Pakistan PM to discuss economic, regional issues with UAE president during Abu Dhabi visit

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will meet United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during an official visit to the Gulf state tomorrow, with discussions expected to focus on economic cooperation and recent regional developments, the Pakistani foreign office said on Wednesday. Sharif's trip comes amid Pakistan's deepening ties with Gulf nations, including the UAE, as it strives to revive its economy through export-led growth and foreign investment. The UAE is Islamabad's third-largest trading partner and a major investor. It is also home to over a million Pakistani expatriates and has been a critical ally during Islamabad's recent financial crisis, depositing funds in Pakistan's central bank to help unlock International Monetary Fund (IMF) assistance. 'Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will undertake an official visit to the United Arab Emirates on 12 June 2025,' the foreign office said in a statement. 'Prime Minister Sharif will hold high-level meetings with the UAE leadership, including a bilateral meeting with the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan,' it added. 'A wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest and concern will be discussed during the high-level interactions.' The foreign office said the visit reflected the 'deep-rooted fraternal ties' between the two countries, marked by 'mutual trust, shared values and close cooperation across multiple sectors.' In January 2024, Pakistan and the UAE signed agreements exceeding $3 billion for cooperation in railways, economic zones and infrastructure. Last month, Sharif held a phone call with the UAE president in which he expressed satisfaction over growing ties and pledged to transform the relationship into a 'mutually beneficial economic partnership.' During the call, the two leaders also discussed tensions between Pakistan and India that recently escalated into cross-border hostilities involving missile strikes, drones and artillery fire. Sharif thanked the UAE for its 'constructive diplomatic role' in defusing the crisis and said the Gulf nation had 'always stood by Pakistan, through thick and thin.' The UAE is also a strategically favorable destination for Pakistan due to its proximity, minimizing freight costs. The prime minister's visit is expected to reinforce ongoing economic cooperation and explore new areas of strategic partnership.

Abu Dhabi expects more rapid growth for its financial center

LONDON: The rush of financial firms setting up in Abu Dhabi to tap the emirate's wealth funds and Middle East markets will continue at pace, the official in charge of expanding its financial hub has predicted. Abu Dhabi, which holds 90 percent of the UAE's oil reserves, has accelerated efforts to diversify its economy, leaning on its vast sovereign funds that together manage almost $2 trillion of capital. Abu Dhabi Global Markets still lags Dubai, but the number of firms registered in the center rose by 32 percent last year, and the amount of assets managed by firms there grew 245 percent, as the likes of BlackRock, Morgan Stanley, AXA, PGIM and hedge fund Marshall Wace all set up or registered funds there. Earlier on Tuesday, Harrison Street, a US firm focused on alternative real estate assets with about $56 billion in assets under management, said it was opening an office in Abu Dhabi. The center reported last week that new operating licenses increased 67 percent in the first quarter of this year, taking the total number of firms there past 2,380. 'We still have very strong growth,' ADGM's Chief Market Development Officer, Arvind Ramamurthy said, noting that the pipeline of new firms looked strong for the rest of the year, but refrained from giving a forecast for asset growth. 'Will it be 245 percent again this year? I wish. Let's see,' he said in an interview late on Monday. Firms from Japan, India, and China are also setting up in growing numbers, including asset managers and financial institutions, as well as crypto and artificial intelligence firms, Ramamurthy said, providing no further details. With cryptocurrency regulations in place since 2018, Abu Dhabi has become a major center for such investment, with sector heavyweights such as Circle and Coinbase represented there, while Abu Dhabi-backed investment group MGX has recently invested $2 billion worth of crypto tokens — issued by US President Donald Trump's World Liberty Financial venture — in the world's biggest crypto exchange, Binance.

Zara Owner Inditex Reports Weaker Than Expected First-quarter Sales

Zara owner Inditex missed expectations for its first-quarter sales on Wednesday, adding to doubts about the ability of the fast-fashion retailer to keep delivering strong sales growth in an uncertain economic environment. Inditex also reported a slower start to its summer sales, with revenue growth of 6% from May 1 to June 9, compared to a 12% growth in the same period a year ago, Reuters said. The company reported revenues of 8.27 billion euros ($9.44 billion) for its first quarter ending April 30, missing analysts' average estimate of 8.36 billion euros, according to an LSEG poll. Fears of resurgent inflation and an economic slowdown triggered by tariffs have already dampened consumers' enthusiasm for shopping in the United States and elsewhere. Cooler weather in Spain, which accounts for 15% of Inditex's global sales, has also probably hurt the retailer's performance, according to Bernstein analysts.
