New loans to help Latino-owned businesses off the ground
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Kent County has approved a $1.2 million grant to help provide loans to Latino entrepreneurs.
'It's a turning point for our Latino businesses,' Melissa Boughner, the president of the , said.
The Hispanic Center made the announcement at its headquarters Thursday morning. The loans aim to give new and emerging Latino business owners a helping hand to grow and thrive.
'It is incredible to receive support from Kent County at this level,' Boughner said. 'It's quite the statement to say, 'We believe in the Latino community. We know the impact they have. We can't ignore it. We want them to continue to be a prosperous part of our community.''
How local groups address needs of fast-growing Hispanic population
The goal is to help entrepreneurs who don't qualify for traditional loans at the bank, whether it's because of their financial history or because of language barriers.
Starting Monday, those interested can call the Hispanic Center and be screened for the loan that best fits their needs. The loans range from $1,000 to $250,000.
The Hispanic Center is teaming up with two community development financial institutions, known as CDFIs, that support undeserved communities.
'It's really to get you to that next level to be bankable,' said Alexis Hill, a loan officer for Opportunity Resource Fund, a CDFI part of the program. 'So you can get that generational wealth and grow your business. A lot of these businesses can be stunted just because they can't have access to capital.'

It's not just the money. Business owners can also get marketing, literacy and technical help that's in Spanish.
As West Michigan's Latino population continues to grow, the Hispanic Center hopes these efforts will create more opportunities for the community to build lasting wealth and stability.
'In the midst of everything happening in our nation, this is good news for our Latino community and for us at the center,' Boughner said.
More information is available on the Hispanic Center's website. While only Kent County residents are eligible for this program, Boughner said the Hispanic Center plans to launch other initiatives soon to help Latinos across West Michigan, including on the lakeshore.

The European Commission has imposed fines totalling €329m ($375m) on Germany-based Delivery Hero and Spanish company Glovo for engaging in anti-competitive practices within the European Economic Area (EEA). The decision marks the first instance of the commission penalising a cartel in the labour market. The fines reflect misuse of a minority shareholding to facilitate anti-competitive coordination. Delivery Hero and Glovo, Europe's two leading food delivery companies, are known for delivering restaurant-prepared meals, groceries and retail products. Both were found to have violated antitrust laws over a four-year period. In July 2024, the EU Commission began an investigation into the two companies for potential antitrust violations. The commission's investigation revealed that Delivery Hero and Glovo had agreements in place to avoid poaching each other's employees, to exchange commercially sensitive information, and to divide geographic markets between themselves. This collusion reduced consumer choice, limited employment opportunities and stifled the incentive to compete and innovate. Both companies admitted their involvement and agreed to settle, with Delivery Hero fined €223.285m and Glovo €105.732m. The fines were calculated based on the commission's 2006 guidelines on fines, taking into account the cartel's nature, geographic scope, duration and evolution. From July 2018, when Delivery Hero acquired a minority stake in Glovo, until July 2022 when it took sole control, the companies' competitive constraints were progressively eliminated. They entered into a non-poaching agreement, shared sensitive information and allocated markets to avoid competition, facilitated by Delivery Hero's stake in Glovo. The fines reflect the seriousness of the infringement, with a standard 10% reduction applied due to the companies' admission of liability, in accordance with the Commission's 2008 Settlement Notice. Need help paying rent? Financial assistance waitlist opens up soon in Miami-Dade
Miami-Dade County residents who need help paying their rent have the opportunity to apply for housing assistance in apartments located in buildings participating in the Project-Based Voucher program, which makes certain rental units affordable for low-income tenants. Applications to join the waitlist for the Project-Based Voucher program will be accepted online only starting Monday, June 9 on the county's website. Applications are available in English, Spanish and Creole. Under the program, tenants pay 30% of their adjusted monthly income, plus applicable utilities, during their participation. Although rental prices have adjusted in Miami-Dade County and there is more rental inventory, the average rental cost stands at $2,719 per month, according to the most recent report from the RentCafe website. Differences between the Project-Based Voucher program and Section 8 The Project-Based Voucher program is tied to the apartment, and when the tenant moves out, they don't take it with them, but rather make room for another person in need. Section 8, on the other hand, is granted to the individual, who can transfer it when moving to another project in the private market that accepts that type of subsidized housing plan. The waiting list for the Project-Based Voucher program focuses on buildings or developments with multi-room apartments, many of which serve residents with tenant vouchers (Section 8) and people requiring supportive services, seniors, people with disabilities and formerly homeless residents. Some of those buildings are located in Little Havana, downtown Miami, North Miami, Miami Gardens, Opa-locka and South Miami, to name a few neighborhoods in the county that have apartments dedicated to the housing assistance plan. The need for affordable housing has become a crisis since the rise in rents during COVID-19, leading thousands of Miami-Dade residents to sign up for the Section 8 waitlist. In 2021, more than 90,000 people signed up, and in 2024, when the list reopened, 70,000 people applied on the first day alone to join a waitlist that had space for 5,000. How to apply for the housing voucher program Applications can be completed online from Monday, June 9 at 8 a.m. to Friday, June 20, at 11:59 p.m. Those without computer access can complete their application at the public libraries that offer this service: the Main Library in downtown, 101 W. Flagler St., Miami North Dade Regional Library, 2455 NW 183rd St., Miami GardensWestchester Regional Library, 9445 Coral Way, MiamiMiami Beach Regional Library, 227 22nd Library, 14850 SW 280th St., Homesteadand at various Community Resource Centers throughout the county. One application per household is allowed. Once you have provided all the information on your application, you will receive a confirmation number to acknowledge successful submission. Those selected will receive notification from the Miami-Dade County Housing and Community Development Department by email or to the address provided when completing the application. Priority is given to those on the 2024 waiting list, including homeless individuals, veterans, vulnerable populations, households with special needs, and individuals with mobility, hearing or vision impairments. Income limit for housing assistance Individuals 18 and older are eligible to apply for the Project-Based Voucher program waiting lists.
