In response to changing global travel trends and a growing number of individual travellers visiting the South Korean capital, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has intensified its efforts to promote high-quality tourism experiences through a new initiative called the Seoul Quality Tour Programme.
The programme aims to develop and showcase tourism products that highlight Seoul's rich cultural heritage – including its local cuisine and popular K-content like K-pop and K-dramas – to attract international visitors.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the demand for immersive cultural experiences, including K-pop concerts and visits to K-drama filming locations, has been steadily growing. In 2023, the proportion of tourists coming to Korea for cultural experiences rose to 16 per cent, up from 12.7 per cent in 2019.

Moreover, the travel preferences of visitors in their 20s and 30s have diversified. While culinary tourism remains a major attraction, visitors also enjoy exploring shopping districts, traditional palaces and historic sites.

Seoul was also named the world's No 1 destination for solo travellers in January by Tripadvisor, the world's largest travel platform, further boosting its appeal as an attractive spot for international tourists.

HK has the capacity to welcome more tourists: Law

HK has the capacity to welcome more tourists: Law Tourism minister Rosanna Law says the visitor numbers for Friday have reached a daily record high since the pandemic. Photo: RTHK Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law said on Tuesday she believes Hong Kong has the capacity to accommodate more travellers despite some tourist hotspots being crowded during the Labour Day Golden Week. Following the end of the five-day holiday, Chief Executive John Lee requested the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, relevant departments and the sector to study the travel patterns and interests of incoming visitors. Speaking at a Legislative Council panel meeting, Law said Hong Kong saw 1.1 million tourists in the first five days of this month and that visitor numbers for Friday hit a daily record high since the pandemic. But Business and Professionals Alliance lawmaker Benson Luk asked whether the government has plans to conduct an assessment of the city's capacity to receive tourists, like what the authorities did in 2013. Law said Hong Kong saw a significant rise in the number of tourists during the past five days but pointed out that attractions in other places, such as on the mainland, were even more crowded during the holiday. "Some attractions, like the East Dam, were indeed crowded," she said. "But the order and the flow of people were smooth. "We will look into it and summarise our experiences to make sure we can handle situations better during peak seasons, such as during the Golden Week. "But I'm not worried in the short term about the overall capacity to receive tourists." Law added that the government has to look at ways to attract tourists to visit Hong Kong during different times, not just peak seasons. The Tourism Board has predicted that Hong Kong would see about 49 million visitor arrivals this year, a 10 percent increase from last year.

In the kitchen of the historic Korea House in Seoul, chef Cho Hee-sook – the 'godmother of Korean cooking' – is deftly massaging three batches of blanched spinach, and seasoning each emerald bundle with doenjang (soybean paste), ganjang (soy sauce) and gochujang (chilli bean paste), the holy trinity of Korean fermented sauces. Advertisement 'Some people just assume the Korean dining table is very meat heavy because Korean barbecue is so popular,' she says, without breaking her rhythm as she works the different sauces into the spinach. 'But, actually, much of the Korean territory is mountainous, and we get a lot of different vegetables.' The season of spring greens, known as bom-namul, is highly anticipated in Korea; it is a time where a glorious bounty of herbaceous, sweet, nutty and bitter plants with complex flavours, aromas and textures arrives from the mountains and fields across the country. We joined chef Joseph Lidgerwood of two-Michelin-star Evett for a tour through Gyeongdong Market in the South Korean capital's Dongdaemun district, a warren of stalls overflowing with medicinal herbs and roots, fresh vegetables and dried seafood. 650 influencers were invited to HK in first quarter

650 influencers were invited to HK in first quarter Influencer IShowSpeed caused a few disruptions during his sojourn through Hong Kong in early April. File photo: Reuters The Hong Kong Tourism Board has invited more than 650 influencers to the SAR in the first quarter of this year, cultural and tourism chief Rosanna Law said on Wednesday. That came after YouTube streamer IShowSpeed drew massive crowds of fans and caused disruptions as he toured around the city early this month. In a written reply to a lawmaker, Law said police will closely monitor the situation and deploy manpower to handle potential emergencies in any future similar events. For Hong Kong's "Super March", the board collaborated with nearly 100 celebrities from around the world, she added. Notable figures included world snooker number one Judd Trump and South Korean actor Wi Ha-joon, who starred in Netflix's hit series Squid Game 2. Law said the board evaluates potential partnerships with influencers based on the size of their fan base, social media engagement rates, professional status and image. Looking ahead, the board will invite more globally renowned stars to the city, she added.
