How to upgrade your wardrobe over 50
While many of us prioritise finding our signature style in our 20s, by the time 50 comes around, our day-to-day style can feel a little tired.
While the term 'trend' has seemingly become a non-trend due to growing awareness of the fast-fashion industry and our overstuffed wardrobes – updating your style doesn't mean overhauling your whole wardrobe.
Whether it's upgrading accessories, refreshing your colour palette or refining your silhouette – experts reveal their top tips for elevating your wardrobe over 50.
Introduce statement pieces
Changing up your style can feel like a mammoth task – but the trick is to start small.
'A wardrobe refresh doesn't have to mean a complete overhaul,' says fashion designer and podcaster Amanda Wakeley OBE. 'Start by investing in a versatile statement piece – like a beautifully tailored blazer – and then work out five different ways of styling it with your existing pieces.'
Investing in a piece you've had your eye on can help you rework your wardrobe by injecting a new lease of life. Try not to go for the same neutral knit you usually gravitate toward – and opt for a different colour or texture.
'Start by introducing texture or print – think floral appliqué tops or dresses for a subtle yet chic nod to the latest trends,' says celebrity stylist and resident expert at Klass, Lynne McKenna.

Create a mood board
If like many of us, you may frequently see clothes you like, but aren't sure how to make them work as an outfit – start by sourcing inspiration.
Create a folder of Pinterest or celebrity looks on your camera roll, then assess the common thread, whether that be shape, colour or print.
'It is generally easier if this person is similar to you in terms of colouring and shape,' says Wakeley.
'Hopefully some of the pieces they are wearing you already have something similar in your own wardrobe but perhaps they are wearing it in a more inspirational way.
'I would then suggest looking at the pieces in your wardrobe that you feel need updating the most – this may be your trousers, so try changing the leg shape.
'Always take a quick selfie of whatever you try on, and try to work out what you are liking and why?' says Wakeley, 'It is often easier to take the picture without your head so that you can be more objective about the clothes. Think about the silhouette and proportion on your body.'
Pick one new colour
It's easy to slip into a comfortable palette of creams, navies and greens – but if you want to branch out, the experts suggest incorporating one new colour.
While you may not like it, introducing a new colour forces you to look at your wardrobe with a new pair of eyes, creating combinations you may not have thought already of.
'Start small through layering colours with bold jumpers and cardigans which are sure to match neutral clothes that you may already own,' says fashion buyer at Pour Moi, Charlotte Johnson-Smith.
'Rich cobalt blue or burgundy knitwear is great for layering darker pops of colour, whilst bright yellows and greens are great for bolder brighter hues.'
If you don't want to start with clothes, 'Start with accessories and jewellery like scarves, belts, brooches and necklaces,' says fashion expert and founder of Modes and More, Susie Nelson. 'A cost-effective way to experiment is to purchase these items from charity shops, benefitting both the charity and yourself.'
If you're reassessing your wardrobe during winter, Holly Watkins, the founder of pre-loved boutique One Scoop Store, suggests missing up your base layers. 'Base layers are a great way to add colour, I love a fine-knit roll-neck in a bold colour under a shirt or chunkier knit.'

How to quickly update your look with one accessory
If you're not quite looking for a total overhaul of your current wardrobe – but are on the look out for an instant elevation – the experts suggest incorporating one trending accessory into your outfit.
Perhaps this could be a slim sneaker in favour of your old chunky trainers – or suede-effect tote in place of your usual leather cross-body.
'This season is all about embracing metallics,' says McKenna, 'and nothing updates an outfit faster than a metallic mini bag or a mix of gold and silver jewellery.
'High-shine accessories are an affordable way to make your outfits feel modern and chic, simply pair a metallic bag with a jeans-and-jumper combo, or add metal bracelets and stacking rings to a simple summer dress for a trend-led way to update your look.'
Another trending accessory, inspired by the recent equestrian craze, is a silk scarf.
'A simple silk scarf can drastically change the look of a whole outfit,' says Humes Outfitters managing director, Rachel Thomson.
'Drape it around your neck for a classic touch, tie it as a headscarf for a retro vibe or knot it to the handle of a handbag for a subtle yet stylish accent.'

Boden's glittery and 'gorgeous quality' tank top has almost £50 off
Boden's glittery and 'gorgeous quality' tank top has almost £50 off The navy and ivory coloured tank top was £85 but has now been discounted to £38.25 in the sale The top has a relaxed fit with a V-neck, which makes it perfect for layering over tees and shirts (Image: Boden ) A striped tank top from Boden, that customers says comes "with a bit of a difference", is now nearly £50 off in the retailer's sale. The Olivia Merino Tank, which comes in navy and ivory colours, was £85 but has now been discounted to £38.25 in the sale, providing a £46.75 saving for shoppers. The Olivia tank top, as is often the case with Boden's clothes, is a stylish piece of clothing and made out of good quality material. The top has a relaxed fit with a V-neck, which makes it perfect for layering over tees and shirts. It's made from soft merino yarn for a warm layer, but the top's sleeveless design could make this top an appropriate number during the warmer months of the year. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here . The tank top, in navy and ivory colour, is available in sizes XS, S, M, L and XL. Customers can also nab the top in different colours - navy, colour block for £68; multi, rainbow stripe for £46.75 and the amethysts purple, colourblock for £55.75. The top has achieved a rating of around 4.5 out of five stars based on 78 reviews. One reviewer said: "This is a really cute vest. I love the colors and the fit. It fits loose, but not too oversized. "It's great addition to my wardrobe. I will wear it with a white long sleeve tee shirt underneath." Another customer remarked: "I bought the striped tank top and went for Size S rather than my usual M after reading other reviews saying it comes up large and boxy. "It is a good fit and I would recommend going down a size. A tank top with a bit of a difference with the golden glitter details which I love. I only had it a few days and had already a few compliments." While another shopper had this to say: "Gorgeous quality, good fit, I've got fairly narrow shoulders 5'6 9st for reference and bought XS and it fits great, the shoulders drop over mine and I love that look and the flattering V neck so it works for me. "Looks lovely on its own or with a t shirt underneath and lovely soft wool and feels warm and so comfortable, hoping there's more colours coming along". But not everyone was happy with its material or style. One shopper said: "This said it was merino wool, so I was excited to order it in the sale, but when it arrived, the fabric was a much rougher, thicker wool and didn't feel as soft as expected. It was also quite boxy despite be sizing down, so unfortunately I had to return it." If you are looking for a tank top, that's a little bit more unique, there are plenty of options on ASOS, including the ASOS DESIGN knitted lobster tank top in navy for £26. Article continues below Next also has an array of choices, such as the Red White Crochet Patch Square Tank for £29.

The £30 Ozempic swimsuit that takes 10lbs off your tummy – here one woman tries it
IF the thought of wriggling back into your swimsuit fills you with dread, you're far from alone. According to new research from lingerie and swimwear brand Pour Moi, only seven per cent of women feel fully fabulous stepping out in their cossies. Just seven. The rest of us? We're artfully draped in sarongs, in tent shaped cover-ups or doing that frantic towel dance by the pool in a bid to stay incognito. Because let's be honest, hauling last summer's swimwear from the bottom drawer rarely feels good. That magical tummy control? Stretched beyond salvation. The 'statement colour'? More like a fading memory, now tinged with SPF smears and fake tan mishaps. Then comes the dreaded try-on. You catch a glimpse in the mirror and bam - any flicker of body confidence evaporates faster than your iced rosé in a midday heatwave. But here's the thing, it's not just you. We've all had the mirror moment. We've all sworn under our breath in badly lit changing rooms. And we've all wished, more than once, that swimwear came with built-in courage. But those dreams could become a reality. Whilst on the search for swimwear this year, I turned my attention to TikTok which, like it or not, is a good barometer for consumer style reviews. The first one I stumbled-scrolled upon was a brand called Cupshe. A top selling American swimwear brand that does ship to the UK and is available on Amazon. So far, so good. Primark drops brand new collection of bikinis in gingham, floral and colour block designs - and they'll set you back just £2.50 per piece Cupshe is a brand that on the surface sounds like every other swimwear brand with words like 'empower', 'inspire' and 'support'. But the brand's Slim & Sculpt swimsuit caught my eye. A viral clip racking up millions of views featuring three women, all different in shapes and sizes, slip into the same figure-loving cossie. The secret? A corset-style lace-up back that cinches in all the right places, giving each of them an envy-inducing hourglass shape. In the comments section one fan of the swimwear gushed: 'These make you feel SO confident – and that speaks volumes!' Another said: 'Just got mine and I can't believe how good it looks.' I'm immediately sold - but I need to see it in the flesh. Available for £27.99 on Amazon in six different colours, I recruited size 14, make-up artist and mum-of-one Michelle Court, 41, from Rochford, Essex, to test out this miracle swimsuit. 'Every time it comes to going on holiday I get a new cossie,' says Michelle. 'I used to be a bikini Queen and never think of pulling on a one-piece, but after a baby my confidence to show off my body has dwindled. 'These days I love a swimsuit for holding everything in. 'When I'm looking for my new holiday swimsuit I always try to hunt for one with a really good shape that flatters my figure, doesn't dig in too much and one that keeps everything in its place.' Medium is the corresponding Cupshe size for Michelle's UK dress size but out of the packet, the cossie looks rather small. We both agree it might be a struggle to get it on. But two minutes later Michelle is out of the dressing room in the red lycra number and looks like she's ready to run in slow motion down the beach. So far, so Baywatch. 5 'I look like the Special K Lady,' says Michelle. 'It's like I've been on weight loss injections! ' She was right, this swimsuit completely showcased her figure - and not a fat jab in sight. I was dubious as to whether swimwear can really be that transformative but from seeing Michelle in a thousand-wash beige costume that had zero bust support or elasticity, the change was undeniable. She said: 'It really does hold you in, like, cinches in everywhere - not like that old one from the loft.' 'Its got amazing bust support, it feels like someone has just come in behind me and lifted me - and lifted everything. 'I feel way more confident than I do in my usual costumes.' Made from 92 per cent polyester and 8 per cent Spandex the swimming costume does the nipping and tucking with its fabric, but the real magic comes from the corsetry at the back. You can tie it as loosely or as tight as you like to take inches off your waist and it really, really works. And at the back the suit also gives great bum coverage, unlike many high street swimsuits that are barely bigger than a thong at the back. Michelle said: 'Honestly, I love it. It's a 10/10 swimsuit… Can I take it home?'
