
The New York Times' first generative AI deal is with Amazon
The New York Times has struck a multi-year AI licensing deal with Amazon that will bring its 'editorial content to a variety of Amazon customer experiences,' the outlet announced on Thursday. Under the agreement, Amazon will include summaries and short excerpts of The Times' content in products like Alexa, and will also use Times articles to help train its AI models.
The deal comes over a year after The Times sued Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement, accusing the companies of 'copying and using millions' of its articles to train their AI models, while depriving the publication of subscription, licensing, advertising, and affiliate revenue. Several other outlets have sued OpenAI on similar grounds, including The Intercept, Raw Story, CBC/Radio-Canada, and the owner of IGN and CNET. Other publishers, like The Atlantic, News Corp, and The Verge parent company Vox Media have struck AI licensing deals.
In addition to using content from The Times, Amazon will also draw from the outlet's sports-focused outlet, The Athletic, and its recipe hub, NYT Cooking. Amazon launched its AI-upgraded Alexa Plus in early access earlier this year and claims 'hundreds of thousands of customers' have tried the assistant. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
'The deal is consistent with our long-held principle that high-quality journalism is worth paying for,' Meredith Kopit Levien, the CEO of The New York Times Company, said in a statement to the Times. 'It aligns with our deliberate approach to ensuring that our work is valued appropriately, whether through commercial deals or through the enforcement of our intellectual property rights.'

Is Amazon Paying $4 Billion to Break Up With UPS?
Amazon is planning to spend up to $4 billion to enhance its ability to deliver in rural areas. The e-commerce giant has forged a partnership with FedEx on the delivery front. United Parcel Service is dramatically reducing its relationship with Amazon. 10 stocks we like better than Amazon › Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is an online retail powerhouse, selling and delivering its own products and acting as a middleman for other retailers. The company's delivery trucks are ubiquitous in some areas of the country. But it has even bigger aspirations when it comes to getting products to customers. So why did United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) decide to stop handling as many Amazon deliveries? As with any good breakup drama, the story between Amazon and UPS, as United Parcel Service is called for short, is hard to call. UPS says that the Amazon business it was doing was high volume, but low margin. That meant that it didn't add enough to the bottom line to make it worth the top-line benefit. UPS says it plans to step away from half of the business it does with Amazon over the next couple of years. That effort is in keeping with UPS' goal of improving the quality of its business. But management highlighted that it will still work with Amazon on some things. Notably, Amazon is increasingly good at delivering its own wares, but it doesn't have a strong handle on returns. With a large retail store network, UPS can still provide return services to Amazon at an attractive return for UPS shareholders. So the relationship isn't dead -- it's just different. Or, you could say, they will still be friends. UPS' decision to put limits on its relationship with Amazon is a problem for Amazon. While it is true that Amazon has been growing its distribution capabilities, it now has to step up more quickly than it might have planned. To that end, Amazon recently announced that it was making a capital investment of up to $4 billion to enhance its ability to make rural deliveries. And it inked a deal with UPS' peer FedEx (NYSE: FDX), where that carrier will handle larger packages for Amazon. The market saw all of this as a win for FedEx and a loss for UPS. For Amazon, it wasn't too big a deal, noting that the stock is widely adored on Wall Street right now. While Amazon's stock is about 15% below its all-time high, its price-to-sales and price-to-earnings ratios are both above their five-year averages. And they are both fairly lofty on an absolute basis, as well. Still, it looks a little like Amazon is scrambling to take on the distribution services that UPS is willingly giving up. So what about UPS? The company's stock has lost more than half of its value since hitting a peak in 2022. In fact, it made the Amazon announcement just as it appeared it was getting its business back on track following a period of weakness that led to a corporate overhaul. Indeed, revenue had started to grow and margins appeared to have stabilized. Moving away from low-value Amazon business was a preemptive move made at a time when UPS had shifted from business weakness to business strength. In other words, UPS is being proactive because it sees the writing on the wall. Its Amazon business was going to keep shrinking anyway, so why not get ahead of it? The costs Amazon is incurring to make up for the loss of UPS as a delivery service is a sign that this was a big deal. But it will be a bigger deal for Amazon than UPS, since UPS was clear that the business wasn't very profitable. In fact, UPS could end up the big winner if the ability to slim down allows it to further improve its margins, even if the top line of its income statement shrinks along the way. Wall Street loves Amazon, and perhaps for good reason. But the stock is trading with a premium price tag. UPS, which could actually end up being the big winner in its breakup with Amazon, is deeply unloved. Notably, its price-to-sales and price-to-earnings ratios are well below their five-year averages. The stock's dividend yield, meanwhile, is historically high at around 6.7%. There's no question that UPS has extended the length of its turnaround by breaking up with Amazon. But the near-term pain could be exactly what it needs to rise up again. NHS set for boost of up to £30bn as other budgets feel squeeze
The NHS is expected to receive a funding boost of up to £30 billion in the spending review next week at the expense of other public services. The Department of Health is set to be handed a 2.8% annual increase in its day-to-day budget over a three-year period. The cash injection, which amounts to a rise of about £30 billion by 2028, or £17 billion in real terms, will see other areas including police and councils squeezed, The Times newspaper reported. Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to ensure that by the next election 92% of patients in England waiting for planned treatment are seen within 18 weeks of being referred. Latest NHS data suggests around 60% of people are currently seen in this time and figures released last month showed the overall number of patients on waiting lists had risen slightly from 6.24 million to 6.25 million. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has acknowledged that she had been forced to turn down requests for funding in a sign of the behind-the-scenes wrangling over her spending review. She insisted the blame for the tight economic situation lay with the Conservatives rather than her rigid rules on borrowing and spending. The Chancellor said despite a £190 billion increase in funding over the spending review period 'not every department will get everything that they want next week and I have had to say no to things that I want to do too'. On top of the increase in day-to-day spending, funded in part by the tax hikes Ms Reeves set out in her budget, looser borrowing rules will help support a £113 billion investment package. Economists have warned the Chancellor faces 'unavoidably' tough choices when she sets out departmental spending plans on June 11. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) think tank said defence and the NHS will dominate the review, raising the prospect of cuts to other unprotected departments.

Digital ad budgets slowing in 2025, UBS finds
-- Growth in digital advertising budgets is set to slow in 2025, according to a UBS, signalling caution amid economic uncertainty and potential tariff impacts. Buyers expect a 5.5% increase in digital ad spending over the 12 months, a slowdown of nearly one percentage point from the prior year, UBS said. Facebook (NASDAQ:META) is the only major digital platform expected to see an acceleration in ad budget growth, with buyers planning to increase spending by 1.7% year-over-year. Instagram growth is set to slow, though it remains a top choice for social commerce and potential TikTok budget shifts. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is forecast to see a relatively modest slowdown in ad growth to 2.8%, while Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) faces steeper deceleration across both its Search and YouTube platforms. YouTube's ad budget growth is expected to fall to 4.1% from higher levels last year. Among other platforms, Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) and Snap are both expected to see slight declines in ad spending, while The Trade Desk (NASDAQ:TTD) is projected to maintain relatively stable growth in connected TV budgets. On the traditional media side, nearly 60% of buyers expect to cut TV spending over the next two years, though sports programming remains a bright spot. Disney's cable networks showed the strongest ad spend intentions, while FOX showed the most year-over-year improvement. CTV continues to gain traction, with Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), YouTube, and Amazon Prime leading in advertiser interest, even as overall enthusiasm dipped slightly from last year.
