Plaque for Spitfire crash pilot unveiled
A plaque honouring an RAF pilot who died in a Spitfire crash has been unveiled.
Sqn Ldr Mark Long was killed when his plane, which belonged to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), crashed in a field near RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on 25 May 2024.
The commemorative plaque was installed in the village of Market Stainton, near Market Rasen, and unveiled during a dedication ceremony at 13:00 BST.
On the day of his death, Sqn Ldr Long, 43, had been due to fly over the village as part of a remembrance ceremony for the crew of a Lancaster bomber, which crashed nearby in 1943, organisers said.
The plaque for Sqn Ldr Long was organised by Dan Grant, who was also involved in the memorial event for the Lancaster crew.
His cousin, Flying Officer Francis Archie Randall, was the pilot of the bomber when it came down in the village on its return from a raid on Berlin on 16 December 1943.
Mr Grant, a retired airline captain and aviation historian who lives in Quebec, Canada, raised money for a memorial dedicated to Flying Officer Randall – who was just 21 when he died – and the rest of the crew.
He said Sqn Ldr Long had been on his way to perform a fly-past at a dedication ceremony for the memorial when his Spitfire crashed.
Mr Grant said he decided to pay tribute to Sqn Ldr Long with a new plaque in his honour, which had been sponsored by the RAF.
He paid tribute to Sqn Ldr Long as a man who "dedicated himself to preserving the history of the RAF, as well as defending the freedoms we now enjoy", adding that he could not be "more proud" of him.
The BBMF fleet was grounded after the crash, but has since been cleared for flying and is due to take part in events during this year's display season.

Stalker put AirTag in victim's car to track her
A man who stalked a woman and put a tracking device on her car to follow her movements has been jailed. Northampton Crown Court heard Wayne Stead, 48, of Stimpson Avenue in the town, started harassing her, making threats and turning up unannounced at her home after their relationship broke down in 2023. He was jailed for two and a half years and handed an indefinite restraining order after pleading guilty to stalking involving serious alarm or distress. PC Rich Horsburgh from Northamptonshire Police said: "The ordeal that Wayne Stead subjected this woman to was nothing short of horrific." "Her bravery in coming forward, despite her very real fear that he would make good on his threats to harm her, is remarkable," he added. The court heard Stead started calling and messaging the woman at all hours of the day and night after their relationship broke down. He placed an Apple AirTag, which are designed to help people find missing items, in her car. Concerns have previously been raised about the devices being used by stalkers. The woman reported Stead to the police in August 2024, telling them she had moved into a hotel and was in fear of her life. He denied the offences but, before his trial took place, he changed his plea to guilty and was charged with 30 months' imprisonment on 28 April at Northampton Crown Court. He was also given an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the woman or going near her home. A charge of burglary against him was dropped after prosecutors offered no evidence. Suspected arson on tents used by homeless people
Police have launched an arson investigation after tents used by homeless people were set alight, including one with a man inside it. Fire crews were called to Grantham's South Lodge Park – known locally as The Paddocks – at about 01:50 BST. The occupant – a man in his 40s – suffered no serious injuries, Lincolnshire Police said. The force said it was treating the incident as arson with intent to endanger life. One tent was destroyed in the blaze while another two were badly damaged. "The area is sheltered by trees, and we know that the time of morning [when] this happened will mean [the number of] witnesses is limited," a police spokesperson said. The force is asking people to check CCTV, doorbell cameras and dashcam footage on surrounding roads and paths to see if it captured anyone in the area at the time. GLASTONBURY Festival's exclusive broadcast partner, the BBC, has planned a two-month celebration of the festival, and here's where you can watch and hear the action. Across TV, BBC iPlayer, radio, and BBC Sounds in June and July, audiences can expect a jam-packed schedule that shares Somerset's Glastonbury magic with the rest of the UK. Rod Stewart's episode is available on BBC iPlayer now, with two more episodes dropping on Mondays (5am) until 16th June. BBC Radio 6 Music BBC Radio 6 Music – the radio home of Glastonbury and the UK's biggest digital-only radio station with an audience of 2.6 million listeners (RAJAR, Q1 2025) – hosts All Day Glastonbury from Wednesday 25th June – Monday 30th June. For six days, the schedule will be dedicated entirely to Glastonbury, with all tracks being from artists who have played or will play the festival this year, highlights from Glastonbury sets past and present, and more live shows from site than ever before. The station will be broadcasting 58 hours of live programming from Glastonbury and joining forces with BBC Sounds' Sidetracked, broadcasting two Glastonbury specials of the podcast on the Friday and Sunday, 6-7pm. On Wednesday 25th June, Nick Grimshaw (7-10am) will broadcast his show live from Worthy Farm as the gates open and festival-goers pour in. BBC Radio 1, Radio 1 Dance and 1Xtra Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders begins the station's live coverage from Worthy Farm on Thursday 26th June (6-8pm). This is followed by Radio 1 Dance's Takeover of the BBC Introducing Stage with Danny Howard, Arielle Free, Sarah Story and special guests, which will be simulcast on Radio 1 and Radio 1 Dance (8-11pm).
