Wolves players ‘absolutely devastated' club never applied for promotion

The Guardian28-04-2025

The Wolves women's players have said they feel let down by a lack of ambition from their club after learning an application for promotion to the Women's Championship was not submitted, despite the team battling Nottingham Forest for top spot all season.
Wolves finished second in the northern section of the third tier in English women's football – the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division – on Sunday, three points behind Forest, who clinched promotion on the final day to go up to the second tier. Only one team could be promoted.
Wolves have met all the criteria to play second-tier football but it has emerged the club did not apply, and the players were informed of this during a team meeting on Sunday after full-time in their 6-0 home victory against Liverpool Feds, their final game of the season.
Wolves did not wish to comment on the matter when contacted on Monday by the Guardian with a series of questions.
Beth Merrick described the situation as 'crazy', before the midfielder said: 'Imagine fighting for promotion all season, to find out our Championship bid was never submitted. As a group we are absolutely devastated to finish the season this way and believe it speaks volumes about the club's ambitions for the women's team. For our staff to have to deliver this news to us moments after is astonishing.
'Our players, staff and fans deserve so much better. The staff have put in hours of dedication, for a bid to never be submitted. It's not about money, it's about honesty and transparency.'
Any third-tier clubs interested in applying for a second-tier licence, to be ready for promotion subject to their final league position, initially had until 20 December 2024 to express their intent to apply, before the formal deadline to submit a second-tier application, which was on 21 February.
The list of criteria included a requirement to provide evidence a club could attract average home attendances of at least 600 spectators, while also requiring clubs to commit to appointing the following staff within one month of next season starting: a head of women's football, marketing manager, head coach, assistant coach, physiotherapist or sports therapist, doctor, a strength and conditioning coach, a goalkeeping coach and several people in specific safeguarding and player-welfare roles, as well as a matchday safety manager.
It is also understood that the company running the Women's Championship, Women's Professional Leagues Limited, has proposed to raise the minimum contact hours per week for players up to 20 hours per week, although this proposal remains subject to receiving final shareholder approval.

It is understood there was a shocked reaction in the dressing room on Sunday night among staff and players, many of whom are considering their futures at the club.
Abbi Jenner, the defender who is on a season-long loan at Wolves from the Women's Championship side Birmingham City, wrote on X that the situation was 'absolutely gutting', accompanied by a broken heart emoji. The midfielder Lily Simkin wrote: 'We feel let down … We took it to the last day to find out it would have all been for nothing anyway. We deserve better.'

Dave O'Brien, who pored over match footage, referee reports and extensive game insights to reveal all the most dramatic diving data, said: 'Diving has always been a part of the game, but when you look at the numbers, like I've done for Snickers' Deep Diving Audit, it's clear that some clubs and players really know how to keep things interesting. read more in football FRANK DISCUSSION Tottenham AGREE deal to make Thomas Frank new manager after Ange axe 'Whether it's tactical, instinctive, or maybe even hunger-related, one thing is for sure, when players are off their game, it shows. 'And sometimes, it's not just the ball that goes rolling.' Nearly all cases of diving occurred in the second half, with a particular uptick during the 90th minute – and 70 per cent of dives took place in the penalty area. With Brighton & Hove Albion being named as the club players have dived against most in the Premier League. Strikers are responsible for 26 per cent of all dives over the last three seasons, whereas in defence, only one centre-back was carded for a diving offence. No big deal, right? Sadly for Steve Clarke and this Scotland squad, after Friday's horror show at Hampden, they've made this game have a much greater importance than it should. Despite mixing it with the big boys in the Nations League recently, it does seem strange that we can only attract friendlies against the likes of Iceland and tonight's opponents, Liechtenstein. But what was probably seen as a couple of friendlies to get morale back up after the disaster against Greece last time out, suddenly has led to questions over some of the squad and - in particular - Clarke himself. His goalkeeping crisis hasn't helped and he'll need to find someone to play there later after Cieran Slicker's shocker off the bench on Friday in the 3-1 defeat. Scott McTominay and Kieran Tierney have also pulled out the squad ahead of tonight's game, citing injuries. Clarke's decision to remain loyal with some players - particularly those who can't get a game with English League One sides - has been a thorn in his side this last year or so, where only three wins have been picked up in 13 games. Scotland are short odds to win tonight, naturally. And they'll need to make sure that's shown on the park. Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham pursuing £80K-a-week star who used to earn £400 in Prem

Wrexham, backed by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are said to be trying to secure the services of a current Premier League defender this summer Wrexham's pursuit of Ben Davies is still alive despite Tottenham exercising the option to extend the defender's contract, according to reports. The Wales international's deal was due to expire at the end of this month, meaning the 32-year-old would've been allowed to leave for free on July 1. However, Spurs have now chosen to add an extra 12 months on to his contract. Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have been heavily linked with a move for Davies following their promotion to the Championship in April. ‌ On the face of it, the decision represents a blow to the Welsh club's chances of signing him during the summer transfer window. But The Mail reports that Davies could still be allowed to leave over the next few months, subject to a reasonable fee being agreed. ‌ It's claimed that Tottenham's readiness to let him go could also depend on whether they are successful in their bid to land Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Davies is currently Spurs' longest-serving player, having joined from Swansea City in 2014. Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is expected to be busy in the transfer window as he looks to strengthen his squad following his team's third successive promotion. Able to cover both the left-back and centre-back positions, Davies would provide versatility and a significant amount of experience for the Red Dragons. He has featured in 358 matches across all competitions for Spurs, netting nine goals and captaining the side on 13 occasions. The defender is closing in on 100 senior appearances for Wales at international level, having represented his country at Euro 2016, Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. Davies has come a long way in his career since his early days with Swansea, where he earned just £400 per week after signing his first professional contract in 2011. He opened up about the modest wages he then earned while appearing on ESPN's Gab and Juls Show last year. "It was £400 a week for playing in the Premier League. The Sun did a bit on their Goals pull-out — the front page of it. There was a picture of me with City's Yaya Toure and our salaries — £400 a week against £240,000 a week. ‌ "I was getting messages on Twitter from plumbers saying 'come and work for me for a week'. But looking back it was probably a good thing." Davies is now said to earn around £80,000 per week at Spurs, having never played below the Premier League during his career to date. He featured 28 times under Ange Postecoglou in their most recent campaign and is understood to be a popular member of the squad. ‌ While Wrexham will be hoping to pull of a coup by securing his services, fellow Welshman Tony Pulis has urged Davies not to make the switch to North Wales. The former Stoke City manager said he should focus on playing at the top level for as long as possible. Pulis told BoyleSports: "To Ben Davies, I'd say that you should stay as high as you could for as long as you can. He's played quite regularly at Spurs this year and he's still in the national team and doing exceptionally well for them. "I think Craig Bellamy relies on him quite a bit as well with his experience. So I wouldn't be in too much of a rush to jump out of the Premier League at the moment. "Maybe one day, but not this year, I'd be very, very keen if I was him to have another year at least in the Premier League."
