Leona Maguire shares sixth place at PGA Championship
Leona Maguire sits in a share of sixth place heading into the final round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
The Cavan native shot a level-par 72 in her third round of the third major of the year to sit on two over for the tournament and sits eight shots off the lead, held by Australia's Minjee Lee who is six under.
Maguire battled back from a shocking start, making double bogey on the second hole and following it up with another dropped shot on the fifth.
But the former amateur world number one got her round going on the seventh hole with birdie and added another two on the tenth and 17th to move up the leaderboard.
Lee leads the field by four shots with Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul the only other player under par, on two under, with a trio on one over, one shot ahead of Maguire.

Leona Maguire is on course for her best Major finish since 2022 as she moved into a tie for sixth at the Women's PGA Championship on a day of tough scoring conditions. The Cavan golfer is eight shots behind Australian Minjee Lee, who fired a three-under-par 69 on Saturday, her second round under par, to take a commanding four-stroke lead going into the final round. Maguire has a tough start to her third round with a double bogey at the second and a bogey at the fifth. But she battled back and got momentum going from the seventh hole, finishing her final 12 holes in three under. 'I feel like I've been actually playing really well for four, five weeks now. I've been sort of telling my team and everybody I'm playing better than I'm scoring, and I feel like this week it's kind of come together a bit nicer,' Maguire said. World number two Jeeno Thitikul enjoyed a three-stroke lead coming into the weekend but fell back to second with a four-over 76. World number one Nelly Korda is on two over alongside Maguire, while Lexi Thompson is one shot better on one over. On the PGA Tour, Tommy Fleetwood opened up a three-shot lead at the Travelers Championship to raise hopes of a maiden PGA Tour victory. The Englishman fired a flawless 63, including five birdies and an eagle at the par-five 13th, to reach 16 under par, three clear of American pair Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley going into Sunday's final round at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. Rory McIlroy covered the outward nine in 31 to move to nine under par and put his name high on the leaderboard. But the Masters champion took six at the par-four 12th and a birdie at the 15th was quickly cancelled out by a dropped shot at the next. McIlroy starts the final day tied for eighth among a group which includes Scheffler.

LEONA MAGUIRE WILL begin her final round of the Women's PGA Championship at 4.28pm (Irish time) as she bids to end the third major of the year with a flourish. The Cavan native ended yesterday with a four-way share of sixth place after a 72 left her on two-over par overall. Australian Minjee Lee is eight shots clear of Maguire on six-under par, enough for a four-shot lead over Jeeno Thitikul. Maguire's third round began poorly, making double bogey on the second and then going to three-over for the day by the fifth. Advertisement Birdies on seven, 10 and the 17th ensured a level-par finish and just one shot off third spot. Lee and Thitikul are the only two players under par at Fields Ranch in Texas.

The Co Cavan star (29) has plummeted 52 spots to 87th in the world rankings over the past year. But while she missed four cuts in a row before arriving at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco, she knew she was playing better than her scores suggested. "I feel like I've been actually playing really well for four or five weeks now," said Maguire, who goes into the final round tied for sixth on two-over, eight shots behind the impressive Australian Minjee Lee, who signed for a bogey-free, three-under 69 to lead by four strokes from Thailand's Jenno Thitikul on six-under. "I've been telling my team and everybody I'm playing better than I'm scoring. And I feel like this week, it has come together a bit nicer. "I like hard golf courses. I always have. I like the challenge. And this one is a challenge for sure, and it's nice to be able to execute the shots that I wanted.": It was a trademark battling performance from the Ballyconnell woman, who looked set for a long day when she double-bogeyed the second and bogeyed the fifth to slip to five-over for the championship. Rounds were taking six hours, but she birdied the seventh from five feet and never looked back as she made clutch par saves at the 11th and 14th before brushing in a four-footer for birdie at the 105-yard 17th. "Obviously, I didn't get off to the best of start, but I accepted that everybody was going to make mistakes today, and at least I got mine out of the way early," she said. "I didn't feel like I'd done a whole lot wrong to be three over through five and just stayed patient; tried to hit as many fairways and greens as I could, and made a really nice birdie on seven, and that kind of got the ball rolling." At the Tipsport Czech Masters on the Ladies European Tour, Lauren Walsh carded a bogey-free, six-under 66 to go into the final round just four shots behind leader Kim Metraux. The Castlewarden star (23) shares sixth place on nine-under at Royal Beroun Golf Club behind the Swiss talent, who carded a bogey-free 63 to lead by a shot from England's Emse Hamilton on 13-under.
