Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell reveals Aaron Rodgers conversations as QB lands in Pittsburgh

During the NFL offseason, there were rumors swirling between Aaron Rodgers and the Vikings. Minnesota ultimately did not sign the ex-Jet quarterback, moving forward with second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Now with Rodgers heading to the Steelers, Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell gave a little peek behind the conversations with the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer in the offseason. 'Aaron and I have known each other since he lived in San Diego at the time when I was playing in the NFL. We work out together in the offseasons. Built a friendship, a rapport anytime we've kept in touch throughout seasons,' O'Connell said while on KFAN1003 on Friday. 3 Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell (left) commiserates with Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers after the match during the NFL London 2024 match between Jets and Vikings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 6, 2024 in London. Getty Images 'So, there was an opportunity when him and I connected, just to kinda talk about, 'Hey, what would that look like…' We had a lot of great dialogue about it. But it always centered around what was best not only for the present Minnesota Vikings organization but the future. I was very honest about my feelings towards J.J. My obligation that I felt like we were going to give him the best possible situation to begin and thrive on this NFL journey and let's see where it goes. 'And we stayed in touch and had some communication, but I understand it's Aaron Rodgers. This is a Hall of Fame quarterback and a guy that you mention his name and it's probably going to be a popular thing, probably a good thing for anybody holding a microphone. I understand that. Out of respect for our friendship, that's about as much as really has kinda happened. I still talk to him, and the next time I talk to him it's going to be the same old same old. He's different than people probably think but I think that's all a part of it this day in age.' 3 Vikings' Kevin O'Connell reveals more about Aaron Rodgers conversations during the offseason. Darnold left for the Seahawks and a three-year, $100.5 million contract this offseason, leaving the Vikings to decide between chasing a free agent like Rodgers or going with McCarthy. The Vikings ultimately put faith in the former No. 10 overall pick in 2024, even though McCarthy missed last season due to a preseason knee injury. 3 Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) during the third quarter of their game against the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium. Comedian John Oliver to help rename Detroit Tigers' minor-league affiliate

The Detroit Tigers' Double-A affiliate is the Erie SeaWolves. At least they're called that, for now. As announced on the HBO Max's "Last Week Tonight," late-night host John Oliver has chosen the minor league SeaWolves for a major rebrand. Advertisement This effort started on a May 4 episode of the show, where Oliver analyzed the eccentricities of minor league baseball teams and offered a complete rebranding of one organization. "We are willing to use all of our resources and stupidity to give one minor league baseball team a total rebrand. We will give you a new team name. A new mascot. We will even throw you a theme night. It will be personalized and it will be bespoke," he said on the show. CURRENT TIGERS: Detroit Tigers activate catcher Jake Rogers from injured list for Tarik Skubal start According to Oliver, 47 minor league teams contacted the show pitching to be chosen, and at the end the SeaWolves were selected. Advertisement The SeaWolves have not been informed how exactly the show wants to rebrand them according to team president Greg Coleman: "We've had a lot of media inquiries, starting with the local media, and we have to tell them we would also like to know what's going on," he told Benjamin Hill. The SeaWolves have been the Tigers' double-A affiliate since 2001. Before that, they were the affiliated with the Anaheim Angels from 1999-2000 and with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1995-98 (hence the name SeaWolves and pirate theming).
