Doubles players advised not to be complacent with achievements

The Suna day ago

PUTRAJAYA: The success garnered by several national doubles players should not make them too comfortable to the point of affecting their performance.
That was among the reminders given by the national doubles coaching director, Rexy Mainaky, to his charges given that they still have many tournaments to go and they still have a lot to catch up, besides having to work harder in their efforts to pursue the bigger dream, which is the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games.
'If we talk about satisfaction, we should appreciate what the players have done with satisfaction.
'But we must remember not to let that satisfaction cause us to be complacent because there are still many tournaments and the Olympics is still far away,' he said when met after the Road To Gold meeting at Menara Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) here today.
Earlier, two men's doubles pairs, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, displayed impressive performances in several recent tournaments they participated in.
For Aaron-Wooi Yik, they managed to win three titles in three months, namely the Asian Badminton Championships in April, the Thailand Open (May) and the Singapore Open earlier this month, while Wei-Chong Kai Wun won the Malaysian Masters.
In addition, the national women's doubles pair of Pearly Tan-M Thinaah were also no less impressive when they won the Thailand Open.
Meanwhile, Rexy also expressed his gratitude to the RTG committee, especially to the Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh who started the programme early.
'I think we are the first country to prepare for LA28 by establishing the RTG programme. For me this is a positive development for the RTG athletes,' he said.

Athletics-Ingebrigtsen launches own running team with brothers and Norwegian athletes

FILE PHOTO: Paris 2024 Olympics - Athletics - Men's 5000m Final - Stade de France, Saint-Denis, France - August 10, 2024. Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway celebrates after winning gold. REUTERS/Phil Noble/File Photo (Reuters) -Two-times Olympic champion and distance runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen launched his own running team called the Spring Run Club on Wednesday, along with his brothers and two Norwegian athletes. Norwegian runner Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal, cross-country skier Marthe Kristoffersen, and Ingebrigtsen's elder brothers Filip and Henrik, also middle distance runners, are part of the team. The brothers said the club will be open to anyone interested in learning more about running, regardless of their experience or their skill level, while athletes will also share their insights, tips and training sessions. "We want to share our knowledge and help grow a global running movement, for everyone that loves running," Jakob Ingebrigtsen said in a statement. "As professional runners, we have received great support from both the federation at the top level and local clubs at the grassroots level. We want to continue collaborating with all of them. "But what has been missing is a global community fully dedicated to the craft and science of running. That's what we're building now." The team will also partner with Norwegian omega-3 producer Smartfish Sports Nutrition AS. "The Ingebrigtsen brothers and Spring Run Club are now shareholders in the company, which has committed to investing a minimum of NOK 30 million ($2.97 million)... over time in operational funding to support the development of the running team," they said in a statement. Smartfish is also set to become one of the leading partners of the new running team. Ingebrigtsen has been a key figure in a trial involving his father, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, after Norwegian police pressed charges last year accusing him of abusing two of his seven children, including Jakob. Norwegian prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Gjert, who is accused of abusing his son Jakob and daughter Ingrid, with a verdict expected this month. Rexy, Herry thank RTG for appreciating coaches' role with pay rise

PETALING JAYA: Thank you, Road to Gold (RTG). National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky and men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi expressed their gratitude to the elite athletes programme committee after they were rewarded with salary increases following the good performances of several doubles shuttlers. Mixed doubles and women's doubles coaches Nova Widianto and Rosman Razak were also given a pay rise. "I'm really happy to see the coaches get appreciated for their achievements and hard work. Thanks to RTG," said Rexy, who was redesignated from the national coaching director to managing the doubles in March. Herry, who was only appointed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February echoed Rexy's sentiments. "Of course I feel happy and I want to thank RTG for rewarding the coaches," said Herry. Herry has made a stunning impact in a short time since taking over from Tan Bin Shen, guiding world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to the Asian Championships gold in April, Thailand Open and Singapore Open titles last month. The experienced Indonesian also helped world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun win the Malaysian Masters last month. Wei Chong-Kai Wun beat Aaron-Wooi Yik in an all-Malaysian final in the home tourney. Meanwhile, under Rosman, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah won the Thailand Open, finished runners-up in the Indonesian Open and reached a career-high No. 3 in the world recently. Nova has also done well to produce two mixed pairs - Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (No. 4) and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin (No. 13) - in the world's top 20 since joining BAM at the end of 2022.

KM Sports Complex still incomplete despite deadline extension

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 Text Size: Jimson at the project site. KOTA MARUDU: District Sabah Football Association (Safa) acting president Jimson Majemal has voiced frustration over the continued delays in completing the Kota Marudu Sports Complex. He urged the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) to explain to the local community why the project remains unfinished despite being granted another deadline extension. Advertisement Jimson said the contractor was given until May 31 this year to complete the work, but the deadline has once again passed without results. As a long-time advocate of sports development in the area, he said many were hoping the complex would be ready in time to coincide with the Kaamatan celebration. KBS had previously given its assurance that the construction would be completed as soon as possible. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
