PETALING JAYA : Penang police have busted a loan shark syndicate based in the state, having arrested four local men who are believed to be running unlicensed money lending schemes.
State police chief Hamzah Ahmad said the syndicate is also suspected of splashing red paint on several houses.
He said the four suspects, aged between 34 and 42, were arrested yesterday.
Hamzah said police also seized several items, including a Toyota Vios, five mobile phones, a can of red paint, a bag of paint thinner, and several notes with threatening messages written on them.
He said interrogation of the suspects found they were behind 33 paint-splashing incidents across Penang, Perak and Kedah.
'Inspection of the seized phones also found 33 addresses of houses splashed with red paint, believed to have been committed by the suspects.
'The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code (for mischief) and the suspects can be jailed between one and five years, fined or both, if convicted,' he said.

BANGI, June 12 — The investigation report on the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds meant for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley is expected to be completed within the next one to two months, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the probe is progressing well and statements have been recorded from 53 witnesses so far. Earlier, media reports stated that the MACC had seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash and high-end properties, collectively estimated at RM32 million, believed to belong to a highway concessionaire bearing the 'Tan Sri' title. In a separate case, Azam clarified that the statement from renowned fashion designer Datuk Jovian Mandagie was recorded yesterday in Jakarta, not Bali, as previously reported. It was earlier reported that the MACC investigation team would be in Jakarta for two days to record the statement of the 39-year-old designer, who is Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's former son-in-law, in connection with an investigation into asset ownership involving the former prime minister. Ismail Sabri had been called in multiple times to the MACC headquarters to assist in investigations related to corruption and money laundering involving expenditures and funding for the promotion and publicity of the 'Keluarga Malaysia' programme during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022. — Bernama

Yusoff Rawther freed of drug trafficking, fake pistols possession charges
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that the prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff Rawther had knowledge, custody, and control of the drugs and fake pistols. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Former research assistant Yusoff Rawther, who has been held in remand for nine months, walked out of court a free man today after the High Court acquitted him of drug trafficking and the possession of two imitation pistols. Justice Jamil Hussin said the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case on both charges as it was unable to prove all elements of the offences with credible evidence. 'The prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff had knowledge, custody and control of the drugs and fake pistols. 'The accused is acquitted and discharged without being called to enter his defence,' Jamil said after hearing oral submissions. Yusoff was accused of trafficking in 305g of cannabis found in his vehicle when it was parked in front of the Kuala Lumpur police surau at 10.15am on Sept 6, 2024. The drugs were allegedly wrapped in a black plastic bag. He was also charged with possessing fake pistols outside the Senada Condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am the same day. The fake firearms possession charge, under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, carried a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. The drug trafficking charge, framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provided for the death penalty or 30 years' imprisonment as well as a whipping of not less than 12 lashes. Yusoff's defence was that the drugs and pistols were planted to frame him. He was held at the Sungai Buloh prison as bail is not allowed for those charged with drug trafficking. Jamil, who is scheduled to retire in November, also said the two investigating officers failed to investigate Yusoff's claim, made to the recording officer during detention, that he was a victim of entrapment by a certain individual. 'The police officers had ample time to verify his statement but did not do so,' he said, adding that this had prejudiced the accused. Deputy public prosecutors Sabri Othman, Shahrizzat Amadan, and R Haravind appeared for the prosecution. Lawyers Rafique Rashid Ali, Gurdial Singh Nijar, Nurmustanir Nor, and Amirul Ar-Rashid Azman acted for Yusoff.

Teens killed in car-motorbike crash in Temerloh

(PDRM pic) PETALING JAYA : Two teenage girls were killed after the motorcycle they were on was hit by a car at a traffic light junction on Jalan Tengku Ismail in Temerloh, Pahang, last night. Temerloh police chief Mazlan Hassan said Nur Irdina Shaffiya Nazri and Aneez Irdiena Sofya Khairul Azman, both 18, died on the spot in the 11pm accident. Mazlan said an inspection of the car involved in the crash uncovered plastic packets suspected to contain methamphetamine and heroin, estimated to be worth over RM6,000. He said the 38-year-old driver from Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, had been detained for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking. 'Preliminary investigations found that the two were travelling in the direction of Mentakab towards the Bukit Angin roundabout. 'When they stopped at a red light, a Perodua Bezza allegedly rammed into the back of their motorcycle,' Bernama reported him as saying. Mazlan said their bodies were taken to Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh for a post-mortem.
