'Home Turn' shows a side of Daytona you won't see during the Daytona 500
If you're looking to get a sense of what Daytona Beach is actually like ahead of the Daytona 500, you can do it in under 30 minutes instead of booking a trip to Florida.
'Home Turn,' a show hosted by Yahoo Sports' Jay Busbee, debuted on NASCAR's YouTube channel on Tuesday. The documentary — available at the top of this post — is about the city and culture of Daytona and was a partnership between NASCAR Studios and Bluefoot Entertainment, the group behind the 'TrueSouth' series on the SEC Network.
The show has plenty of nuggets for those who haven't been to Daytona at all or those of us that have been to the area too many times to count. Even Busbee said he learned a lot while filming.
'I'd always known the history of the area, but the way you can draw a literal straight line from the sands at the waterline right to the start-finish line at Daytona International Speedway, both literally and metaphorically, is pretty great — the same drive that pushed men to rip down the beach at 300 miles an hour a century ago pushes them to claim the lead coming out of Turn 4 on the final lap today,' Busbee said.
'Plus, I learned why DIS is shaped the way it is ... there used to be a dog track beyond what is now Turn 1, and so they created the tri-oval so they could have both the size and the banking they wanted. The dog track is long gone, but the tri-oval shape remains.'
Daytona is a city known for NASCAR, of course, but also its role as a host for MTV's 'Spring Break' for many years. The area is trying to get past that now, and like any community looking to remake its image, it's not an easy process. In a conversation near the end of the show, lifelong Daytona resident and Daytona Beach News-Journal writer Ken Willis notes that Daytona is caught in the past while also attempting to modernize itself.
It was easy to see how that situation applies to NASCAR too. The stock car series has experienced a lot of turnover in the past decade as the boom years of the 2000s get further and further away. Its new crop of drivers aren't on the star paths the likes of Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were on, and NASCAR is attempting to figure out how to navigate its new and much more niche place in the sports world.
'It's a great connection, because both NASCAR and Daytona Beach had such mountainous highs in the past, and those highs cast a long shadow," Busbee said. "Both of them are having to adjust to new tastes — people aren't as interested in massing at a beach and sleeping 10 to a hotel room for Spring Break anymore, and people aren't as interested in sitting for four-plus hours to watch racing any more. Plus, you always romanticize your past over the allegedly less-colorful present, and that's what both NASCAR and Daytona Beach have to contend with — people's memories versus current reality. Both are in the process of reinventing themselves, and both are now recognizing that what worked in the past won't work to carry them into the future.'

Questions, answers about appeal court ruling in NASCAR's favor in matter with 23XI, Front Row
Here is a breakdown of Thursday's court decision and its impact: WHAT HAPPENED THURSDAY? A three-judge panel from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled to vacate the preliminary injunction that a U.S. District court judge had granted 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports to run as chartered teams despite not signing the charter agreement. HOW DOES THURSDAY'S DECISION IMPACT MATTERS THIS WEEKEND AT MICHIGAN? It does not in any way. WHY? 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports can file a petition for rehearing (requesting the court reconsider its decision) or a petition for rehearing en banc —meaning the full Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals addresses the matters instead of the three-judge panel. This must be filed within 14 calendar days after entry of judgment (June 5). So that would put the deadline at June 19. IF THE TEAMS DO NOT SEEK A REHEARING, THEN WHAT HAPPENS? The decision by the three-judge panel becomes effective seven days after the expiration of time for filing a petition for rehearing. In this matter, that would mean the panel's decision could become effective on June 26 — two days before the Atlanta race. WHAT HAPPENS IN THAT SITUATION? The 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports cars would be classified as open cars instead of chartered cars. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THEIR CHARTERS? That would be up to NASCAR. SO 23XI RACING AND FRONT ROW MOTORSPORTS COULD CONCEIVABLY FAIL TO QUALIFY FOR RACES IF THEY LOST THEIR CHARTERS? If they were an open team, yes, but, in the 50 races since the start of last year, only two — the Daytona 500 last year and this year — had any cars fail to qualify. BUT BOTH TEAMS WOULD EARN LESS MONEY AS AN OPEN TEAM, CORRECT? Yes, but before one goes too far down this road, let's see what 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports decide to do after today's court opinion. For now, 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports remain chartered teams and their six cars are all chartered cars. WHAT WAS THE RESPONSE FROM THE TEAMS THURSDAY? This is the statement from Jeffrey Kessler, the lead attorney for 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports: 'We are disappointed by today's ruling by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and are reviewing the decision to determine our next steps. This ruling is based on a very narrow consideration of whether a release of claims in the charter agreements is anti-competitive and does not impact our chances of winning at trial scheduled for December 1. We remain confident in our case and committed to racing for the entirety of this season as we continue our fight to create a fair and just economic system for stock car racing that is free of anticompetitive, monopolistic conduct.' WHAT DID THE THREE-JUDGE PANEL STATE IN ITS OPINION? 'In entering a preliminary injunction in this case, the district court held that the plaintiffs (23XI and Front Row) were likely to succeed on the merits of their antitrust action against the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, LLC (NASCAR), and its CEO, James France, because NASCAR, as an alleged monopolist, required the plaintiffs, as a condition of doing business with them, to enter into a release for past conduct. Because that theory of antitrust law is not supported by any case of which we are aware, we conclude that it was not a likely basis for success on the merits and vacate the injunction.' The judges later stated in their opinion … 'In short, because we have found no support for the proposition that a business entity or person violates the antitrust laws by requiring a prospective participant to give a release for past conduct as a condition for doing business, we cannot conclude that the plaintiffs made a clear showing that they were likely to succeed on the merits of that theory. And without satisfaction of the likelihood-of-success element, the plaintiffs were not entitled to a preliminary injunction. … We therefore conclude that the district court abused its discretion in entering the preliminary injunction that it did. HOW DOES THIS IMPACT THE LAWSUIT 23XI RACING AND FRONT ROW MOTORSPORTS FILED LAST YEAR VS. NASCAR? It does not. Trial is scheduled for Dec. 1.

Belmont Stakes 2025 odds, picks: Best bet, favorites, expert predictions, post positions
The 157th running of the Belmont Stakes is Saturday with a 7:04 p.m. ET post time at Saratoga Springs, New York. Both Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty (2-1 on morning line) and Preakness winner Journalism (8-5 morning line favorite) are in the eight-horse field. The race will be taking place at Saratoga Springs instead of the usual Belmont Park race track in Elmont, New York, due to track repairs. Yahoo Sports spoke with Jared DeRossett, retail sports analyst for TwinSpires, to preview the favorites and long shots in the race, as well as get a few bets he likes. The favorites DeRossett: "The much anticipated rematch of Journalism and Sovereignty is certainly showing itself with odds of 8-5 and 2-1, respectively, with a slight nod to Journalism early on. Journalism shouldn't have to sit as far back as he did in the Derby, and hopefully doesn't have to overcome as much of a troubled trip as he did in the Preakness. Sovereignty should be a bit more well-rested, and ready to fire for the showdown. These two will be duking it out for odds-on favorite leading up to the race, likely hovering around their morning line [odds]." Other horses to watch DeRossett: "A couple horses I'll be keeping an eye on for the exotics are No. 3 Rodriguez and No. 5 Crudo. Crudo is taking a huge jump [up] in class, but won going away in the NGS Sir Barton at Pimlico on Preakness Day. Rodriguez and [Crudo] should be battling for the lead early on and could work out a trip similar to Gosger in the Preakness. Advertisement "Baeza [out of the No. 6 post], interestingly enough, has taken the early money, moving him to favorite at 2-1. It's Thursday and it's early, so I absolutely don't expect that to hold, but interesting to note as advance wager pools opened at TwinSpires. He ran a strong third at the Derby and could take a step forward in his second race on the East Coast." Best bet "I'll likely be playing some exotics with Journalism and Sovereignty keyed in spots, depends on how the odds shake out, though. I'll have some closer to race day."
