Driver killed in crash during police chase identified as 13-year-old girl
A young girl killed in a crash following a police chase in Itasca County on Sunday has been identified.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office has identified the girl as 13-year-old Angelica Bryan, of Cass Lake.
According to a preliminary BCA investigation, Bryan was driving a 2003 Honda Odyssey that authorities from the Itasca County Sheriff's Office were pursuing for driving without headlights at around 1:30 a.m. on April 20.
The vehicle was heading westbound on County Road 63 near the intersection of County Road 271 when a deputy activated their emergency lights in an attempt to pull the van over.
Per the BCA, driver failed to stop and accelerated away from the deputy, which initiated a pursuit. The investigation states that speeds of up to 90 mph were estimated during the pursuit.
The Minnesota State Patrol deployed a stop stick tire deflation device during the pursuit but it didn't make contact with the van's tires.
The BCA report says Bryan continued to drive with no headlights on Highway 6 and drove off the road just east of County Road 11, crashing into a tree.
Bryan was the only occupant in the van and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the van driven by Bryan was reported stolen the same night from a home in Cohasset.
The BCA says no physical contact was made with the van by any law enforcement officer's squad involved in the pursuit.
The investigation remains active.

Carlisle man accused of intentionally crashing minivan with 3 young children inside
Jun. 5—A Carlisle man is accused of choking his children's mother while driving a minivan in April with their three young children and his mother inside before intentionally crashing in Franklin. Riley Blaine Bowman, 37, was arraigned Wednesday in Warren County Common Pleas Court following his indictment by a county grand jury for felony counts of strangulation and endangering children. He also is charged with three OVI counts plus driving under suspension, all misdemeanors. Franklin police were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. April 30 for a report of a hit and run crash near the intersection Park and Miami avenues. A witness who called 911 reported the driver of a 2010 Honda Odyssey, later identified as Bowman, hit a fire hydrant and stop sign before fleeing. The caller followed the minivan to a South Avenue residence, according to a Franklin Division of Police report. Police spoke with a woman who had marks around her neck who told officers that Bowman was choking her in the van before he intentionally crashed. She said he refused to let her and the children out but did take them home before he left on foot with his mother. Franklin and Carlisle police began searching the area for Bowman, who was found at the corner of Forest Avenue and Sycamore Street in Franklin. Officers reported Bowman smelled of alcohol and that he admitted to drinking four or five shots. According to the police report, his blood alcohol level tested at .171, which is more than two times Ohio's .08 legal driving limit. Bowman also told officers he never touched his children's mother and said she grabbed and jerked the wheel, causing the crash, the report stated. Bowman is held in the Warren County Jail on a cash-only $25,000 bond. If he posts bail he will be on electronic home monitoring and must have no contact with the woman or children, court records show.
