Can ChatGPT save your marriage?
Those who support the use of artificial intelligence as a marital counsellor believe that it offers a neutral, judgement-free space for couples to discuss their concerns and seek advice.
My friend, who has been married for over twenty years, was recently going through serious marital difficulties that made him consider divorcing his wife. However, when he attended marital therapy, he was not impressed by the advice given by the counsellors.
He then decided to explore ChatGPT for free advice. He informed ChatGPT about all the points that were bothering him about his wife's attitude towards him and asked for an opinion. In a few seconds, the application produced a detailed analysis of the wife's behaviours followed by a few suggestions on how to address them. My friend was so impressed with this outcome that he decided to appoint ChatGPT as his marital therapist.
All over the world, people of different age groups are using ChatGPT and other AI applications regularly, with some using it for marriage counselling. But can artificial intelligence truly help couples navigate the complexities of a relationship?

It's free and available 24/7, making it convenient for those who might not have access or cannot afford to pay a human therapist.
Moreover, AI can provide communication exercises, conflict resolution strategies, and even suggest ways to improve emotional intimacy that can help couples overcome their difficulties. Sometimes, couples feel uncomfortable discussing personal issues with a human, so an AI application can feel like a safe alternative.
On the other hand, those of us who are against the use of AI as a marital counsellor believe that it lacks the genuine empathy and emotional intelligence that a human therapist can provide. Human relationships are complex, and one would need to observe a person's body language, tone of voice, and cultural context to provide therapy, while an AI programme might miss all of these.
Additionally, the lack of professional credentials and the inability to handle deep-rooted issues or crises mean that AI should not replace a trained professional.
Another important fact is that marital norms, communication styles, and conflict resolution strategies vary widely across cultures, while AI programmes collect information from a vast pool of Internet-based databases that may not fully capture or respect these cultural norms. What works as advice in one cultural context might be inappropriate or ineffective in another.
When one relies on generalised data generated by AI, the advice provided is unlikely to align with a couple's specific cultural or social context. Also, having access to advice 24/7 is likely to make people dependent on AI to solve their problems instead of working on them.
In my opinion, while ChatGPT can offer supplemental support and practical tips, it is not yet equipped to provide marital therapy. The best approach likely involves a combination of human expertise and technological tools that are tailored to the specific needs of each couple, with careful consideration of cultural and social differences.

Pact to advance urban air mobility in Oman

According to the company, the high-capacity aircraft will enhance current ground-based public transport by enabling convenient point-to-point travel. With a focus on passenger volume and comfort, Shuttle aims to revolutionise urban and intercity mobility, introducing a new era of clean, efficient and scalable air transport. Through the partnership, LYNEports will assist in planning and simulating AeroVecto's Shuttle network, ensuring each site meets aviation-grade safety standards, operational viability and regulatory requirements. Furthermore, by leveraging LYNEports' AI-driven platform, AeroVecto can evaluate ideal locations, model flight routes and visualise integrated transport systems, accelerating the adoption of advanced air mobility across Oman. $1 bn Li-ion battery materials project proposed in Oman
Muscat, June 5 Chinese global battery materials manufacturer Hunan Zhongke Electric Co Ltd, a publicly traded company listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, has announced that it plans to set up a first-ever lithium-ion battery anode production facility in the Sultanate of Oman with an investment estimated at $1.1 billion (equivalent to around 8 billion yuan). The proposed investment will be made through its Hong Kong-based wholly-owned subsidiary, Zhongke Shinzoom (Hong Kong) Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of its holding subsidiary Hunan Zhongke Shinzoom Graphite Co, Ltd. The project centres on the development of an integrated base for the production of 200,000 metric tonnes of lithium-ion battery anode materials annually. The facility, tipped to be built at Sohar Port and Free Zone, will be constructed in two phases, each with a planned capacity of 100,000 mt per year, and the construction period for each phase is expected to be 36 months. Zhongke specialises in developing, manufacturing, and distributing graphite negative electrode materials for lithium batteries used in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and energy storage. The company also produces electromagnetic equipment and other products. Its products are supplied to leading manufacturers of auto batteries in China and globally. Zhongke aims to capitalise on the restructuring of the global lithium battery supply chain by leveraging its Oman project to expand into international markets, tap into emerging opportunities, and position itself as a leading global brand in lithium-ion battery anode materials. Together with investments flowing into polysilicon, solar PV and module, and even wind turbine projects in Suhar and Al Duqm, the latest investment in lithium battery materials will enhance Oman's positioning as a regional hub for goods destined for the burgeoning global clean energy industry.

AI agents will soon assist you in real life
Eid holidays are just a few days away. Some people and families are planning to travel, while others just plan to search and book local hotels and for some activities that they and their children could engage in around the city as a retreat. I know for a fact that I personally need a quick getaway plan immediately after Eid to refresh, re-energise, and prepare for the remaining engagements set for the next balance months (the second half of the year). The good news is that all this (search and booking) is now virtually possible today on the information superhighway (the internet). The bad news is that it would require one to research so as to spend a considerable amount of time in order to have an ideal plan created. For the executives or the likes, this may be an easy affair via their personal assistant. For the rest, it's a tedious manual activity that one cannot avoid, unfortunately. Wouldn't it be just awesome if there were a digital assistant or helper who could fulfil the service for you? Welcome to Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents. What are they and how do they work? is what I will focus on in my article today. First things first, let me clarify that AI agents are not chatbots or voice assistants (like Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, and Samsung's Bixby). AI agents are digital assistants/helpers that go beyond just responding to user inputs/prompts where they actually act proactively and not reactively to user/your requests per se. Simply, they understand what you want (as in your goals) and find out ways (as programmed via logic) on what to do to get you the ideal results (for your goals). The typical AI consumer apps that many use today (e.g., ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claudia, etc.) are based on LLMs (Large Language Models), yet AI agents are powered by LLMs. They are proactive (don't wait for you to ask things) but instead get things/tasks done for you. Examples include reading your emails, reviewing your calendar, scheduling meetings in advance, analysing and summarising reports, and/or making decisions on your behalf using a logic (programmed or taught to them). The sky is the limit on what these AI agents can do for you, and time will prove their worthiness (as you are witnessing today with ChatGPT and similar apps). How do these AI agents actually work? Quite simply, you set a goal, and it goes out to get it or them done for you. For example, referring to my wish at the beginning of the article today on a getaway travel plan, I would set a plan via the AI agent as 'Look for the best hotel deals in Indonesia under a specific budget X and closer to specific attraction X.' Obviously I will share the budget in mind and a few attractions I have heard of or been recommended. The AI agent would, in return, break down the query/input into smaller actions, surf the web, summarise if it found anything via the links generated, probably draft an email, communicate and negotiate with the hotel(s) and attraction(s) in question, reflect on the outcome received, and return with a recommendation (and sometimes even decide and take action for you, as you had programmed it/them to do). What more? These AI agents can also talk with other AI agents and support one another to get you the final result. Pretty cool? Yes, and trust me, it's not part of a science fiction movie but rather a reality in the making. AI agents are quite new and in the early stages of their full potential. Human intervention and/or supervision may still be required at times to ensure it works and is trained correctly. Nevertheless, like at the beginning of the consumer AI apps of the likes of ChatGPT and the rest, I expect AI agents to mature and become extremely useful in the coming year or so, where almost everyone (including myself) will have a digital helper at the office and/or at home, supporting 24/7 on every and any task, including Eid holiday getaways that I mentioned at the beginning of the article this week.
