River Breamish rerouting in Northumberland to be reversed
Work has begun to restore a river's traditional course after centuries of re-routing straightened it to create farmland.The historic meandering of a 1km (0.6 mile) section of the River Breamish on the Harehope Estate, south of Wooler in Northumberland, will be reinstated.Contractors are excavating and diverting the river into its historic channels, installing silt traps, shallow ponds, wetlands, embankment breaches and constructing new woody dams.The Breamish restoration is expected to be completed by late Summer, the Life Wader project said.
It is part of a wider River Till Restoration Strategy, named after the river the Breamish flows into.Disconnection from its floodplain has led to a decline in freshwater species, reduced biodiversity and an increased risk of flooding, Life Wader said.The work, which has been in development since 2019 and received planning approval in 2024, got under way late last week.
Phil Kearney, project manager at Tweed Forum which is involved in the restoration, said: "We should be hopefully complete within about eight to 10 weeks."Jim Heslop, from the Environment Agency in north-east England, said the scheme will give "a boost for wildlife".It is part of a five-year, £5.8m nature recovery project co-funded by the European Union and due for completion in December 2026.

Urgent 'do not eat' warning issued for popular sweets due to cancer fears
Officials have issued an urgent recall for a number of popular Jolly Rancher sweets over fears they contain ingredients linked to cancer. Those who've already eaten them should not panic, the Food Standards Agency has warned, as the risk is low, but they should be disposed of. These include Hard Candy, 'Misfits' Gummies. Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, and Berry Gummies, all made by the Hershey company. The sweets contain the harmful chemicals Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbon (MOSH). These chemicals from crude oil have been linked to serious illness including cancer, particularly in the liver and lymph nodes. This makes the sweets unsafe to eat, particularly over long periods of time, and not compliant with UK law. American multi-national firm Hershey has taken action to remove them from the UK market. But other the sweets are still on some shelves as other businesses continue to import them to the UK. The alert urges these businesses to stop importing and selling the sweets to consumers, and tells customers not to buy or eat them.

Firefighters work through the night at Co-op fire in Tavistock
Firefighters worked through the night to tackle a fire at a shop in fire service said nine crews attended the blaze in the Co-op store on Market Street when a fire alarm alerted them shortly after 19:00 BST on said they found the fire at the back of the shop which was filling the premises with took firefighters wearing breathing apparatus until 05:00 Thursday to clear. A spokesperson for the fire service said the store would be closed for some time due to the amount of damage from the fire which was believed had been started by an electrical spokesperson said the incident served as a reminder of the importance of a working fire alarm.
