Cabinet clears two railway projects worth Rs 6,405 crore in Jharkhand, Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh
In a boost to
railway infrastructure
and
regional connectivity
, the PM Modi-led Cabinet on Wednesday approved two
multitracking projects
— the Koderma–Barkakana doubling in Jharkhand and the Ballari–Chikjajur doubling in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the work will be completed within the next three years.
Together, the plan will expand the Indian Railways network by 318 km, at a total estimated cost of Rs 6,405 crore.
Both lines are critical for passenger and freight movement and will significantly reduce carbon emissions while enhancing operational efficiency. "Both projects are crucial for improving connectivity and boosting the economy, benefiting both tribal communities and the general population," said the union minister during a press conference.

Koderma–Barkakana line
The Koderma–Barkakana (Arigada) doubling project, spanning 133 km, has been approved at a cost of Rs 3,063 crore. This line forms the shortest rail connection between Patna and Ranchi and is vital for intercity travel and logistics, according to a government presentation by Vaishnaw.
The route passes through four districts in Jharkhand — Koderma, Chatra, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh — and will directly benefit 938 villages and a population of around 15 lakh. The scheme includes construction of 17 major bridges, 180 minor bridges, 42 Road Over Bridges (ROBs), and 13 Road Under Bridges (RUBs), reflecting significant infrastructure enhancement.

Once operational, it is expected to handle an additional 30.4 million tonnes of cargo annually.
It is also expected to save 163 crore kilograms of CO₂ emissions and 32 crore litres of diesel per year — an environmental benefit equivalent to planting seven crore trees, said Vaishnaw.
Ballari–Chikjajur doubling
Meanwhile, the second project, the Ballari–Chikjajur doubling, covers a 185 km stretch and has been cleared at an estimated cost of Rs 3,342 crore. This line connects Mangalore Port to Secunderabad and is critical for moving key commodities such as iron ore, coking coal, steel, fertilizers, petroleum products and foodgrains.
The venture will enhance connectivity for Ballari and Chitradurga districts in Karnataka and Ananthpur district in Andhra Pradesh. With 19 stations, 29 major bridges, 230 minor bridges, 21 ROBs and 85 RUBs, the line will offer modernised infrastructure to support freight movement.
The Ballari-Chikjajur doubling is likely to benefit around 13 lakh people across 470 villages and facilitate an additional 18.9 million tonnes of cargo annually.
Like its Jharkhand counterpart, according to the union minister, this line promises significant environmental gains — reducing carbon emissions by 101 crore kilograms and saving 20 crore litres of diesel annually, equivalent to planting four crore trees.

There have been two lakh cyber attacks on the power sector in India during 'Operation Sindoor'. In the first such confirmation of massive cyber attacks during India-Pakistan clashes, the government today said all the attacks were foiled and the power system is working perfectly. "Two lakh cyber attacks on the power system have taken place. All these attacks have been thwarted," said Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. He was addressing a press conference on the completion of 11 years of the BJP-led Central government. To a question by NDTV, the minister said that cyber attacks started after India launched 'Operation Sindoor' - in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack - and continued for 8 to 10 days. In Jammu and Kashmir, most of the official sites, including power, were targeted, and some are still struggling to be restored. The cyber attacks have affected public services and the official functioning of various departments. On May 7, India woke up to the news of "focused, measured and non-escalatory" strikes of the Armed Forces on the terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Nine terror launchpads were targeted within 25 minutes in the operation. The mission was named 'Operation Sindoor' - a codename to avenge the widows of the April 22 attack, wherein 26 civilians - all men - were killed in cold blood by terrorists linked to an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba. The precision terror strikes on terror launch pads were met with Pakistani aggression. The Pakistani military tried to target several cities in India using drones and other munitions, which were "repulsed" by the Indian forces. After four days of fighting, India and Pakistan reached an agreement to stop firing on May 10. Within hours, however, the deal was breached by Pakistan. It was responded to with a stern warning by the Armed Forces the next day: "India would retaliate fiercely to any violation in future".

Dixon partners with Signify to form joint venture for lighting OEM business
Dixon Technologies (India) Limited and Signify Innovations India Limited have entered into a joint venture agreement to establish a new company in India dedicated to original equipment manufacturing (OEM) of lighting products and accessories. 'The Proposed Transaction is expected to be completed by 30 November 2025, subject to completion of conditions precedents,' Dixon stated in a regulatory filing. The joint venture will be structured as a 50:50 partnership, with each company holding equal ownership but contributing in different forms. Dixon to transfer lighting business, Signify to inject capital As part of the agreement, Dixon will acquire its 50 per cent stake in the new entity by transferring its existing lighting business, including full ownership of its wholly owned subsidiary Dixon Technologies Solutions Private Limited (DTSPL), to the joint venture. This transfer will occur on a non-cash basis. Signify, meanwhile, will acquire its 50 per cent stake by injecting capital into the new company. This cash infusion will enable the JV to acquire Signify's LED manufacturing business. The valuation of both businesses being transferred will be mutually determined in accordance with applicable regulations. Valuation reports will be obtained to ensure the transaction adheres to arm's length standards. Independent JV to be based in India The new company will be a domestic entity, established and headquartered in India. 'Neither the Company (Dixon) nor Signify will have any stake in each other,' the company clarified. Equal board representation from both parties will be maintained until the transaction's completion. This follows the signing of a binding term sheet between the two companies on 27 March 2025. Strategic expansion into lighting OEM segment The partnership aligns with Dixon Technologies' broader strategy to expand its footprint in India's lighting ecosystem. The JV will merge Dixon's manufacturing scale and operational know-how with Signify's strengths in lighting technology and product innovation.

India's first international fishery tech expo opens in Mumbai, over 6,000 visitors on day 1
India's first-ever International Fishery Tech Expo (IFT Expo 2025) was inaugurated in Mumbai on Thursday in a significant move towards upgrading the fisheries industry. On the first day, over 6,000 trade visitors visited the stalls of over 55 exhibitors from all over India and abroad that showcased recent advancements in fisheries technology. Maharashtra Ports Development Minister Nitesh Narayan Rane launched the three-day event. Dignitaries, including Kishor Tawade, Maharashtra's Commissioner of Fisheries, and officials from Gujarat, Karnataka, and Goa's fisheries departments were present on the occasion.
