Hibs face transatlantic competition for their top transfer target, with multiple MLS clubs showing an interest in Sunderland midfielder Nectar Triantis. The Socceroos hopeful has two years left on his contract with the Premier League-bound Black Cats but, with chances to break into the first team at the Stadium of Light likely to be limited, other options are being actively explored. After two loan spells at Easter Road, Triantis remains open to the idea of a third stint in the capital. Hibs have been in negotiations with Sunderland, who would expect up to £1 million in compensation for any transfer, about both a permanent move AND the possibility of another season-long loan. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Triantis, who has just turned 22, was an absolute stand-out for Hibs last season, picking up Young Player of the Year honours at the club's annual awards and making the short list for the Scottish Football Writers' Association Player of the Year. The defensive midfielder became absolutely central to David Gray's plans as the former captain pulled off a remarkable turnaround in fortunes in his first season as manager, climbing from the relegation zone in early December to finish third in the Scottish Premiership. Triantis earned a first Australia call-up off the back of his performances , with Socceroos boss Tony Popovic publicly crediting the player's showing in February's 2-1 home win over Celtic as a factor in the former youth international's recruitment to the senior squad. An unused sub in his country's March wins over China and Indonesia, he was called up again for the make-or-break World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Saudi Arabia. Triantis has 'a lot on his mind' in potentially decisive summer But he withdrew from the squad to focus on the decisions he's facing in a crucial summer, with Popovic revealing: 'He just said he's got a lot of things on at the moment, a lot on his mind in terms of what he wants to do. We have to respect that, and we'll see what happens.' Popovic's men secured qualification for their sixth consecutive World Cup Finals appearance with this week's victory in Jedda, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Hibs stars Martin Boyle and Lewis Miller . Gray remains hopeful that the lure of playing alongside established Socceroos regulars, keeping him very much on Popovic's radar, will be the deciding factor for a player who is focused on representing his country in next summer's finals in Canada, Mexico and the USA. With fellow Hibee Jack Iredale also earning his first Australia recognition last season, they've made a strong case for Easter Road as the ideal platform for any World Cup hopeful. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Interest in Triantis has been widespread, with a number of UK clubs joining continental suitors in exploring the possibility of a loan, at least. And it is understood that at least two Major League Soccer clubs have expressed an interest in offering a starring role to the former Central Coast Mariners prospect. Hibs are also keeping an open mind over a potential Easter Road turn for Ryan Porteous. Talks with out-of-contract regulars Rocky Bushiri and Junior Hoilett, meanwhile, remain ongoing just over a week before the bulk of the first-team squad return to East Mains for pre-season training.

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler off the pace in brutal opening round at US Open

Rory McIlroy had a horrible feeling of deja vu after his US Open hopes were dented on the opening day at Oakmont, where most of the big names suffered. The Masters champion, trying to shake off the hangover of his Augusta National win in April, came to the Pittsburgh course last week on a scouting mission and carded an 81. While he fared slightly better in Thursday's first round, his four-over-par 74 leaves him needing to produce something special if he is to win the third major of the year. He is eight shots off first-round leader JJ Spaun, who tamed the brutal Oakmont course widely described as the hardest in the game, with a blemish-free 66. The American sits one shot clear of Thriston Lawrence. Sungjae Im, Brooks Koepka and Si Woo Kim are a shot further back on two-under-par. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, the overwhelming pre-tournament favourite, also struggled in posting a 73, along with defending champion Bryson DeChambeau. Scheffler said: 'I just feel like after today, I've probably got to give myself a few more looks, it could have been a little bit of a different story. 'But the golf course is just challenging.' Two-time US Open champion Brooks Koepka made a better fist of it, an eagle on the fourth hole helping him to two under, while Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth were one under. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre reckons he played one of the best rounds of his career in shooting a level par, which puts him four shots off the pace. McIlroy was simply beaten up by an unforgiving golf course which punishes you when you miss the fairway, which the Northern Irishman did plenty of times, and even sometimes when you hit the fairway. Starting on the back nine, it seemed to be going all too well for the Northern Irishman as he made the turn at two under after birdies at the 11th and 12th. But it quickly unravelled as he played holes one to nine in 41 shots, which included four bogeys and a double bogey. His playing partners Justin Rose and Shane Lowry did not fare any better as Rose went round in a seven-over 77 with the Irishman a further two shots back and both facing the prospect of missing the cut. McIlroy's struggles make Spaun's record-equalling round of 66 even more impressive. His four birdies in a blemish-free round, which is the joint-lowest first-round score in the US Open on this course, came on the 34-year-old American's first outing at Oakmont. 'All you've been hearing is how hard this place is, and it's hard to not hear the noise and see what's on social media,' he said. 'You're just kind of only hearing about how hard this course is. 'I was actually pretty nervous. But I actually tried to harness that, the nerves, the anxiety, because it kind of heightens my focus, makes me swing better, I guess.' He continued: 'I just tried to kind of take what the course gave me. I hit a lot of good shots and tried to capitalise on any birdie opportunities, which aren't very many out here. 'But I scrambled really well, too, which is a huge component to playing well at a US Open, let alone shoot a bogey-free round. 'I'm just overly pleased with how I started the tournament.'

Liverpool and Chelsea receive defiant message over £85m star Hugo Ekitike

Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike is one of the most in-demand talents in world football, with Chelsea and Liverpool both keen on a move for the 22-year-old Eintracht Frankfurt CEO Markus Krosche maintains the club don't need so sell Hugo Ekitike amid Premier League interest. Liverpool and Chelsea are both keen on the French frontman, who has been valued at around £85million. The Bundesliga side cashed in on Ekitike's former team-mate Omar Marmoush in January, with the forward joining Manchester City in a £59m deal. They still finished third, thanks in no small part to Ekitike's goals, and booked a return to the Champions League next term. ‌ 'If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us," Krosche told Wiesbadener Kurier when discussing the player. "We don't have to sell Hugo.' ‌ According to Sky Deutschland, Liverpool and Chelsea both remain in the race for Ekitike. However, it appears neither will be able to get a discount on the former Paris Saint-Germain striker. Wiesbadener Kurier reported earlier in the week that Frankfurt are keen on Mainz's Jonathan Burkardt as they look to bolster their attacking ranks. The German international could join Ekitike rather than replacing him, though, with Mainz after a fee north of £25m. Reims-born striker Ekitike burst onto the scene as a teenager with his hometown club, prompting PSG to fork out around £30m to bring him to the Parc des Princes. They took a significant loss when selling him on to Frankfurt in 2024, but the frontman's next move could come for substantially more. Ekitike initially moved to Germany on loan in January 2024, helping Dino Toppmoller's team finish sixth in the Bundesliga. A permanent switch followed, and 15 of his 22 goals this term came in the league as only Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen finished ahead of Toppmoller's side. Chelsea have been busy this month, making a number of signings ahead of their Club World Cup campaign. They weren't able to wrap up a deal for Ekitike in time, though, while fellow targets Jamie Gittens and Mike Maignan have also stayed put for now. ‌ Enzo Maresca has been able to include three new arrivals in his squad, though. Liam Delap is involved after joining from Ipswich Town, with Dario Essugo, Mike Penders and Mamadou Sarr also part of the 28-man squad, while there's also a chance for Aaron Anselmino - signed last summer - to make his competitive debut for the Blues following a loan spell at former club Boca Juniors. Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign gets underway on June 16, when they take on Los Angeles FC in Atlanta, with games against Flamengo and Esperance to follow. LAFC were last-minute additions to the competition, winning a play-off against Club America to take the place of Leon in the draw.
