Why Sunderland's Championship play-off final is kicking off at 3.01pm

ITV News23-05-2025

Sunderland's Championship play-off final at Wembley this weekend will kick-off at 3.01pm, rather than the usual 3pm, to highlight the fact that 'Every Minute Matters'.
This campaign aims to inspire supporters to learn CPR, equipping them with vital skills that could save someone's life.
Meanwhile, this weekend's other play-offs in League One and League Two will also kick off a minute late.
The campaign is being supported by the Red Sky Foundation, a heart health charity who have provided seven defibrillators around the Stadium of Light.
The Sunderland based organisation has also provided defibrillators at Bramall Lane, the home of The Black Cats' opponents in the play-off final, Sheffield United.
Sergio Petrucci, CEO of the Red Sky Foundation, said: "This will raise awareness of CPR across the country, not just to football fans, but to the general public as well. The reason why we're doing that is because every minute does count.
"When it comes to CPR and somebody's having a medical emergency, the most important thing to do is to call 999, and begin hands-on CPR, start the compressions, and have that blood circulating around the body, most importantly to the brain."
EFL Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Birch said: "The Sky Bet Play-Offs are a special moment in the football calendar and tens of thousands of supporters will be at Wembley Stadium across the weekend with millions more tuning in from home.
"By kicking off all three Play-Off Finals one minute later, Every Minute Matters continues to harness the power and visibility of football to encourage even more people to learn CPR, which could ultimately help to save even more lives."

Rangers and Celtic handed transfer truth bomb as EPL clubs 'most likely' destination for 12-goal target

Celtic and Rangers have been told they face an uphill battle to convince one of their reported targets to move to the Scottish Premiership after interest from the English Premier League (EPL) emerged over the weekend. The Glasgow giants have both been linked with an interest in Peterborough United's out of contract attacker Kwame Poku, with Rangers said to have been keen on the star as far back as November, after club scouts watched the 23-year-old score a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Cambridge United. Celtic are also said to be one of several clubs to have made contact with the player's representatives last month. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Ghanaian international scored 12 goals and assisted a further eight as the Posh survived relegation from EFL League One, but the club have confirmed he will depart this summer with his contract expiring at the end of the month, alongside highly-rated teammates Hector Kyprianou and Ricky-Jade Jones. However, both Celtic and Rangers could take advantage of cross-border transfer rules, with the player likely to be able to sign for a 'minimal' compensation fee, as opposed to the much higher development fee English clubs would be forced to pay. Newly promoted EFL Championship sides Birmingham City and Wrexham have also been credited with an interest in the talented attacker, while Sheffield United are also said to be monitoring developments. However, it now appears that EPL outfit Sunderland may have moved to the head of the queue, after interest from the Black Cats emerged over the weekend. Speaking to Football League World, former Aston Villa and England midfielder Lee Hendrie believes Sunderland could win the race for his signature, with interested parties likely to be "up against it" in order to sign the youngster if Regis Le Bris' side table an official offer. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "I think Poku is a really, really good player," said Hendrie. 'He's a young player who has got bags of ability, but obviously there are a lot of clubs that are sniffing around him, like Sunderland and Sheffield United. Birmingham are a team like Wrexham, who are newly promoted. I think they've got to bring in the right personnel who know the league and have potential to go again. Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris | Chris Fryatt 'If Sunderland come in with an offer, you would think that being in the Premier League is the ultimate aim for these guys. As a player, you want to play at the top level and test yourself, and I'm sure Poku is the same because he's got the ability to go and play at the top of the Championship, maybe even the Premier League.'

Next Rangers manager: Why intellectual Russell Martin would be 'positive thing' for Ibrox club

Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn has endorsed former teammate Russell Martin as a good fit for Rangers after it emerged that the 39-year-old is close to being appointed as the Ibrox club's new head coach. Reports emerged on Tuesday lunchtime that Rangers are poised to appoint Martin as their next manager. The ex-Scotland internationalist - who had a brief spell on loan in Govan - has always been one of chief candidates since Philippe Clement was sacked back in February and with the search nearing its conclusion following last week's takeover and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell taking office on Monday, it appears an appointment is imminent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Thelwell and new chairman Andrew Cavenagh have been tasked with landing their next boss and Martin, who has been out of the dugout since being sacked by Southampton last December, is understood to have been in competition with former Real Madrid assistant boss Davide Ancelotti for the role. Russell Martin has emerged as the leading candidate for Rangers' managerial vacancy. | Getty Images Should the appointment come to fruition, one of his former teammates in Gunn believes "intellectual" Martin has the tools to succeed at Rangers. The pair played together at Norwich in 2017 and the centre-half's leadership skills stood out for the goalkeeper. 'There were a few other players in that dressing room – Steven Naismith was there as well – and you can tell on the pitch when you're playing with players,' said Gunn. 'They kind of start coaching whilst they're still playing, if you like, sort of organising on the pitch. 'Russell was one of them, but it wasn't just on the pitch, it was off the pitch as well, where he had close relationships with everyone. Even though he wasn't a regular playing in the team, he was always on hand and always upbeat and a good person to go to. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'He helped me massively' 'Obviously, I only worked with him as a player at Norwich but he's a very intellectual guy. I went in there as a young goalkeeper and he helped me massively, even though he wasn't in the team every week and playing regularly. He was the captain of the club and he had good relationships with everyone in the dressing room. 'Obviously, watching what he's done at Southampton, I thought he'd done incredibly well there and probably was unfortunate to lose his job there because it's always difficult for teams coming up from the Championship to even compete with some of the Premier League teams,' said the goalkeeper. 'With the way he wants to play and his philosophy, I really hope whatever he goes on to do in his career is successful. Obviously he had a spell at Rangers, so he kind of knows the club a little bit. I think it would be a really good thing for Rangers. Angus Gunn played briefly with Russell Martin at Norwich City. | Getty Images "As a manager, he showed what he can do, not only with Southampton but with Swansea as well. He took a team that wasn't expected to do much quite far into the Championship as well. I think it will be a positive thing for Rangers. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Gunn played against Martin's Southampton team two years ago en route to the Saints' promotion from the Championship and he recalled: "They were a tough team. I think we had a couple of good games against them. One was 4-3, one was 0-0, so quite contrasting. "We've seen the evolution of their team throughout the season. I think when we first played them, they were quite open. Then, when we played them again, they were a little bit pragmatic.

Rangers reach agreement for next manager appointment as timeline and backroom staff revealed

Russell Martin has agreed a deal in principle to become the next head coach of Rangers with an appointment expected before the weekend. The Scotsman understands that, barring any last minute hitches, the former Scotland international will become Philippe Clement's successor following more positive talks over the last 24 hours. It will mark a return to Ibrox for the 39-year-old ex-defender, who spent six months on loan at Rangers from Norwich City in the second half of the 2017-18 season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Martin has been one of the leading candidates throughout the recruitment process, which has accelerated this week following the completion of a takeover of the club by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises. The search for a head coach has been spearheaded by newly-installed sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Greitar Steinsson, technical director for 49ers Enterprises. Russell Martin is set to be appointed the next manager of Rangers. (Photo by Andrew Matthews/PA Wire) Davide Ancelotti had also been in the frame but talks between the new Rangers regime and the son of Carlo Ancelotti, who was his father's assistant at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton, appear to have broken down in recent days. Martin has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in December. He led Saints to promotion via the Championship play-offs last May but managed only one victory and 13 defeats in 16 Premier League matches. He has also previously managed Swansea City and MK Dons, where he became renowned for a possession-based brand of football. Martin will sign a three-year deal until June 2028 with long term assistant boss Matty Gill joining him at Ibrox, while former Rangers full-back Maurice Ross is also reportedly lined up for a coaching role. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Many Rangers fans have expressed dismay over Martin's imminent arrival but he has been backed to be a success at Ibrox by his former Norwich manager, Chris Hughton. Russell Martin, right, played under Chris Hughton at Norwich City. (Photo by) | Getty Images Speaking on talkSPORT, Hughton said: 'If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known of course, for playing a certain way, very expansive in the way that he wants to play, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds. 'But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far. 'I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect that he can. I saw him recently, and he was in good form and really looking forward to getting back into the game. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I think he's had a few offers. So this is somebody that's still very respected in the game, and of course, the rollercoaster in management, there are always going to be ups and downs, but he's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch. 'He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings that we had and, of course, he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players. 'So no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics. And he was somebody that, as he improved in his career as a player, is of course very much looking to improve the same way in management.'
