RailTel, IRFC to Rites: Not just defence — railway stocks are on a roll too, surge up to 30% in May

Mint19-05-2025

Railway stocks in focus: Defence stocks have become a hot segment for Dalal Street investors ever since tensions between India and Pakistan escalated, bringing these domestic-focused companies back into the spotlight and triggering strong rallies similar to those seen during the first half of 2024.
Railway stocks also joined the rally, with most stocks in the segment gaining sharply. Shares of Rail Vikas Nigam, RITES, BEML, Ircon International, RailTel Corporation of India, IRCTC, and Indian Railway Finance Corporation delivered returns of up to 30% in May, as investors responded positively to steady order wins and healthy performance in the March quarter.
Railway stocks had previously experienced a sustained bull run from May 2023 to July 2024, which drove their valuations to unsustainable levels. This, combined with a slowdown in order inflows, led investors to retreat from the segment, resulting in sharp corrections from record highs.
However, the recent pickup in order flow has renewed investor interest, attracting them back into the railway segment alongside the continuing momentum in defence stocks.
Shares of RailTel Corporation of India jumped from ₹ 312 to ₹ 384 in May, marking a 30% gain so far — the stock's biggest monthly rise since January 2024. The infrastructure company received a work order worth ₹ 227.5 million from North Central Railway in early May.
For the March quarter, the company reported a net profit of ₹ 113.4 crore, up from ₹ 77.53 crore a year ago, reflecting strong operational execution and improving business momentum. RailTel delivered FY25 profit growth of 27.6%, in line with its guidance of 25–30%.
The Navratna company has reiterated its revenue and profit growth guidance of 25–30% for FY26, supported by robust order inflows worth ₹ 31.5 billion in FY25.
RITES, a leading transport infrastructure consultancy and engineering firm, has also seen its share price surge 27% in May. The company secured over 150 orders (including extensions) worth more than ₹ 1,418 crore in Q4FY25, taking its order book to a record high of ₹ 8,877 crore as of March 31, 2025. In Q4, its net profit rose 6.2% YoY to ₹ 141 crore.
Ircon International shares have rallied 23% so far in May, driven by consistent order wins. On May 6, the company received an order worth ₹ 1.87 billion from Kerala State IT Infrastructure. Earlier, it secured a ₹ 458.14 crore contract from North Eastern Electric Power Corporation for civil works in the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh.

In late April, Northeast Frontier Railway increased Ircon's awarded contract size by ₹ 59.44 crore.
Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) shares have delivered a 17% return in May, fueled by steady order wins from Indian Railways. On Friday, the company bagged an order worth ₹ 116 crore from Central Railway. In mid-April, it had emerged as the lowest bidder for a ₹ 143 crore contract from Southern Railway.
Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) has also seen its share price soar 12% in May amid multiple positive developments. On May 15, it received government approval to raise up to ₹ 100 billion via deep-discount bonds — a corporate debt instrument gaining popularity among state-owned firms.
In late April, IRFC emerged as the lowest bidder to extend a ₹ 50 billion loan to NTPC. For the March quarter, it reported a net profit of ₹ 1,682 crore, compared to ₹ 6,723 crore in the year-ago period.
Other railway-related PSU stocks, such as BEML and IRCTC, also gained 16% and 8%, respectively, in May.

Suzlon vs Inox Wind: Which wind energy stock should you buy after March quarter results?

Suzlon Energy and Inox Wind, leading players in wind energy solutions, have garnered significant interest from Dalal Street investors in recent years, amid India's strong push to expand renewable energy capacity by the end of this decade. Both companies are engaged in the manufacturing of Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) and providing comprehensive wind energy services. Following their March quarter results, these companies have once again caught investor attention in recent sessions. Analysts have largely retained their optimistic outlook on both companies and have raised target prices after the Q4 results met expectations. They believe the two players are in a strong position amid the growth potential of India's wind energy market, which is expected to rise to 100 GW by 2030 from the current 50 GW. Although Inox Wind shares reacted negatively in today's session to the March quarter numbers, analysts have retained their positive outlook on the stock, citing strong execution of wind projects in FY26 and FY27, which they believe could result in a significant jump in revenue and net profit. Domestic brokerage firm Nuvama Institutional Equities reiterated its 'Buy' call and raised the price target to ₹ 236 from ₹ 223, citing Inox Wind's strong position as one of only two wind EPC suppliers in India, benefiting from demand in RTC, FDRE, and C&I segments. ICICI Securities also reiterated its 'Buy' rating and slightly raised its price target to ₹ 230 from ₹ 228, valuing the company at 30x FY27 estimated earnings. Systematix Institutional Equities maintained a 'Buy' rating on Inox Wind stock, with a price target of ₹ 231. For Suzlon Energy stock, Morgan Stanley maintained its 'Overweight' rating with a target price of ₹ 77 apiece, while Motilal Oswal has also retained its 'Buy' rating, with a ₹ 83 apiece target price. For the quarter ended March, Suzlon Energy reported a net profit of ₹ 1,181 crore, compared to ₹ 254 crore in the same period last fiscal year, marking a 365% year-on-year growth. Revenue from operations rose 73% YoY to ₹ 3,774 crore during the quarter. For FY25, net profit jumped to ₹ 2,072 crore from ₹ 660 crore in FY24, driven by a significant rise in revenue to ₹ 10,851 crore. In comparison, the company had reported revenue of ₹ 6,497 crore in FY24. Suzlon's order book reached a record high of 5.6 GW by the end of FY25, with its S144 platform alone surpassing 5 GW—cementing its position as the dominant product in the Indian wind energy market. For the first time in its history, the company's management has issued guidance, projecting 60% growth across all key parameters in FY26. This forward-looking statement has been well received by the Street, reflecting the company's confidence and preparedness for future growth. Inox Wind posted a consolidated net profit of ₹ 190.34 crore in the March quarter, a more than fivefold increase from ₹ 38.74 crore in Q4 FY24, driven by a strong surge in revenues. The company's revenue from operations more than doubled to ₹ 1,310.65 crore in Q4 FY25, up from ₹ 569 crore in the same quarter last year. It reported an order book of 3.2 GW as of March 2025, up from 2.6 GW in March 2024. In Q4 FY25, execution stood at 236 MW, compared to 129 MW in Q4 FY24 and 140 MW in Q3 FY25. For FY25, the management had guided for 800 MW in annual execution, and the company achieved 705 MW. Looking ahead, management has guided for 1,200 MW and 2,000 MW execution in FY26 and FY27, respectively. JM Financial expects execution to accelerate to 1,150 MW in FY26 and 1,750 MW in FY27. City Proposes Rs510 Crore Mobility Overhaul With 8 Flyovers, 3 ROBs To Ease Traffic Woes

1 2 Nagpur: To decongest major junctions and streamline city traffic, the newly proposed Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) outlines the construction of eight grade separators and three Rail Over/Under Bridges (ROBs/RUBs) across Nagpur. The Rs510 crore draft plan, prepared by MahaMetro in collaboration with RITES, is still in the proposal stage and open to feedback from all stakeholders. The project focuses on addressing key traffic choke points and eliminating delays caused by level crossings. Grade separators, which include flyovers and underpasses, form the core of the strategy and are planned in three phases. Two flyovers estimated at Rs90 crore will be taken up in the first phase. The remaining six, split evenly between phase 2 and phase 3, are projected to cost Rs135 crore each, bringing the total flyover investment to Rs360 crore. Proposed flyover locations include high-traffic zones such as RBI Chowk, Manewada Chowk, Ajni Square, Koradi Naka, Kamptee, Medical Chowk, Tathagat Chowk, and New Katol Naka. To ease congestion at railway level crossings, three ROBs/RUBs have also been proposed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologista recomenda: simples truque elimina o fungo facilmente Acabe com o Fungo Undo These will be developed in later stages of the CMP — two in phase 2 with an estimated cost of Rs100 crore and one in phase 3 costing Rs50 crore. The ROBs are designed as 4-lane carriageways with a 30-meter railway span and a vertical clearance of 6.5 meters, aiming to meet long-term capacity demands. Officials emphasised that the CMP is not a finalised blueprint but a dynamic framework built on present infrastructure assessments and future urban growth projections. Input is being actively encouraged before any implementation decisions are made. Last month, a meeting was held at the divisional commissionerate with all key stakeholders, including MahaMetro, NMC, NIT, the traffic department, and others, to discuss the CMP. This was the second such meeting on the CMP. Officials stated that a final round of discussions will be held soon, after which the plan will be submitted to the state govt for approval prior to implementation. "The CMP is a vision document. It looks at both present needs and long-term requirements. We want experts and stakeholders to weigh in before anything is finalised," said a senior official involved in the project. The plan also complements other long-term strategies, such as strengthening public transport, improving pedestrian infrastructure, and enhancing last-mile connectivity. While the current Rs510 crore proposal prioritises high-impact traffic zones, further infrastructure upgrades could be incorporated based on feedback and funding. Once finalised and approved, the CMP will serve as a key roadmap for urban mobility development in Nagpur over the next decade. For now, the focus remains on consultation, refinement, and building consensus around the city's transport future.
