'I fractured my ankle six years ago now in the playoffs when I was with Boston. Over the last few years, it's starting to get worse and worse,' Krug told reporters. 'I've been able to manage it for so long now. Last year was definitely tough, trying to manage the pain level. This summer, I wasn't really able to do the things I needed to do to prepare for the NHL season, a lot of pain and stuff.'

If Krug can't return to game action, he will likely spend the last two seasons of his seven-year, $45.5 million contract with St. Louis on long-term injured reserve.
Krug was a dynamic playmaker on Boston's D corps from 2011-20, appearing in 523 games with Boston and scoring 67 goals and 270 assists.
The 34-year-old defenseman played a key role in Boston's last two runs to a Stanley Cup Final.
A poised playmaker with a booming shot, the 5-foot-9 defenseman provided a spark in his first taste of the postseason in 2013. He scored four goals and recording six points over 15 playoff games that year.
He was a menace in Boston's second-round series against Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers during that playoff push, scoring four goals over five games.
Krug was arguably Boston's most impactful defenseman during Boston's 2019 Cup run, scoring 18 points (12 on the power play) over 24 games.

Krug's 337 career points ranks fifth all-time among Bruins defensemen — trailing only Ray Bourque, Bobby Orr, Zdeno Chara, and Brad Park. The former undrafted free agent out of Michigan State is also the Bruins' all-time leading scorer among American skaters.

By KYLE HIGHTOWER AP Sports Writer Rookie Marcelo Mayer hit two of Boston's four solo home runs and the Red Sox outlasted the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Wednesday night. Abraham Toro added a go-ahead homer in the fifth inning, and Jarren Duran also hit one to help Boston earn its second series win over the Rays this season. Walker Buehler (5-4) allowed three runs off six hits over seven innings and struck out seven to earn his fifth victory since coming off the injured list on May 20. Aroldis Chapman pitched a scorelless ninth to get his 12th save. Yandy Díaz had a two-run homer for Tampa Bay. Zack Littell (6-6) lasted six innings, yielding eight hits and striking out six. It was just the third time in 19 games that a Rays starter has allowed more than three earned runs in 19 games. The Red Sox needed their bullpen to get out of a late jam. With Boston leading 4-3 with one out in the eighth, Tampa Bay loaded the bases. But Greg Wiessert struck out Matt Thaiss to end the threat. Key moment After Duran opened the game with a first-pitch homer, Mayer added his own in the second inning, hooking Littell's slider 418 feet over the wall in the right field corner. Two innings later, Marcelo hit his second of the day, this time roping a 410-foot fastball from Littell that landed in nearly the same spot as his first. Key stats At 22 years and 181 days old Mayer is the youngest Red Sox player to have a multi-homer game since Rafael Devers in 2018. At 32-36 and already nine games back of the New York Yankees for the American League East lead, the Red Sox have performed nowhere near preseason expectations, particularly with marquee additions such as ace Garrett Crochet, star third baseman Alex Bregman, Walker Buehler, and a revamped bullpen headlined by flamethrower Aroldis Chapman. Advertisement There are still 94 games left in the regular season, and Boston's 2025 story is nowhere close to its final chapter. However, that does not mean the Red Sox should feel comfortable in their ability to rebound. Advertisement While they are all exciting, young players in their own right, it would be asking a lot for them to carry the load of this tumultuous season. Speaking of turmoil, perhaps no story has dominated the Red Sox's universe more than Rafael Devers' refusal to move from third base and later reluctance to learn first base. Boston is still getting more than enough offense from its highest-paid player (.280 batting average, .925 OPS, 157 OPS+, 14 home runs, 57 RBIs for Devers), but the entire situation has left an awkward impression. Even without Devers in the field, the Red Sox have the 13th-worst Outs Above Average in baseball at -4. Plus, outside of Crochet's brilliance, none of the starting pitchers have inspired much faith.
