Dodgers Reportedly ‘Lurking' on $56 Million Cy Young Ace

Yahooa day ago

Dodgers Reportedly 'Lurking' on $56 Million Cy Young Ace originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Despite being in first place for most of the 2025 season, the Los Angeles Dodgers appear to have inefficiencies. Their starting pitching, decimated by injuries, ranks in the bottom half of baseball when it comes to innings and ERA.

Although there have been positive reports about Cy Young award winner Blake Snell and All-Star Tyler Glasnow's recoveries, there is no set timetable for their return. Even Shohei Ohtani is not expected to pitch until after the All-Star break.
With their rotation compromised and the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres hot on their tail, Los Angeles is primed to be an aggressive shopper at the MLB trade deadline.
One of the top arms expected to be available is Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. Despite a rough start, 8.47 ERA in his first 11 starts, the former Cy Young award winner is rounding into form at the right time. His fastball velocity is reaching above 97 mph again, and the command of his off-pitching is returning. Over his last two starts, Alcantara is touting a 1.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts across 12 innings of work.
The re-establishment of Alcantara atop the trade market is an interesting development, and the reigning World Series champions are one of the team's 'lurking,' according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nightengale believes the Dodgers and their fourth-ranked farm system, according to MLB.com, are one of the best teams positioned to make a run at Alcantara. With six top-100 prospects and the pressing need for reliable starters, Los Angeles could very well be the most aggressive team in the Alcantara sweepstakes.

Alcantara is currently in the third year of a five-year, $56 million contract signed through the 2026 season with a club option for 2027. According to Spotrac.com, the Dodgers would be responsible for an approximate total of $46.5 million over the next three seasons should they choose to exercise his option.
Alcantara may never consistently regain his Cy Young form, and his last two starts could be outliers. But the Dodgers need another reliable starting pitcher who can toe the rubber every fifth day, and on his best day, Alcantara fits the bill better than anyone.

John Schneider Upsets Blue Jays Fans With Message After Phillies Loss

John Schneider Upsets Blue Jays Fans With Message After Phillies Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis (2-8, 6.05 ERA) was having a rough season before Saturday's bout with the Philadelphia Phillies, but he appeared to be on track after tossing a scoreless three innings to open the contest. What followed is what sports fans call a "meltdown." Advertisement With the Blue Jays up 1-0, Francis retired Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm before walking Nick Castellanos and Max Kepler. Then, the 29-year-old hit J.T. Realmuto with a pitch, walked Bryson Stott to bring in a run, and hit Otto Kemp to bring in another run. Toronto manager John Schneider had seen enough after that. The Blue Jays' bullpen allowed just one run the rest of the contest, but that was enough for the Phillies to beat them 3-2. Schneider defended Francis postgame, via Keegan Matheson. Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Bowden Francis (44)© Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images 'Yeah. I think we need him [to stay at the big-league level]," he said. "He's working his [expletive] off with [pitching coach] Pete [Walker]. I think he's going to take what he did before the walks in the fourth inning and build off of it.' Advertisement Francis pitched six games for Triple-A Buffalo last season, but has made all 14 of his starts in the big leagues this year. Toronto fans on social media aren't pleased. "He's going to get another start!? Come on," one said. "He's killing the bullpen, and that hurts the team big time." "Yep, let's just give away a game every five days, that also taxes the bullpen," another said. "Did this team not learn from 2021? These games matter." "John Schneider is half of this team's problem," another said. "Unserious ball club if Bowden Francis makes another major league start before the All-Star break," another said. Blue Jays Make Unfortunate Announcement Before Cardinals Game

Blue Jays Make Unfortunate Announcement Before Cardinals Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Toronto Blue Jays are playing their best baseball of the season. They're not only 8-2 in their last 10 games, but they're tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for second place in the AL East. Advertisement Toronto's been clutch recently, as four of its last five wins were by two runs or less. Its latest close victory was on Monday, when it beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 in 10 innings on the road. The Blue Jays could move into sole possession of second place with another win over the Cardinals on Tuesday, but they'll have to do it shorthanded, via their social media. Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Nathan Lukes (38)© Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images "UPDATE: OF Nathan Lukes was removed from tonight's starting lineup with neck discomfort," they announced. Alan Roden, Myles Straw, and Jonatan Clase will man the outfield from right to left and will hit in the bottom three spots of the order, respectively. Straw replaced Lukes in the lineup. Lukes is slashing .267/.360/.392 with four homers and 21 RBI through 49 games this season after playing just 51 combined contests in his first two campaigns. The 30-year-old owns a career slash line of .270/.355/.401 with five homers and 33 RBI over 100 games. Advertisement Right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt (6-3, 3.56 ERA) will start on Tuesday for Toronto, while fellow right-hander Miles Mikolas (4-2, 3.96 ERA) will start for St. Louis. The Blue Jays will continue their road trip vs. the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday before hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox. After that, they'll hit the road again to face the Cleveland Guardians and Boston Red Sox. Related: Phillies' Rob Thomson Announces J.T.
