The Monastery of Simonos Petra clings almost impossibly to a sheer cliff above the Aegean Sea in northern Greece.
Also known as Simonopetra or Simon's Rock, the Christian Orthodox monastery transcends country-based branches of the faith by embracing monks from across the world, including converts from non-Orthodox nations.
The monastery is one of 20 in the autonomous all-male monastic community of Mount Athos, known in Greek as Agion Oros, or Holy Mountain. The peninsula is no stranger to foreigners. Of the 20 monasteries, one is Russian, one is Bulgarian and one is Serbian, and the presence of monks from other nations is not unusual.
But it is in Simonos Petra where the greatest range of nationalities lies.

Body found in search for stag party Scot missing in Portugal
A body has been found in the search for a Scottish man reported missing in Portugal. Greg Monks, 38, was reported missing last week after leaving the main strip in Albufeira in the Algarve in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Mr Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, had travelled to the resort on 27 May on a stag party with friends. The Portuguese national Policia Judiciaria said the body of a man was found in the Cerro de Aguia area on Wednesday morning. A Policia Judiciaria statement said the Mr Monks' disappearance was reported to the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) on 28 May. Cerro de Aguia is about 3.1 miles (5km) from the main Albufeira strip, where Mr Monks was last seen by friends in the early hours of the morning. The Polícia Judiciária said the body, which is yet to be formally identified, was found on a "vacant and very uneven lot". They said an autopsy would take place in due course.

While she gained primary custody of their kids, she notes that she still needs her ex's permission to bring them out of the country. Recently, the original poster (OP) shares that she was planning to travel abroad to visit family with her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. When she told her ex she wanted to go on the trip with their kids, she claims he said he always wanted to visit her family's country and was coincidentally planning to go at the same time as them. 'I was already anticipating this," she writes, "because following us is something he does EVERY time I take the kids on a trip." So she was ready with all the above-board documentation. "My lawyer drafted a document to be signed and notarized that I was being given permission to take our kids out of the country for the specific dates. She also included a clause that he has up until 72 hours prior to the day of travel to revoke his permission. He agreed.' The day of the trip, she arrived at the airport with her kids while her former spouse got there 'much later" only to find out upon trying to check in for the flight that his passport was revoked. While he was stunned by the news, the OP admits, she wasn't totally in the dark as to why that might have been the case. Another result of the divorce, she writes, was that he was ordered to pay child support, which she claims he has 'never done.' She explains that she signed up for enforcement so she doesn't have to 'badger' him about it, but he's still 'so far behind' that enforcement has 'suspended just about everything they can,' the OP writes. 'They send notices to him when this happens, but I'm sure he doesn't open them,' she claims. She later claims in an edit of the post that her ex can afford the payments, but chooses not to. 'Turns out his passport was revoked due to lack of [child support] payment. He was denied at check-in and there's no way he can get his passport reinstated without paying his arrears in full,' she writes. Once he figured out that he wouldn't be able to crash the vacation, she says, "He said that since he can't go, he no longer gives me permission to take [the kids]." In response to which, the OP "Reminded him that we are past the 72 hrs for him to deny my travel request.' 'I don't think I'm the a------ for continuing our trip; but I am questioning whether I'm an a------ for not giving him a heads up that he should check his passport. I didn't know it was revoked for sure, but I suspected,' she writes. In the comments, the majority of users jumped in to tell the mother she didn't do anything wrong. 'It is not your responsibility to keep track of his passport. He would have received official communication of some sort advising of the block on his passport. Disregarding his mail is 100% on him,' one user wrote. Another added, 'Ex needs to put on his big boy pants and read his mail. You aren't his mom,' followed by a different user who echoed, 'Oh darn, the consequences of his actions are catching up to him. You're not his secretary.' 'It's so unlike him': Sisters appeal for information after Scottish man Greg Monks goes missing on stag do
The family of a Scottish man who went missing on a stag do in Portugal have urged police to ramp up their efforts to find him. Greg Monks, 38, from Glasgow, was last seen in Albufeira in the early hours of Wednesday morning, on the first night of a five-day stag do. His parents and his girlfriend flew out to to help with the search the next day, but have not found any recent sightings of him. Speaking to , Mr Monks's sisters Jillian and Carlyn said they are "waiting for answers". "As a family, we're worried sick," Carlyn added. "It's just so unlike him, but myself and Jillian are just trying to hold each other up back home." Jillian then said: "He deserves to be found, he deserves to be looked for, we need him home. "He's a big part of our family, and it's just unimaginable if he's just lying somewhere and we can't find him." Carlyn also called her brother "a real family man", while Jillian said that "I know that if he could phone us or reach out to us, he would, he wouldn't put us through this". Jillian said that after his friends told her "he's not come home from the night before", they asked "if there was any way we could track his phone or try and see what his location is". "I just couldn't believe it," she added. "It's not like him, he wouldn't normally do anything like this. "It had only been 12 hours since he was seen, but we were just so worried." She and his friends then tried to report Mr Monks as missing, but she said "it wasn't really taken seriously at first because it hadn't been that long". Jillian added that when her family arrived in Albufeira, police told them they had spotted Mr Monks twice on CCTV footage walking around the residential area. The area where the 38-year-old was last seen had a lot of "rough terrain" - including rocky outcrops and cliffs - and was more than an hour's walk from the Albufeira Strip, where he was thought to have left his friends. Jillian then said that while the police are looking for Mr Monks, "they just don't have the manpower" to search the area fully, and "it's been difficult for them to get the information" they are looking for.
