Keith Lockhart celebrates 30 years as Boston Pops conductor with a big season ahead

CBS News05-05-2025

Keith Lockhart is celebrating his 30th anniversary with the Boston Pops and looking ahead to what this season will bring.
Three decades ago this week, Lockhart was first introduced as the Pops' new conductor. In the years that followed, he has become synonymous with the city, putting his own stamp on the 140-year-old institution.
"If I had one word for my 35-year-old self, I'd say relax," Lockhart told WBZ-TV.
30 years with the Boston Pops
Principal bassist Larry Wolfe thinks Lockhart was born to fill the role.
"He had some very serious shoes to fill with Arthur Fiedler and then John Williams," said Wolfe. "And he did so beautifully, gracefully. He can do anything. He walks onstage, he'll pick up the baton and begin to conduct as if he's been doing it for an hour before. It's just, it's that natural and that fluid."
The beloved conductor doesn't feel like this time with the Pops started that way.
"It's one of those things that they give you a lot of responsibility and visibility that you never had and you want very much not to fail," said Lockhart. "I remember the first five to 10 years I was here as being hard...Boston believes in its cultural institutions the same way it believes in its sports teams. That can always cut a little both ways because that also means they demand a lot out of them, but by and large, you really feel supported by the entire community when you're here."
Principal bassoonist Josh Baker is new to the Pops this season. He said Lockhart made an immediate impact on him.
"I did go sub as an undergrad student, he would come up and say hello to me," said Baker. "And I think those little acts of kindness and consideration and attention when you are young and impressionable create a warm atmosphere and it's something that you do remember."
Lockhart said of his more than 2,500 Pops performances, some do stand out like, "appearing onstage in the middle of the field at the Superdome in February of 2002 when the Patriots began the dynasty. [That] was pretty exciting."
Pops musicians know how lucky they are to have Lockhart leading the orchestra.
"I think it's one of those things that's not just ingrained in the culture here in Boston but in America, everyone knows what it is," said Baker. "And I think that's a testament to the power of what this organization has done."
"I'll remember him always for the professionalism, the honesty, the clarity," said Wolfe. "Just can't say enough about him."
Cynthia Erivo and "Jaws"
Kicking off his 30th season with the baton is a sold-out concert featuring Cynthia Erivo.
"She is just a stunning performer and has recently jumped into a real high degree of visibility, which we're thrilled by," said Lockhart. "It's going to be my first time working with her."
Also on tap this spring is "Jaws" in concert and the Fidelity Investments Young Artists Competition, where four high school students get to perform with the Pops.
"It's a great experience for them," said Lockhart. "It's a very exciting day to be in the audience too because these kids are so enthusiastic and so good."
Cody Fry will perform that same night. Lockhart said Fry, "really has fascinating approaches and ways to think about orchestral music, which is not the usual thing you say about a huge internet sensation. And I think it's the beginning of a really, really cool relationship."
What's next for Lockhart?
So what does the future hold for the maestro?
"I would say what's next for me after 30 years in this job in the short term is 31 years in this job," said Lockhart. "And obviously I won't be here forever, but in the time I am here, I'm going to try to continue to push the ball forward and try to do what I think the Pops does best, which is connect people to great music and connect people to each other."

Wake Up With Rooftop Paddleboard Yoga at The Maybourne Beverly Hills Super Swanky Pool

Wake Up With Rooftop Paddleboard Yoga at The Maybourne Beverly Hills Super Swanky Pool originally appeared on L.A. Mag. Paddleboard yoga has long been a craze in Los Angeles. But for those of us who are terrified of the pounding waves of the Pacific Ocean, or hear the theme from Jaws when venturing too far from the shore, the floating yoga studio at The Maybourne Beverly Hills is a great way to jump into the aquatic workout. This month, The Maybourne Beverly Hills began offering YOGAqua classes in the stunning pool in the picturesque pool on the hotel's ninth floor led by the technique's founder Sarah Tiefenthaler, who started her SUP [standup paddleboard] business on Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey in 2011. The class promises participants a 60-minute, Vinyasa-style session that is accessible for any level, seasoned yogis or terrified beginners (like me). "No previous yoga or SUP experience is required—just a willingness to try something new and embrace a little wobble," the hotel promises. With a class costing just $30 bucks - which includes a complimentary juice from The Maybourne Café after the practice - it's a steal for anyone who wants to learn the practice in calm, still waters without the fear of jellyfish or sharks. The partnership with YOGAqua is part of a trend that multiple luxury hotels are leaning into: inviting residents of their areas to participate in the spa or pool offerings. The Shay in Culver City has teamed up with ResortPass for a $25 dollar entry deal for its rooftop pool, one of the many boutique hotels who are swinging open its doors to Angelenos for staycations. Next Thursday, The Maybourne Beverly Hills will be the site for the pride party celebration hosted by Los Angeles that will include a slew of special guests including our June cover star Matt Bomer. This story was originally reported by L.A. Mag on Jun 6, 2025, where it first appeared.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Switch 2 update footage shows the "notorious frame drop lake" running at 60fps, and fans say it might be "the best possible advertisement" for the new console

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The Switch 2 is officially out tomorrow, and with it, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are getting a free update to improve their performance on the new console, with improved draw distance to load in even more wild Pokemon, as well as a boosted frame rate, finally bringing the adventures to 60fps. Considering how notoriously poorly Scarlet and Violet run on the original Switch – with problems like frame drops and stuttering still an issue over two years since launch – this is a massive deal, and the first gameplay footage and extended preview looks shown ahead of release have fans in a frenzy. Not only does everything look buttery smooth, but it remains that way even when embarking on Casseroya Lake. If you've spent any time at all in Scarlet and Violet's Paldea region, you'll know why this is a big deal. While far from the only location in the games to experience performance issues, it's largely considered one of the worst – stuttering and considerable frame rate drops while traveling across the water are commonplace. Or, at least, they were on the OG Switch, because Nintendo has jumped at the opportunity to show off what exploring the lake looks like now. As one stunned fan puts it, "the Casseroya Lake footage literally made me get up and stare at the screen like a 60-year-old father witnessing his football team score a goal on TV." Another adds that "showing the notorious frame drop lake at a crisp framerate was such a power play," while one fan argues that "this is the best possible advertisement they could have done for the Switch 2 oh my god." Again, it's not just a frame rate boost, as improved draw distance means a lot more wild Pokemon now populate the screen than ever before (potentially a huge boon for shiny hunters, might I add). Former Pokemon world champion Wolfe "Wolfey" Glick suspects that "if you tried to put that many Pokemon in the lake on my Switch from 2017 I think it would actually explode." All of these reactions were to the few short seconds of footage posted on the Nintendo Today app earlier this week, but since then, the owner of Pokemon news site Serebii, Joe Merrick, has shared even more from a preview event. His footage takes things to the next level, because that 60fps apparently remains consistent even in the rain, folks. "It is so beautiful," Merrick adds. It's just one day to go now before the Switch 2 is out and we can all try Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's update for ourselves – from what we've seen so far, it looks like there's never been a better time to explore Paldea. Trump Vs Musk Gets BBC ‘Have I Got News For You' Treatment After Meltdown Occurs During Recording

EXCLUSIVE: It was the bust-up that was long predicted, but spectacular nonetheless. Donald Trump and Elon Musk's steady separation suddenly went thermonuclear on Thursday, with the former MAGA mates exchanging Molotovs across two social media platforms. Deadline hears that the fireworks broke out as Hat Trick Productions was recording the final episode in the current season of BBC comedy series Have I Got News For You. Cameras were about to be shut down for the night when producers decided to throw the Trump-Musk meltdown at presenter Richard Ayoade and teams led by Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. We hear that Trump vs Musk will feature towards the end of the show, with Merton and Hislop offering their typically withering commentary on events in the U.S. Their teammates on the night were comedian Jack Dee and Kelly Cates, one of the new presenters of Premier League highlights show Match of the Day. Have I Got News For You will air at 9PM on BBC1 on Friday. The timing was somewhat auspicious given that the show is about to bow out for its 69th season. HIGNFY first launched in the UK in 1990 and continues to attract around 3M viewers, often making it BBC1's most-watched show of the day. Hat Trick Productions, run by Jimmy Mulville, has recently established Have I Got News for You on CNN in America. Filming has concluded on Season 2, and CNN has renewed the comedy show for a third run, which will begin screening in September. Hosted by Roy Wood Jr., along with team captains Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black, the show was ultimately greenlit by Mark Thompson, who is entwined in the history of Have I Got News for You, having served as the BBC's director general. Mulville would have loved for the Musk-Trump imbroglio to play out while the CNN series was in production, but for now, he will have to make do with the story gatecrashing the UK show.
