Liverpool boss Arne Slot addresses serious incident after winning another trophy
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been named the League Managers Association's manager of the year after leading his side to the Premier League title, but he was not there to accept the trophy
Arne Slot has paid tributes to the emergency services who attended to those injured by the terrifying incident during Liverpool's Premier League trophy parade. Police said around 65 people were injured after a car ploughed into pedestrians in the city centre on Monday.
A 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and dangerous driving offences. The incident on Water Street overshadowed Liverpool's celebrations and prompted the club to postpone further events on Tuesday for staff.
Liverpool issued a statement on Tuesday which mentioned the "unimaginable scenes of distress" that "this appalling incident" caused. And Slot decided not to attend the League Managers Association's annual awards dinner on Tuesday evening in London as a result.
The Dutchman sent a letter to the LMA apologising for his absence, which meant he was unable to accept the LMA Manager of the Year award in person, having secured the Premier League title in his debut campaign with the Reds.
He wrote: 'As you will know, a shocking incident took place in Liverpool yesterday, one that left dozens of men, women and children who had attended our parade injured and as a result I have had to withdraw from the event out of solidarity with all affected.
'This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but it is one that I feel is absolutely right given the seriousness of the situation. I hope that I have your understanding in this regard.
'I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wider football community, including the LMA itself, the Premier League and many clubs who will be represented tonight, for the support we have received over the last 24 hours. Football is and always should be a game built on rivalry, but it is also a great source of comradeship, especially at times like this.
'If you would indulge me, I would also like to pay tribute to the emergency services and other authorities in Liverpool who swung into action as soon as the incident happened.
"Along with the supporters and bystanders who helped one another in an hour of need, I think everyone involved in the aftermath deserves the gratitude of all of us.'
Slot was disappointed not to be able to accept the award, which is voted for by his managerial peers, from legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Slot added: 'Sir Alex, I look forward to meeting with you at a later date to receive my trophy from you. I also look forward to attending my first LMA Annual Awards dinner on a future occasion.
"Thank you once again for your understanding and support. Enjoy your evening and if you could join me in keeping those affected by yesterday's events in your thoughts and prayers it would be very much appreciated.'

Tottenham 'axe three of Ange Postecoglou's backroom staff' as they step up search for his successor
Three members of Ange Postecoglou 's backroom staff are set to follow him out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer. Spurs confirmed on Friday afternoon that Postecoglou would not be returning for a third season, with the 59-year-old sacked just 16 days after overseeing a famous victory against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final. That win ended Tottenham's 17-year wait for a major trophy and secured a place in the next edition of the Champions League. But it was not enough to save Postecoglou, who also oversaw a 17th place finish in the Premier League — the club's lowest ever. Postecoglou's departure was communicated by the club via a 368-word statement. That statement did not mention whether or not any other staff members were also leaving. But according to The Telegraph, Spurs chiefs have decided to axe Postecoglou's assistant coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo. Meanwhile, Ryan Mason — who also worked as an assistant coach under Postecoglou — left Spurs earlier in the week to take the vacant manager's job at West Bromwich Albion. Senior coach Matt Wells and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch are said to have remained with Spurs for now, although that could change after Postecoglou's replacement is announced. That replacement is likely to be current Brentford boss Thomas Frank but he is not the only man in the frame. Brentford do not want to lose Frank and will demand significant compensation, believed to be in the region of £10million, if he leaves for Spurs. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is expected to step up his search for a new manager in the coming days, with Marco Silva and Scott Parker also in the frame.

BREAKING NEWS Thomas Tuchel considering handing Jordan Henderson shock England start over Declan Rice for World Cup qualifier against Andorra
England manager Thomas Tuchel has been considering a surprise start for Jordan Henderson against Andorra in Barcelona this afternoon. If the 34-year-old does begin the game it will be his 84th England cap and his first start for his country since November 2023. Tuchel has talked at length about recalling Henderson from the international wilderness on the back of his leadership qualities off the field. But it would still be a big call to choose the former Liverpool captain – now at Ajax – ahead of Arsenal 's Declan Rice in a World Cup qualifier against the nation ranked 173rd in the world. Elsewhere, Liverpool's Curtis Jones may start at right back with Reece James of Chelsea on the left. Newcastle's Dan Burn is expected to partner Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa in the centre of the England defence. It was revealed earlier today that Bukayo Saka has been left out of the squad while Conor Gallagher will also be absent. Speaking on Friday, Tuchel revealed that Saka had only trained once with his team-mates ahead of the game, with the omission understood to be linked to his fitness. Saka is yet to feature for his country since Tuchel assumed his position as Gareth Southgate 's successor at St George's Park in January. The 23-year-old was unavailable for selection for Tuchel's first games in charge of England back in March, as he continued his recovery from a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has returned home after picking up a minor injury this week.

Jadon Sancho's stance on playing for Man Utd again after Chelsea's £5m decision
Jadon Sancho is facing an uncertain future in the summer transfer window after Chelsea's decision not to sign him permanently forced Manchester United to confront their previous mistakes Manchester United have been handed a serious problem after Chelsea refused to sign Jadon Sancho permanently, because he has no intention of ever playing for the club again. Sancho had appeared set to join the Blues permanently after spending the season on loan in west London, only for negotiations to break down. Chelsea ultimately decided they would rather pay United a £5million fee than go through with signing the winger for £25m. Sancho is paid around £300,000 per week by United and he and Chelsea had been unable to find a compromise on his wages, forcing a rethink for all parties. United are desperate to sell off their unwanted players in the summer transfer window, in order to help fund a rebuild under Ruben Amorim. Sancho had appeared to be the most straightforward deal, with Chelsea lumbered with an obligation to buy the 25-year-old, only for the move to break down. He has now joined the list of other unwanted players United must find buyers for, which also includes fellow loanees Marcus Rashford and Antony, and wantaway winger Alejandro Garnacho. Keeping Sancho for the 2025/26 campaign under Amorim is not a viable option, with ESPN reporting that he has no intention of pulling the United shirt on again. His stance matches that of Amorim, who doesn't want him in his squad when the next season begins. Sancho returned five goals and 10 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, helping them win the Conference League – a solid if unspectacular effort which won't help their efforts to sell him. The report states that there is tentative interest from West Ham, although Sancho's wages will be problematic. He has another year left on his contract with United, who are reluctant to buy out the winger in order to grease the wheels of his exit. Sancho has been a flop of significant proportions since signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73m. He has just 12 goals and six assists in 83 games for United over four years and has not come close to matching the potential shown at Dortmund. HAVE YOUR SAY! What does the future hold for Jadon Sancho? Comment below. He was absolutely electric in Germany, where he managed 40 goals and 47 assists in 118 appearances for Dortmund, but has struggled to replicate that form in England. A potential move back to the Bundesliga was potentially on the cards with Bayer Leverkusen, until the club hired Erik ten Hag as manager to shut that door. Ten Hag fell out with Sancho over his apparent lack of effort in training at Carrington and it was the Dutchman who prompted his loan move back to Dortmund in January 2024.
