Kwesst Micro Systems (TSXV:KWE), a developer of advanced tactical systems, has received a first order from a major North American defense systems integrator for prototype units of its latest Battlefield Laser Detection System (BLDS). The order supports a prominent armored vehicle program in North America.
The new-generation BLDS prototypes are designed to detect and alert against laser-based threats such as Laser Target Designators (LTDs), Laser Range Finders (LRFs), and beam-riding munitions—technologies that have significantly increased battlefield lethality in modern conflicts, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.
'The order announced today is a major validation of the strategic importance of our latest BLDS technology,' Sean Homuth, Kwesst's president and CEO explained in a media statement. 'It's a leap ahead in capability, combining low-cost in a flexible form factor for deployment in either soldier-worn or vehicle mounted configurations, enabling many more sensors to be deployed and networked for real-time situational awareness and drastically improved survivability of soldiers and high-value targets on the battlefield.'
'The modern battlefield has changed,' he added. 'Lasers are now a silent, invisible threat that can turn any soldier or vehicle into a target in seconds. BLDS gives them back those seconds, so they have a fighting chance.'
The current order includes non-networked prototypes, which are ready for delivery pending final documentation. These units will undergo rigorous performance testing across diverse operational scenarios. The results will inform the development of a fully-networked version of the system, which is expected to offer enhanced integration with vehicle and command systems.
This milestone follows KWESST's earlier success in delivering a previous generation of the BLDS to a NATO country via a European defense integrator on August 4th, 2023.
Kwesst's BLDS program reflects the company's broader commitment to equipping allied forces with cutting-edge defense technologies that address emerging threats on the modern battlefield.
Kwesst develops tactical systems for military and security forces with a focus on real-time situational awareness, non-lethal products and countermeasures against threats such as electronic detection, lasers and drones.
Kwesst Micro Systems stock (TSXV:KWE) opened trading 120 per cent higher at C$16.62.

Global Consortium Led by Nexus Core Systems to Build AI Factory Powered by 500 MW of Renewable Energy and Next-Generation AI Compute

LONDON, June 18, 2025 /CNW/ -- A global investment group led by Nexus Core Systems—and backed by Lloyds Capital, NAVER Cloud, Maroc Telecom, and powered by state-of-the-art accelerated computing, networking, and AI-native infrastructure—today unveiled plans to build advanced AI infrastructure in Morocco. The project will support the transformation of Morocco's leading industries as the country enters the era of AI and robotics. Located just 15 kilometers from Europe and directly connected via multiple subsea fiber corridors, Morocco offers a unique geographic advantage for delivering sovereign compute capacity to the European market. NAVER Cloud, in partnership with Nexus Core Systems and Lloyds Capital, will deploy the platform to provide secure, sovereign AI compute access to government and enterprise clients. The data centers will be built using modular infrastructure technology, enabling rapid deployment, scalable expansion, and efficient maintenance with minimal on-site construction risk. The first phase will launch in Q1 2026 with over 40 MW of next-generation AI accelerators designed for large-scale model training, making it one of the largest enterprise AI supercomputers in the region once operational. The full program will be powered by up to 500 MW of renewable energy under a strategic agreement with TAQA Morocco —ensuring long-term, cost-effective, and sustainable operations. NAVER, in collaboration with Nexus Core Systems, will integrate its proprietary hyperscale cloud platform—featuring the CLOVA AI suite, zero-trust security architecture, and in-region data residency controls—to meet strict data sovereignty and compliance requirements across EMEA. Maroc Telecom will serve as a go-to-market partner for the Kingdom of Morocco, leading commercial distribution efforts across enterprise and government channels. The company will leverage a white-labeled platform—powered by Nexus infrastructure and NAVER's AI technology—to support national AI adoption and accelerate digital transformation initiatives. "This collaboration will be an important turning point for NAVER's cloud and AI technologies to expand beyond Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East into the European market. We will continue to strengthen our capabilities so that NAVER can secure technological leadership and play a meaningful role in the rapidly evolving global AI value chain," said Chae Seon Ju, President of Strategic Business of NAVER. "Investing in cutting-edge AI infrastructure is a crucial step toward accelerating the development and adoption of AI across the entire EMEA region. We believe this initiative will generate valuable spillover effects—by enabling upskilling, fostering new collaborations, strengthening the broader AI ecosystem, and putting Morocco on the global map for sovereign AI," said Christopher Yoshida, CEO of Nexus Core Systems. This partnership will enable the next generation of AI-enabled services and innovation, spanning foundation model training, multimodal inference, robotics, autonomous learning, and high-performance data processing. By combining Nexus's infrastructure with NAVER's AI platform capabilities, the system will support deployment of advanced AI models that enhance performance, drive new efficiencies, and unlock transformative enterprise use cases across the region.

Carney to attend NATO, Canada-EU summits in Europe

Prime Minister Mark Carney heads to Europe on the weekend to attend summits on NATO and Canada-EU relations. The Prime Minister's Office confirmed Carney's travel plans today, after he wrapped up the G7 leaders' summit in Alberta. Carney will head to Brussels on Sunday to meet with European leaders. The Prime Minister's Office said the leaders will work to 'deepen the Canada-EU relationship across all sectors,' including trade and defence. Carney will then head to The Hague in the Netherlands for the NATO summit on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Prime Minister's Office said Carney will engage with allies at the summit to 'meet evolving threats in a more dangerous and divided world.' 0:47 Canada, U.S. aim to finalize new economic deal within 30 days, says Carney The NATO meeting likely will focus on defence spending. NATO allies are expected to adopt a plan to hike the defence spending target for members to five per cent of national GDP — a level Canada has not reached since the 1950s. Story continues below advertisement Carney announced last week that Canada will rapidly advance its military spending timeline to hit the current NATO target of two per cent of national GDP by adding $9 billion to the fiscal framework this year. NATO's GDP forecast puts Canada's economy at $3.1 trillion for the year, making its two per cent NATO commitment worth about $62.5 billion, according to senior government officials. The federal government is currently spending about 1.45 per cent of real GDP on defence and has not spent anything close to two per cent since 1990 — despite having promised its biggest allies for years that it would. At a news conference closing the G7 summit Tuesday, Carney said allies' attention will shift next week from addressing threats to economic security to addressing issues of global defence and security at the NATO and Canada-EU summits. 'We recognize that our leadership will be defined not just by the strength of our values but the values of our strength,' he told reporters. — With files from Kyle Duggan and Nick Murray
