Veterans honor fallen brothers at Vietnam Veterans War Memorial

Yahoo6 days ago

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — On this Memorial Day, veterans, family members and onlookers honored those killed during the Vietnam War.
'We always set this day aside just to remember everyone on that wall,' said Tom Foor, who visited the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial Monday. 'They paid the price, and we paid it too. We think about them often.'
Foor served in the Army First Cavalry Division in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969.
'Those guys died serving our country. They need to be remembered always,' he said. 'That black granite wall will preserve that, and people can go down through that aisle, and they can look, and they can see how much of a tremendous burden it put on the country and it put on us.'

More than 58,000 names are etched into the memorial honoring those killed during the war.
'You look at the names and you see your reflection. You grow older, they don't,' said Bob McLaughlin, who served in Vietnam in 1969. 'We've had marriages, children, grandchildren, births, new experiences. They don't.'
Harry Metzler, who presented a regimental wreath at the memorial Monday, said it's so important to remember those who sacrificed everything.
'It matters because these people gave their all. I fought with them side by side. They were my brothers, you honor your brothers that actually saved the nation, saved our freedom,' he said. 'Just don't forget and don't repeat.'

Atlantic hurricane season begins

The Atlantic Basin hurricane season began June 1. The Atlantic Basin includes the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf and the Caribbean. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its forecast for the upcoming season, which runs through November 30. They are predicting 13 to 19 named storms, six to 10 of which may become hurricanes. Forecasters are predicting a 60 percent chance of an above-average season. The development zones for tropical development are typically the Gulf, down into the Caribbean between the Yucatan and Cuba, and the Eastern seaboard. Here's a look at the names for the 2025 Atlantic Basin hurricane season: The prediction of an above-average season has to do with ENSO-neutral conditions expected, along with an enhancement in the West African monsoon. They're also expecting above-average sea-surface temperatures and weaker wind shear in the development zones. This helps aid in tropical cyclone development. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. TRAFFIC ALERT: Route 90 bridge construction to cause detour in McDonald County

MCDONALD CO., Mo. — One McDonald County road is closing as part of a bridge construction project. Starting Monday, Slinkard Road just off of Missouri Route 90, east of Jane will close to traffic so contractor crews can install pipe and base rock. MoDOT expects the road to be closed from Monday June 2 to Wednesday June 4. While work is being done, drivers will be directed along a signed detour of McDonald County Route K, Business 71, County Route H and I-49. Signs and message boards will also alert drivers approaching the work zone. The work is part of a 2.3 million dollar project to replace the current one-lane bridge over Little Sugar Creek on Route 90, with a new two-lane bridge, guardrails, barrier walls and permanent striping. The project is estimated to be complete early December this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
