BG cotton seed prices up but discounts likely due to abundant supply

Nagpur: Though rates of
BG cotton seeds
have gone up to Rs901 per packet, a hike of Rs35 compared to last year, they are expected to be still available at a discount this
kharif season
due to abundant availability.
BG cotton is genetically modified variety resistant to pink bollworm, a major pest that attacks the crop. The rates are fixed by govt, and there have been years when a hike was implemented.
Cotton, due to its variations in price and output, is linked to agrarian crisis in the region. Any change in the prices makes a difference to the farmers from Vidarbha, as western districts of the region form one of the prominent cotton-growing belts of the country.
Traders, including members of Nagpur Agro Dealers Association, told TOI that supply is abundant because of a favourable season throughout the cotton-growing parts of the country. "Seed companies produce the seeds in farm blocks belonging to private growers. Good weather ensured enough output," said a trader in Nagpur, adding due to excessive supply, traders may woo farmers with discount.
However, traders also accept that grey market of herbicide-tolerant (HT) seeds eats away their business. BG cotton seeds are only resistant to bollworm. HT seeds are also resistant to weed killer, which saves labour costs. Though not approved for commercial use, farmers prefer to buy HT seeds illegally, said traders. The matter has been raised with authorities from time to time, they say.

Income tax raids Wazirabad tehsil office, property deals for six years under scanner

Gurgaon: A 12-member team of the income tax department on Friday carried out a search and survey of the Wazirabad tehsil office, which handles registries and other records of some of the costliest property transactions in the city, and across the country. Officials told TOI that high-value property transactions, some amounting up to multi-million rupees, from the last six years are under scrutiny. The Wazirabad office is the largest revenue earner in Haryana and logs annual property registries up to Rs 25,000-30,000 crore. Areas such as Golf Course Road in Gurgaon fall under its jurisdiction. Accompanied by a police team, the I-T department started the survey early on Friday morning and asked the registrar to provide access to documents. Officials went through the records for the next 13 hours. An I-T department official said the tehsil office was not providing full and accurate information related to property transactions, causing financial losses to the department, which could not levy the mandated taxes. During registrations, PAN numbers of those involved in transactions were not properly filled, preventing the department from collecting taxes from buyers and sellers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "The income tax department was not receiving accurate information. Information about registrations in the tehsil was superficial, and even when details were sent, PAN numbers were not available," the official, who was involved in Friday's survey, said. According to norms, tehsildars have to share details of registries above Rs 30 lakh with the I-T department. The district revenue department has to share details like the name, PAN card and Aadhaar card details of buyers and sellers too. "The disruption in sharing proper information by the revenue department about land transactions hampers our work," the I-T official said. Officials told TOI the search and survey was carried out on the direction of the I-T department's intelligence and criminal investigation wing in Chandigarh. The Wazirabad office came under the wing's scanner after coming across a case of a builder who had registered a farmhouse for Rs 200 crore there. Other than the Wazirabad office, other tehsils in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Palwal are under scrutiny too, they added. Asked about I-T department's action, deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar said on Friday that the govt agency is doing its job and the revenue department is providing all support required. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The victim, who runs a business, lodged a complaint with the Pune Cyber police on Thursday. An officer from the Pune Cyber police told TOI that, according to the complainant, in February this year, he was added to a group of investors on a mobile messaging app by an unknown person. One person was providing training on investments in the share market in that group. "The complainant told us that in April this year, the trainer messaged him and informed him that he could earn a good amount of money if he invested in shares through their trading app. The message also stated that the victim could get IPOs easily if he purchased through their app," the officer said. He said that on April 23, the complainant withdrew Rs 1 lakh, which was also credited to his bank account. When he tried to withdraw Rs 65 lakh more, he was not allowed. He was told to pay Rs 15.58 lakh for the tax. After that, he was asked to pay Rs 17 lakh under the pretext of profit-sharing fees. After the payment, the crooks told him to pay the same amount again as the complainant transferred it to his trading app by mistake. Following this, the complainant transferred the same amount. They took Rs 9 lakh more from him under the pretext of profit-sharing fees again. "After that, the complainant was told to withdraw his money. When he tried to withdraw Rs 90 lakh on May 16, the crooks closed his trading app and stopped responding to his calls. He realised that he was duped and approached us," the officer said.

Construction workers to get Rs12,000 annual pension as labour department submits SOP

1 2 3 Pune: Construction workers registered with the Maharashtra Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board will soon receive pension as the labour department has submitted a proposal to govt suggesting a standard operating procedure. "A govt resolution was issued in March. The scheme will be rolled out after the SOP for its implementation is approved by govt," an official said. Officials said that those aged 60 and above are likely to get Rs12,000 annually, which will mark a significant step toward social security. "The labour department has clarified that the pension scheme will be implemented entirely through the board without any additional financial burden on state govt. The money will be sanctioned from the board's resources," another official said. Currently, there are 37 lakh registered workers in the state while another 16 lakh are yet to renew their registrations. The labour department is yet to determine the number of registered workers who have turned 60. The GR outlines the eligibility criteria and application procedures to access pension. If husband and wife are registered workers, they will be entitled to separate pension benefits. The scheme also provides for continuation of pension to surviving spouses after a construction worker's death, though it clarifies that double benefits will not be allowed if a spouse is already receiving pension. However, workers getting benefits under the Employees State Insurance Act, 1948, and the Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provision Act, 1952, will not be eligible for this scheme, as per Central govt guidelines. Once approved by the secretary and chief executive officer at board level, successful applicants will be given a "pension number certificate", with the date of issuance considered as the official pension commencement date. The entire process will be managed through the integrated welfare board computer system, which will ensure transparent and efficient disbursement. The SOP requires annual proof of existence from pensioners to ensure continued credits to their accounts, with provisions made for bank account changes and heir registration in case of a pensioner's death. For workers on the ground, this development brings hope. "The scheme is important to us. Even if the amount is less, at least there is some security," said Babu Kedkar, a registered board member. Meerabai, whose husband died in a construction site accident, has been diligently renewing her board membership and is hoping that the pension comes through. Her only son works at a private firm as a security guard. "I am 50 now; I only hope the govt gives the pension," she told TOI. Those between 18 and 60 years and who have worked for at least 90 days in the previous year can register with the board, with annual renewal mandatory. However, workers above 60 are currently not eligible for renewal, which has left them without access to board benefits until this pension scheme's implementation.
