, Al is convinced Brian enjoyed his final tour despite his struggles before finally stepping out of the spotlight. He added: "He was with his adoptive family, and we all loved him, and he knew it, and he savored every moment. "Until he got on stage. And then he might decide: 'Well, I'm just gonna let them do it.' Who knows what was going through his mind, but he would check out on that last tour. "And that was hard work for him; he was fragile and tired and exhausted from probably that long-term COVID thing ... So, he became, on stage, not the entertainer that everyone thought they were coming to see." Brian's family confirmed the late star's passing earlier this week by posting a message on his official Instagram page. It read: "Our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. "We are at a loss for words right now. "Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love and Mercy." The Beach Boys added in a statement: "The world mourns a genius today, and we grieve for the loss of our cousin, our friend, and our partner in a great musical adventure. "Brian Wilson wasn't just the heart of The Beach Boys—he was the soul of our sound. "The melodies he dreamed up and the emotions he poured into every note changed the course of music forever. His unparalleled talent and unique spirit created the soundtrack of so many lives around the globe, including our own. Al Jardine will have an 'empty seat' on tour after Brian Wilson's death
Beach Boys star Al Jardine is going to have an "empty seat" on his upcoming tour following Brian Wilson's death. The singer-songwriter died on Wednesday (11.06.25) aged 82 and his former bandmate Jardine has admitted the news came as a huge shock because he thought his pal was "on the mend" - admitting he had been expecting Wilson to make a guest appearance on stage at his next shows and had even ordered a piano for him. Jardine told Variety: "I saw Brian about a month ago, and he looked like he was on the mend. We were in the living room just chatting, as he was having a blood oxygen test. "He had a nurse there, and she said: 'Well, things are looking good,' so I was not too concerned ... "I thought he was going to be with us for some time. I was looking forward to him coming to the rehearsals in L.A. And I ordered a piano to be there for him." Jardine then added: "So it'll be an empty seat, I guess." The music star added of his friend's loss: "I get emotional. Unfortunately, yeah, I tend to tear up. But I'm OK." Jardine is going ahead with his tour, which is due to kick off in July, and he's planning to honour his late pal's memory onstage by playing some Beach Boys tunes - especially as he'll be working with musician Darian Sahanaja - who spent years performing in Wilson's solo band. He explained: " I think it will keep the spirit alive, and I think, yeah, it'll be more meaningful, possibly ... "I think we'll shed light on what he had accomplished, and we're looking forward to it. If we can get by. If we can get through it emotionally. I've got a feeling there's gonna be some tears up there, but we'll just have to get through it somehow."
