Ohio BMV ticket text scam targets drivers state. See the texts, how to report scam messages

Yahooa day ago

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) has issued a warning about scammers using text messages to impersonate the agency. The messages, claiming to be from the BMV, threaten legal action while ordering recipients to pay fake outstanding traffic tickets in order to collect sensitive information.
BMV says it received multiple reports from Ohioans who received text messages instructing them to pay traffic tickets immediately to avoid a license suspension. The phishing or "smishing" attempt is part of a broader issue that's affecting people nationwide.
Here's how to protect yourself.
Ohioans have been receiving text messages with a fake "final notice" directing them to immediately pay an outstanding traffic ticket. Included in the text messages are suspicious links.
The message also lists deadlines and consequences for not paying by the dates, such as suspended driving privileges and vehicle registration. BMV warns that this is a scam and not from the agency.
"If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,' said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman in a statement. 'Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.'
Do not click any links and delete the text message. The BMV says that Ohioans can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov and advises you to contact your local law enforcement agency if you believe you have been a victim of a scam.
If you receive a text message from a DMV in Ohio or elsewhere demanding money, the Federal Trade Commission also suggests the following, per USA TODAY:
Do not respond to the text or click any links. State DMVs would not ask for your information or money by text.
If you think the message might be real, contact your state's DMV using a trusted phone number or website.
Copy the text message and forward it to 7726 (SPAM). This will help your wireless provider spot and block similar messages.
Report the text on the messaging app you use. Look for the option to report junk or spam.
Report the text to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov and/or file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
Text messages claiming to be from the Ohio BMV are likely to be scam texts. The Bureau states that it will never contact you via text to seek payment for tickets or other fees.

'Shocked' and 'sickened' Democrats react with fury to video of Padilla's removal

WASHINGTON (AP) — When videos first rocketed around the Internet Thursday afternoon showing security officers forcibly removing Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla from a press conference with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in California, senators in both parties were already gathered together for a long series of votes. There are strict rules against using cellphones on the Senate floor. But senators immediately shared the video with each other anyway. 'I showed it to as many people as I could,' said Democratic Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware. That included Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., who she said seemed 'as shocked as we were.' The videos, which showed officers aggressively pushing Padilla out of Noem's press conference and eventually restraining him on the floor outside the room, shook Senate Democrats to the core. Beaten down politically for months as President Donald Trump has returned to power and ruled Washington with a united Republican Congress, the Democrats' anger exploded as they skipped their traditional Thursday flights home and stayed on the floor to speak out against the incident, calling it the latest and most inflammatory example of what they say is Trump's gradual assault on democracy. The incident came just days after U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted on federal charges alleging she assaulted and interfered with immigration officers outside a detention center in New Jersey. 'What was really hard for me to see was that a member of this body was driven to his knees and made to kneel before authorities,' said New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, his raised voice booming through the Senate chamber walls. 'This is a test. This is a crossroads. This is a day in which the character of this body will be defined.' Washington Sen. Patty Murray said it was the closest she had come to tearing up on the floor in her 32 years in the Senate. Maryland Sen. Angela Alsobrooks said she was so angry she was shaking. Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine waved around a pocket Constitution and said the administration is trying to make Padilla and others 'afraid to exercise their rights.' Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said what he saw 'sickened my stomach' and demanded immediate answers 'to what the hell went on.' Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren called for an investigation. 'This is what a dictatorship looks like,' said Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen. 'We have to stand up." Pleading for Republicans to speak out against the incident, New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim said that 'this is not a time to put your finger up in the air and figure out which way the wind is blowing, to try to think through what type of reaction might come from the White House if we speak out against this.' Senate Republicans were mostly silent on the situation. Thune said that he would have a response, 'but I want to know the facts, find out exactly what happened.' Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she had seen a clip of the video on the Senate floor and it was 'disturbing,' though she said she didn't know the details of what came before it. 'It looks like he's being manhandled and physically removed, and it's hard to imagine a justification for that,' Collins said. Other Republicans were less sympathetic. Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, the No. 2 Republican, raised his voice when asked about the incident and said that Padilla should have been at work in Washington. He said he had not watched the video. 'Was he being disruptive?' asked South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who also had not seen the video. 'He got what he wanted, he's on video.' Padilla was forcibly removed from the press conference after introducing himself and saying he had questions for Secretary Noem amid immigration raids in his state that have led to protests. Video shows a Secret Service agent on Noem's security detail grabbing the California senator by his jacket and shoving him from the room as he yells, 'Hands off!' Later video shows Padilla on his knees and pushed to the ground with several officers on top of him. In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security said Padilla 'chose disrespectful political theater and interrupted a live news conference.' They defended the officers' conduct and claimed erroneously that Padilla did not identify himself and said Secret Service believed him to be an attacker. The Democrats described Padilla, the son of immigrants from Mexico, as a 'kind and gentle person' and said that disrespect is not a crime in the United States. They also invoked the end of Trump's last presidency, when a mob of his supporters attacked the Capitol and sent them running. 'I have never, ever — other than January 6 — been so outraged at the conduct of an administration,' said Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz.

'Uneducated jackal': Prosecutor Connie Pillich Facebook post about Trump gets backlash

In a now-deleted post on her personal Facebook page, Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich said she will attend an upcoming anti-Trump protest and referred to the president as 'an incompetent, childish, selfish, uneducated jackal.' Pillich, the first Democrat to be elected prosecutor in the county in nearly a century, made the post sometime on Tuesday, June 10. It was still visible the evening of June 11. She had deleted it by early the following day. Pillich began by responding to a Facebook prompt that users see. 'What's on my mind? My job is to prosecute people who commit crimes,' Pillich wrote. 'But all this is against a backdrop of such unconstitutional lawlessness at the federal level by an incompetent, childish, selfish, uneducated jackal who threatens our very democracy every day. 'Even worse, he is backed up by vile humans whose acts and advice indicate they want to destroy our democracy.' The post shared an event listing for one of the 'No Kings' protests scheduled for June 14, which are taking place nationwide. "Please join me Saturday," she wrote above a link to the University of Cincinnati protest. A spokeswoman for Pillich did not respond to a request for comment. Many, particularly supporters of President Donald Trump, responded with outrage or worse, devolving into name-calling. The Hamilton County Republican Party's Facebook page said Pillich's statement labeling Trump supporters as 'vile' disparaged the millions of fellow Ohioans who voted for him. 'This kind of rhetoric is not only divisive – it is dangerous,' the Republican party's post said. 'It undermines the foundation of democracy: respect for the will of the people, even when we disagree. And when it comes from someone in a position of public trust – especially a prosecutor sworn to uphold the law impartially – it raises serious ethical concerns.' Other users accused Pillich of not being impartial and even being driven by hatred. 'Are you publicly admitting that you'll shirk your responsibilities as a prosecutor to push a political agenda?' conservative radio personality and podcaster Jack Windsor wrote on Facebook. "To say your constituents should be disappointed is an understatement − they deserve better." University of Cincinnati professor David Niven, who studies American politics and follows local politics, said he believes Pillich was "sinking to the level of her political opponents." "Prosecutors are supposed to be above politics" and have a duty "to stand up for the rule of law," Niven said. "Pillich could stand up for every vulnerable resident of Hamilton County in carrying out her duties. But naming calling does not advance that agenda. While it is no doubt satisfying to speak frankly, Pillich would be better off acting on these observations than making them." (This story was updated to add a video and a photo gallery.) 'Manhandling' Of Sen. Alex Padilla By Federal Agents In LA Finds Trump Team Spinning Fiction As Justification

UPDATE, 1:05 PM: Outrage and spin are proving the partisan fallout of Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) being hauled out of Homeland Security Sec. Kristi Noem's press conference in LA today and handcuffed by federal agents. After the appalling incident, Sen. Padilla explained what occurred when he went to ask Noem a question about the thousands of troops deployed to LA and the ramped up cruel rounding up of undocumented immigrants (and more than a few legal immigrants) by ICE agents in recent weeks. 'I began to ask a question,' the Senator detailed 'I was almost immediately forcibly removed from the room. I was forced to the ground, and I was handcuffed. I was not arrested. I was not detained.' 'If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question, if this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question, we can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks to day laborers in the Los Angeles community and throughout California and throughout the country,' the Senator, the son of Mexican immigrants, said outside the federal building in West LA this afternoon. 'We will hold this administration accountable.' Fellow Golden State native Kamala Harris was quick to weigh in on what occurred to the man who replaced her in the Senate when she became Vice-President in 2021: In DC, as the attack on Sen. Padilla took over cable news and the Internet, Democratic House leader Hakeem Jefferies responded in stronger than usual words from the New York Congressman. 'The Trump administration is a disgrace, Secretary Noem is a disgrace, the manhandling of Sen Alex Padilla was a disgrace ..it's un-American,' exclaimed Jeffries Thursday with California's other Senator Adam Schiff standing beside him. In typical Trump administration fashion, Sec. Noem took to the safe space of Fox News to offer justification for the assault on Sen. Padilla. 'Nobody knew who he was when he came into the room, creating a scene,' Noem told Fox's Martha MacCallum in live counter-programming to Sen. Padilla's speaking to the media. 'He was removed from the room, and yes, they started to put handcuffs on him when he finally identified himself. and then that was stopped,' she added of the potential Constitutional crisis flashpoint moment. 'They said he wants to talk to us and. sure, I'd love to sit down and visit. So, we went to a room and visited for 10 or 15 minutes and then exchanged phone numbers.' With more Republicans picking up on false accusations of 'storming cabinet secretaries,' Noem doubled down on the cliches on TV: 'I'm so sick of the politics, Martha, this is literally people's lives.' As Noem spins her own fictional version of events, there has been no confirmation from the Senator's office of that meeting with the DHS Secretary. It should be noted Sen. Padilla was clearly identifying himself as a Senator in the widely circulated video of the incident confirms. Also, it should be pointed out Noem as met and interacted with Sen. Padilla on numerous occasions, especially since the former South Dakota governor was appointed to run DHS. Gov. Newsom took to social media to point out the gap between what Sec. Noem, the GOP, and the DHS officially says and what anyone can plainly see and hear: On the video of the attack on Sen. Padilla, who was in the high level security building for a meeting with military leaders about the troop presence in LA, repeated he had a question. Sen. Padilla had been in the room for several minutes before starting to ask his question, with no apparent move by federal agents to a so-called security threat. Earlier today in a hearing on Capitol Hill, Defense Sec. Pete Hegseth, who is a defendant in Gov. Gavin Newsom's bid for a Temporary Restraining Order on troops in LA, refused to commit to the adminstration compling with court orders. At the same time Trump himself today walked back parts of his anti-migrant policy after getting complaints from corporate America. PREVIOUSLY, 12:22 PM: 'We are a democracy, but we can lose that democracy,' a mournful Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) said today at the Capital in DC mere minutes after Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) was stunningly dragged out of a press conference in West LA by Sec. Kristi Noem. He was handcuffed and hauled off. 'This is so wrong, this is so wrong,' Sen Murray added. The Senator's office says the senior Senator from the state of California, and son of Mexican immigrants, was not detained, but he has not emerged from the federal building yet. DHS have said that the Secret Service shockingly reacted, or over reacted, because they thought the Senator was an 'attacker' who seemed to 'lunge at Noem – a statement that makes no sense with the level of security required to even get inside a federal building. With tensions sky high in LA and thousands of National Guard and US. Marines deployed and protests over the harsh ICE raids. DHS says the Secretary and the Senator had a 15-minute meeting afterwards. That has not been independently confirmed, but Senator Padilla is expected to speak soon. The widely condemned reaction by federal agents as the Senator was seeking to ask Trump loyalist Noem questions comes as massive raids on undocumented immigrants, including church goers and school graduations, have been unleashed all over California and the nation in the last week. As a pivotal court hearing is set to start in the next hour on Gov. Gavin Newsom request for an emergency Temporary Restraining Order on Trump federalizing the Golden State National Guard on June 7 without any consultation with the two-term Democrat. Newsom expressed his own outrage at what happened to Sen. Padilla today – pointing the finger right at Trump and his authoritarian rule.
