US V-P JD Vance arrives in India, to hold talks with PM Modi amid US tariff war

Indian Express21-04-2025

US Vice-President J D Vance landed in Delhi Monday morning, along with his family, for a four-day visit, and is expected to discuss issues related to tariffs and the bilateral trade deal during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to sources, Vance is expected to press India on the issue of buying US defence equipment
Vance, who is travelling with his Indian-origin wife Usha Vance and three children, was received by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the Palam airport. PM Modi will host a dinner for the US vice-president later in the day.
'A very warm welcome to @VP JD Vance, @SLOTUS Mrs. Usha Vance, & the U.S. delegation to India! … The Official Visit (21–24 Apr) spanning Delhi, Jaipur & Agra is expected to further deepen the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,' Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), posted on X.
Vance, wife Usha, and their three children — Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel — landed at the Palam airbase.
The US vice-president and Second lady walked down the stairs of Air Force 2 at 9.50 am, holding hands and without their children. While Vance wore a blue suit and red tie, Usha Vance emerged in a long, sleeveless coral dress, and at some point soon after reaching the bottom of the steps, had draped a white blazer over her shoulders.
While Vance was accorded the ceremonial guard of honour, Usha Vance watched on. Their children emerged from the plane: the boys in kurtas and Mirabel in a lehenga. The family then went towards dancers, who were on a small platform, briefly watched them, and posed for some photos.
Vance did not stop to talk, but said, 'Hey guys, good morning,' as he walked by the US press pool. He picked up Mirabel, and the family continued walking out of sight.
According to sources, Vance is accompanied by senior officials, including those from the Pentagon and the State Department. National Security Council Senior Director Ricky Gill, who is a senior official from the White House, has also come.
Vance's first visit to India after assuming office as V-P comes in the backdrop of the sweeping tariff regime announced by US President Donald Trump, which has been paused for 90 days, against most countries, including India.
New Delhi and Washington are holding negotiations to seal a bilateral trade agreement that is expected to address a range of issues, including tariffs and market access.
Hours after arriving in Delhi, Vance and his family visited the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in the Capital.
Later in the evening, at 6.30 pm, Vance will meet PM Modi at the his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence for official talks. The focus of the meeting is likely to be on early finalisation of the proposed bilateral trade pact as well as ways to boost the overall trajectory of ties between the two countries, sources said.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra are expected to be part of the Indian team to be led by Modi, sources said.
Following the talks, Modi will host Vance, his family, and the accompanying US officials for dinner.
Later on Monday night, Vance and his family are scheduled to leave for Jaipur, where they are set to stay at the Rambagh Palace, a luxury hotel that once served as a royal guesthouse.
On Tuesday, they are likely to visit some historical sites, including the Amer Fort which is a Unesco world heritage site. In the afternoon, Vance is scheduled to address a gathering at the Rajasthan International Centre in Jaipur, sources said.
On Wednesday morning, the US vice-president and his family are expected to travel to Agra, where they will visit the Taj Mahal. They are also scheduled to go to Shilpgram, an open air emporium showcasing various Indian artefacts. They are expected to return to Jaipur the same evening.
Vance and his family will then leave for the US from Jaipur on Thursday, April 24.

Most corrupt I've seen: Finfluencer on Indian metro real estate market

India's metro real estate market is 'one of the most corrupt' spaces in the country, according to finfluencer and financial educator Akshat Shrivastava, who recently stirred debate online with a blunt critique of how property prices in big cities remain inflated by black money and speculative a widely shared LinkedIn post, Shrivastava claimed that just nine families control nearly 20% of Mumbai's real estate, wielding disproportionate power over pricing."Real estate in Indian metros is one of the most corrupt I have ever seen," he wrote, pointing to how untaxed money continues to fuel demand—not out of necessity, but to park wealth securely in physical assets. advertisement'Rich businessmen deal with black money the only option is to buy real estate or physical gold,' he explained. That capital, according to him, goes into properties that are often left vacant. 'These rich guys don't need to rent. They're cool with keeping properties vacant,' Shrivastava added. He explains that the result is a distorted market where home prices soar, rental yields shrink, and the average middle-class buyer is left chasing an increasingly unattainable dream. 'You don't need to own a house in a metro,' Shrivastava said, arguing that many end up buying at inflated rates for paltry rental returns—typically around 2–3%—while locking in long-term debt."Anyone telling you to buy a property in metros to get your 2-3% yield is a sales agent disguised as YouTuber,' he urged potential buyers to do the math before investing, especially in metros, and suggested buying homes only when rental yields exceed 4%. "Treat your house as lifestyle, not investment," Shrivastava wrote. "People lie, math does not."advertisement(This article is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice. Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir backs terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir

Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has backed terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that what India describes as terrorism is a 'legitimate struggle' and that Pakistan will continue providing political, diplomatic, and moral support to the Kashmiri people. Munir made the remarks at a passing out parade at the Pakistan Naval Academy on Saturday. (AFP/File) Munir made the remarks while addressing a passing out parade at the Pakistan Naval Academy on Saturday, when he also said that India has 'twice undertaken acts of unprovoked aggression against Pakistan' and the onus of any future escalation 'will squarely lie with the aggressor'. The speech was reminiscent of Munir's remarks at an Overseas Pakistanis Convention in Islamabad on April 16, less than a week before the Pahalgam terror attack, when he described Kashmir as the 'jugular vein' of Pakistan and said Islamabad will continue backing the struggle against 'Indian occupation'. There was no immediate response from Indian officials to Munir's latest remarks. Munir's previous remarks on Kashmir have been rubbished by the external affairs ministry. 'What India tends to term as terrorism is in fact the legitimate struggle as per the international conventions. Those who endeavoured to subdue the will of Kashmiri people and sought conflict elimination instead of resolution have made it more relevant and pronounced through their own actions,' Munir said while addressing the gathering in Karachi that included top military officers, civilian officials, and diplomats. 'We stand firm with the Kashmiri people for their right of self-determination for the resolution of the internationally recognised long-standing dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the people of Kashmir,' he added. Munir contended that 'regional peace will forever remain elusive' and there would be 'perpetual danger of conflict in South Asia' without the 'just and peaceful resolution' of the Kashmir issue. Paying tribute to those who are struggling for 'the right of self-determination', Munir said: 'Pakistan will always continue to provide political, diplomatic and moral support to the valiant people of…Jammu and Kashmir.' India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 to target terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. This triggered four days of intense clashes, with both sides using drones, missiles, and long-range weapons, before they reached an understanding to halt military actions on May 10. Munir claimed India's leadership had 'twice undertaken acts of unprovoked aggression against Pakistan' in recent years, under the 'pretext of counter terrorism'. He was referring to the clashes in May and the cross-border air strike carried out by India in response to the Pulwama suicide bombing in 2019 that killed 40 Indian troopers. At that time, both sides had briefly engaged in aerial battles and skirmishes. 'Pakistan, despite grave provocations, acted with restraint and maturity and demonstrated its commitment to regional peace and stability, which has led to Pakistan's role as net regional stabiliser,' Munir said. 'However, the assumption that Pakistan would have any constraints in the face of any future violation of its sovereignty reflects a dangerous misreading of strategic fundamentals…any enemy acting on perceived vulnerability of Pakistan under the illusion of strategic impunity or miscalculation would get an assured, swift and a very befitting response.'
