EXCLUSIVE The controversial visual cues Pete Hegseth uses to broadcast his beliefs that have landed in the hot seat AGAIN

Daily Mail5 days ago

Pete Hegseth, well known for using his body as a billboard for beliefs, is drawing ire again for his choice of political symbolism.
Critics both in and out of the defense department are railing against the defense secretary for wearing a Betsy Ross flag in the breast pocket of his suit - first on Memorial Day and then again Shangri-La Dialogue Summit in Singapore. The image is seen by many as a dog whistle for white supremacy and other forms of extremism.
'WTF!,' wrote Twitter influencer Suzie Rizzio. 'Why is Pete Hegseth using The Betsy Ross flag in his pocket! The Betsy Ross flag is a White Supremacist flag! The Patriot Front Group were marching with these flags last weekend in Kansas!'
'The guy can't show up to a simple ceremony without pissing off half the people in the building,' one Pentagon insider told the Daily Mail. 'This isn't tone deafness. This is outright aggression in terms of optics.'
The image featuring 13 stars in a circle and 13 red and white stripes may seem innocuous enough. It was, after all, the original flag of the United States created in the late 1700s to symbolize the country's first 13 colonies.
The design is commonly attributed to Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, although the identity of its creator is a topic of much historical debate. In any case, the flag remains a proud, patriotic symbol for many Americans.
But the meanings of historic symbols morph over time, and in recent years the flag has become a more subtle alternative to the Confederate flag as an emblem of white supremacist and extremist groups.
Those include the Patriot Front and the American Identity Movement (formerly Identity Evropa), both classified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Various state chapters of the Ku Klux Klan also have used the flag to cover altars, adorn their pamphlets and carry at rallies.
Members of the Patriot Front, a far-right militia group, participate in an anti-abortion march in Washington DC on January 14. Many of the flags they're holding are Betsy Ross designs, which has morphed into an alternative to the confederate flag in recent years for these groups
Because the image is inextricably linked to a time of white power and slavery — when the ideals of freedom and liberty it represented didn't apply to enslaved people, women and many others — some social justice groups see it as a hate symbol.
They say the flag has become particularly uncomfortable in the ultra-polarized Trump era, and is especially insulting when worn by Hegseth, who has abolished all diversity, equity and inclusion offices and programs from the military.
The Pentagon has framed that move as a way to 'ensure that promotion and selection and evaluation are all based purely on merit.' But critics see it as an insult to people of color, contributions they've made in the military and their continuing struggling for an equal playing field in the U.S.
'As a (public relations) move, this is another nightmare,' the insider told us.
The Defense Department formally defended Hegseth's choice of symbolism while appearing with President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance at Arlington National Cemetery on May 26.
'The Betsy Ross flag is a patriotic symbol of American independence. Secretary Hegseth is proud to display his love of our country, its people, and its history — especially on Memorial Day,' reads a statement Friday by Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson.
Hegseth's pocket square, or at least one like it, is made of '100% polyester silk' and sold online for $24 by a veteran-owned company that urges its customers to 'Wear what you war.'
The dust-up about his pocket stuffer comes three days after he made headlines for a tattoo scripted in Arabic on his arm.
Eagle-eyed observers noticed the tat last Tuesday, when Hegseth - a double Bronze Star holder who served tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq - posted a video of himself doing push-ups and jumping jacks with Navy Seals at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.
The tattoo spells out the word 'kafir,' which in the Quran means 'disbeliever' or 'infidel.'
Muslims immediately decried the tattoo as a sign of disrespect and bigotry.
'This isn't just a personal choice; it's a clear symbol of Islamophobia from the man overseeing U.S. wars,' Nerdeen Kiswani, a pro-Palestinian activist in New York City wrote on social media, describing the tattoo as 'normalization of Islamophobia at the highest levels of power.'
'To the Muslim world the tattoo will be seen as an open declaration of Hegseth's enmity towards them,' wrote commenter Tam Hussein on X.
Others defended the tattoo as a message embraced by veterans of Middle Eastern wars.
'This word is widely recognized among military veterans, especially those who served in the Middle East, as a symbol of defiance against Islamic terrorists,' wrote X user Brother Rachid.
'It's commonly seen on stickers, the backs of trucks, T-shirts, and mugs. Personally, I had it on a hat, a mug, and even on the door of my office.'
Hegseth's 'kafir' seems to be the latest addition among at least a dozen tattoos he has said symbolize his American patriotism and Christian faith.
The words 'Deus Vult' right above it on his right inner arm is widely seen as a symbol of Christian nationalism. Even more controversial is the giant Jerusalem- or Crusader's Cross tattooed on his chest, which many Muslims see as celebrating the slaughter of their people in holy war and Democrats claimed during his confirmation hearings is a symbol of Christian right-wing extremism.
Both, critics say, evoke a conspiracy to rewrite history that America was founded as a Christian nation.
Hegseth has acknowledged that the Jerusalem Cross caused him to be denied a chance to serve in a secure detail in his National Guard unit in Washington D.C.
'I was deemed an extremist because of a tattoo by my National Guard unit in Washington, D.C., and my orders were revoked to guard the Biden inauguration… a Jerusalem cross tattoo which is just a Christian symbol,' he told podcaster Shawn Ryan in an interview.
Scrutiny of Hegseth has been intense since opponents of his appointment - including many in the Defense Department itself - have said the former FOX News commentator wasn't qualified to lead the 3.4 million military and civilian personnel who serve in the federal government's biggest department.
Criticism is especially high as he has faced mounting pressure to resign after sharing detailed Yemen strike plans in a group text chat with other Trump officials on the Signal app.
The Betsy Ross flag made headlines in 2019, when Nike announced it would pull July 4th-themed sneakers bearing the symbol because Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback and civil rights leader who served as a spokesperson for the company, expressed concerns about its potentially offensive symbolism.
The Southern Poverty Law Center sees the flag's continued use by extremist groups as telegraphing a desire 'to return to a time when all non-white people were viewed as subhuman and un-American,' Keegan Hankes, a research analyst for the group has said.
'Historically, these symbols have been used by white supremacists, both to hearken back to a time when Black people were enslaved, while also painting themselves as the inheritors of the 'true' American tradition.'
The image also has been tied to groups in the anti-government, extremist right-wing Patriot Movement, including the militia movement, which has been using the Betsy Ross flag — among other Revolutionary War-era symbols — since the mid-1990s.
Here are Hegseth's other tattoos:
Jerusalem Cross on his chest
The aforementioned Jerusalem Cross is one of his most distinctive tattoos. It consists of a large Christian cross surrounded by four smaller crosses in each quadrant.
It is an centuries old symbol stretching back to the 13th century where it was used as the symbol of the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the Crusades.
'Deus Vult' on his right bicep
Tattooed on his bicep, Hegseth has the phrase 'Deus Vult' which means 'God will it.' This was a phrase that originated from the First Crusade as a battle cry for Christians.
Hegseth's book American Crusade, which he describes as an examination of what America would be like without American ideal, also ends with 'Deus Vult.'
Cross and sword on right forearm
Other Christian iconography on his arm includes a cross with a sword through it which represents the Matthew 10:34 verse of the bible.
This reads: 'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth.
I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.'
This was the first tattoo he got while on vacation with his family.
Hegseth also has a Chi-Ro symbol on his upper arm.
This letters from the Greek alphabet: chi (which looks like an X) and rho (which looks like a P). They are also the first two letters of Christ in Greek.
The monogram was an early symbol used to represent Christians.
'We the people' and 1775 on right forearm
His other tattoos mostly center around American patriotism and include many symbols and iconography associated with the USA's independence movement.
On his forearm he has 'We the People' which is the first line of the constitution.
Above this tattoo, he has the date 1775 in roman numerals - the same year that the American War of Independence started.
Hegseth's elbow is surrounded by 13 stars which perhaps is a reference to the stars on the Betsy Ross flag - one of the first flags produced to represent the USA and the precursor to the modern star-spangled banner.
'Join or Die' snake on inside of his forearm
He also has the iconic 'join or die' snake, which is earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by colonists in Colonial America, on his arm.
The cartoon, allegedly drawn by Benjamin Franklin himself in 1754, was published in the Pennsylvania Gazette shows a snake chopped into eight segments - rather than the 13 colonies - with New England included as one, Delaware a part of Pennsylvania and Georgia missing entirely.
American flag and sniper rifle on the upper arm
Hegseth also has a modern depiction of the current flag with a sniper at the bottom of the stars and stripes, signaling his support for the Second Amendment of the Constitutional preserving the right to keep and bear arms.
Hegseth posted a picture of him receiving the body art on his Instagram at NYHC Tattoos in New York which is one of the oldest tattoo parlors in Manhattan.
Infantry Regiment patch also on the upper arm
Hegseth also has a tattoo of his patch used by the 187th Infantry Regiment of the US army which Hegseth was a member of.
This was a glider infantry unit during the Second World War which later fought in the Korean War as part of the airborne regimental combat team. The regiment also fought in later wars such as Vietnam, the Gulf war and the Iraq war.
During his interview with the Big Lead, Hegseth revealed he plans to fill his entire arm with tattoos and then 'resist the temptation' to get anymore.

Trump warns of 'consequences' if Musk funds rivals - as post claiming president appears in Epstein files removed

Donald Trump has warned of "serious consequences" if Elon Musk funds his political rivals, as a social media post claiming the US president appears in files relating to the disgraced paedophile Jeffrey Epstein has been removed. Speaking on Saturday to Sky News' US partner NBC News, Mr Trump warned of repercussions if Musk funded Democrats who opposed his sweeping budget bill. "If he does, he'll have to pay the consequences for that," Trump said in a phone interview. "He'll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that," he added, not specifying what those consequences would be. 'The truth will come out' It came after the tech billionaire made the allegation on X as he traded blows with the US president in a dramatic public row. In the post, which now appears to have been deleted, Musk said: "@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. "Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out." He gave no evidence for the claim, which was dismissed by the White House - with the post disappearing from his social media platform by Sunday. Users clicking on the message - first posted on Thursday - were instead greeted with: " page doesn't exist. Try searching for something else." Epstein killed himself in his jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking minors. JD Vance has his say Amid the fallout, vice president JD Vance said Musk was making a "huge mistake" going after Mr Trump but characterised him as an "emotional guy" who got frustrated. He made the comments in an interview with comedian and podcaster Theo Von - one of the "manosphere" influencers the Trump team targeted to gain votes with young men during the election. "I hope that eventually Elon comes back into the fold. Maybe that's not possible now because he's gone so nuclear," Mr Vance said. He also claimed that such outbursts "happen to everyone", adding: "I've flown off the handle way worse than Elon Musk did in the last 24 hours." 'Big ugly spending bill' Musk and Mr Trump's relationship broke down publicly on Thursday, just days after the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive left his role as a special government employee. In a fiery exchange, Musk posted a series of messages on X criticising the president's signature tax and spending bill as a "big ugly spending bill". President Trump posted on Truth Social, saying Musk had been "wearing thin" and claimed he "asked him to leave" his government position - something Musk denied. Musk then hit back with his claim about the US president appearing in the Epstein files. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed the comment in a statement. "This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted," she said. "The president is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again." The spat hit Tesla shares, which closed down 14.3% on Thursday, losing about $150bn (£111bn) in value. In an interview with ABC News, Mr Trump was asked about reports a phone call was scheduled between him and Musk on Friday.

Musk's AI bot used to mock him with image of Tesla on sale

By Elon Musk's own AI bot has been used to troll the billionaire with a picture of Donald Trump's Tesla for sale on the White House lawn. Only months ago, the president had five Tesla cars delivered to the White House lawn after he shared on Truth Social that he was looking to buy one for its full price in solidarity with Musk. Yet now, as tensions escalate between the SpaceX CEO and Trump, many are left wondering if the president will part from his Tesla. Trump had purchased a vehicle from Musk's electric fleet as stocks plummeted and the billionaire was being heavily criticized for his work leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). After a motorcade of Tesla cars rolled up the White House, Trump was seen taking a liking to a red Model S and revealed his longtime aide would be allowed to drive it. He also revealed he had gifted his granddaughter Kai her very own Cybertruck last year. Despite their previously close relationship, they are now well involved in a public slinging match. Musk had hit out at Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' which passed the House last month but is now held up in the Senate. Despite their previously close workings, Musk wrote: 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.' Musk has also posted on X to claim that the president is plunging the US into financial ruin. He wrote: 'This immense level of overspending will drive America into debt slavery!" In another, Musk asserted: 'Mammoth spending bills are bankrupting America!' Around 2am on Wednesday morning, Musk continued his tirade on his social media platform. He also reposted a series of tweets aligning himself with Republican Sen. Ran Paul of Kentucky, who has been vocal about his opposition to the spending bill. 'I've been pretty consistent in my time in the Senate: I oppose deficit spending—no matter which party is in charge. If we don't get serious about reigning in the debt, the next generation will pay the price,' Paul wrote in an X post that Musk reposted to his page. 'Fiscal responsibility isn't a campaign slogan,' Paul continued. 'It's a duty which I take very seriously.' But Musk's outburst did not end with his qualms about political spending as he also claimed to have been the sole reason Trump won the 2024 election. After Musk sent a raft of insults at Trump, the president fired back on Thursday afternoon. 'Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!' he said on Truth Social. He added in a follow up post: 'The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. 'I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!' The pair's spat reached new levels after Musk suggested the President should be impeached and replaced with 40-year-old Vice President JD Vance before dropping a his biggest allegation yet - that Trump was featured in the Epstein files . '@RealDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,' Musk wrote. 'Have a nice day, DJT!' Jeffrey Epstein is a serial child sexual offender who died in prison in 2019 . Trump pledged to release the files related to Epstein, with Attorney General Pam Bondi releasing some pages in February , but most of that information was already in the public domain. 'Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out,' Musk added. Trump didn't directly respond to Musk's Epstein charge, instead posting what amounted to a shrug on Truth Social, while also continuing to back the 'big, beautiful bill.' 'I don't mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago,' Trump wrote. 'This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress.' Musk's latest online assault of Trump came moments after the president went on a tirade about the billionaire while hosting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office. 'Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will any more, I was surprised,' Trump said. The president suggested that Musk was angry - not over the bill ballooning the deficit - but because the Trump administration has pulled back on electric vehicle mandates, which negatively impacted Tesla. Tesla stock took a series of hits during Musk's time leading DOGE, and is now down 17.6 percent amid the pair's feud. Musk himself admitted he was leading his companies with 'great difficulty' amid his DOGE work, as Tesla boycotts, protests and vandalism stirred the US. In March, crowds of hundreds protested the billionaire and his work in DOGE after thousands of federal employees were fired and terminating hundreds of aid contracts and federal leases. Signs that read 'No Dictators in the USA' and 'Burn a Tesla: Save Democracy' were seen in New York City at one protest. In Texas, multiple bombs were found inside a Tesla showroom in Austin. An arsonist used Molotov cocktails to fire bomb five Teslas before firing rounds into the burning vehicles at a dealership in Las Vegas, Nevada in March. The first of the alleged attackers to face charges was named as Adam Matthew Lansky, 41, who is accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at a Tesla dealership in Salem, Oregon on January 20. Lanksy allegedly threw a 'large heavy object through the dealership window', and was armed with a suppressed AR-15 at the time, reports Fox News. On March 7, Daniel Clarke-Pounder, 24, allegedly vandalized a dealership in Charleston, South Carolina, by spray-painting messages reading '[expletive] Trump' and 'Long Live Ukraine' before lighting three charging stations on fire. Trump, at the time, declared that the violence against Tesla was akin to 'domestic terrorism.' It became clear that the bromance between Musk and Trump was over earlier this year as reports emerged regarding clashes the billionaire had with those in the president's inner circle . Upon his exit from DOGE, however, it became more likely that the pair would part ways.

Killer, 34, murdered and dismembered student, 19, on first date after ‘watching Netflix series showing mutilation'

A 34-YEAR-OLD man murdered and dismembered a college student, 19, on the first date after allegedly watching a Netflix series showing mutilation. Maxwell Anderson was convicted of homicide and dismembering a corpse on Friday for the heinous murder of Sade Robinson last year. 10 10 10 The two had met at a bar and spent the rest of their evening getting dinner and drinks at the Twisted Fisherman in Milwaukee. Teen Sade then went back to Anderson's apartment where, at one point in the night, the alleged killer put on Netflix show Love, Death & Robots. One episode of the series called "The Drowned Giant" portrays the horrific mutilation of a human body on the beach. In a chilling similarity, prosecutors have claimed that monster Anderson dismembered Sade's body on a beach in Wisconsin overlooking Lake Michigan. Juror Melissa Blascoe told the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel:"I was like [...] that's disgusting because that could have been where he got some of his ideas or fantasies. "I physically felt like I was gonna throw up at that point. I know a lot of people were shaking and crying." Anderson was also charged with arson and hiding a corpse in connection with Sade's death. He was found guilty on all counts. Cops said it's believed Anderson spread the 19-year-old's remains across Milwaukee County and burned her car in an attempt to hide key evidence. Surveillance footage showed Sade's car leaving Anderson's apartment in the early hours of April 2. Eerie new video shows 'killer' dad Travis Decker as cops fear 'expert' soldier won't be caught for MONTHS after murders It then arrived at the beach along the shores of Lake Michigan. When Sade didn't turn up for work the next day, concern was sparked on her whereabouts. The student's manager Justin Romano told CNN that she was "very outgoing, she would talk to everybody here." He added: "She was always there to lighten the mood." After Sade hadn't showed up for her shift - which "wasn't like her at all" - Justin added: "We kind of knew something was up. "We had been calling her all day." Anderson is thought to have dismembered Sade and set her car alight behind an abandoned building. He then took a bus back to is apartment. 10 10 10 10 Despite "extreme fire damage" to Sade's car, cops where able to identify the outfit the 19-year-old had been wearing on the night of the date alongside part of an iPhone consistent with hers, CNN reports. Cops had been called to Warnimont Park after a human leg was horrifically discovered, which was later identified as belonging to Sade. Anderson had planned to kill the student weeks before her death, a "confidential informant" claimed, Fox News reports. Anderson's attorney Tony Cotton argued that the prosecution showed no evidence of his intention to kill Sade. The attorney also raised how Anderson didn't try to hide his identity as he travelled on public transport home and was also in clean clothes despite having allegedly dismembered Sade's body in a muddy location. Jurors reached their verdict in one hour on the ninth day of trial. Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Ian Vance-Curzan said: "While we are satisfied with this verdict, our hearts go out to the family of Sade Robinson." And Milwaukee County Sheriff's Det. JoAnn Donner - who had spent months working on the heartbreaking case - said: "My heart goes out to the family and [Sade's] friends and really, the community at large. "It's everyone's come together, and it's really hard to take that step back as a law enforcement officer and not get that really emotionally involved during the case. "I will admit that I did go back to my office after the verdict, and I had a good cry because I finally got to have that emotion. It does affect us too." And Sade's grieving mom Sheena Scarbrough said in a GoFundMe set up for her daughter's memorial service that she was a "loving daughter, a cherished sister, and a dear friend to many". Anderson is to be sentenced on August 15, where he faces a mandatory life sentence in prison. 10 10 10
