Sheeran's call to improve music ed praised by school

The headteacher of Ed Sheeran's former secondary school has praised the singer's call to improve music education.
Sheeran, backed by other artists including Annie Lennox, Harry Styles and Sir Elton John, has written to the government pushing for funding to offer children from all backgrounds musical opportunities.
Philip Hurst, head of Thomas Mills High in Framlingham, Suffolk, said he had seen a "dismantling of county music services" over the past 30 years and believed in Sheeran's push.
A government spokesperson said it was "committed to ensuring art, music and drama are no longer the preserve of a privileged few".
Sheeran's letter called for a £250 million UK education package this spring "to repair decades of dismantling music".
The letter cited a 2019 report from the British Phonographic Industry which found there had been a 21% decrease in music provision over five years in state schools.
"Music in and out of school should be for all, not a few," the letter added.
"We understand that there are many pressures. As artists, civil society and industry, we want to be part of the solution."
Born in Yorkshire and raised in Suffolk, Sheeran has had 14 UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums, after beginning his career in 2004.
"[Through] My career, which has spanned three decades, I've seen the dismantling of county music services - everything has to be about efficiencies," Mr Hurst told BBC Radio Suffolk.
"Quite frankly, it seems to me that people think spending money on instruments is not efficient."
He continued: "All those signatories to it, I think they are very powerful and it's good timing -the government are at a change with education.
"We've got a national curriculum review going on, Ofsted have come under scrutiny and are looking to adapt their ways and practices.
"It could just be that it makes people sit up and think, and it really should."
A government spokeswoman said its Curriculum and Assessment Review would break down barriers to opportunity, while its new National Centre for Music and Arts Education would "promote opportunities" for young people to pursue artistic and creative interests in school.
The government is set to put a further £2.3bn into schools' budgets, with £1bn for children and young people with high needs.

Ed Sheeran Charts A Brand New No. 1 Album

Ed Sheeran is back at No. 1 on the main albums chart in the United Kingdom this week, during what has turned out to be a fairly quiet period when it comes to major titles vying for the throne. The singer-songwriter returns to the summit not with a brand new release, but with a collection that's already been out for months — and which has previously spent time running the show. As Sheeran prepares his next full-length, fans in his home country are still loving one of his more popular collections, which gathers together many of his most popular smashes. Their collective buying and streaming activity has pushed his compilation +-= Divide X - Tour Collection back to the top. The compilation lifts from No. 3 to No. 1 on the Official Albums chart as Sheeran regains control over the ranking of the most-consumed projects in the nation. +-= Divide X replaces another long-standing favorite — Short n' Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter. That title rebounded to the top for another stint last week, but dips just one spot this frame. Both pop efforts come in just ahead of the highest-rising debut of the week. Something Beautiful by Miley Cyrus earns that distinction as it opens at No. 3. Sheeran's +-= Divide X appears on four albums charts in the U.K. this week — and it leads half of them. The title reaches the top spot on the Official Albums Streaming chart for the first time, pushing from No. 2 to No. 1. It becomes Sheeran's sixth leader in its thirty-sixth frame on the list of the most-played full-lengths on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and others. Pure purchases also aid +-= Divide X in becoming the most-consumed release in the U.K. at the moment. As it surges to No. 1 on the Official Albums Streaming chart, the project also reappears on both the Official Physical Albums and Official Albums Sales lists, breaking back into the top 10 after being absent from both rankings just days ago. +-= Divide X is now a bestseller on each, landing at No. 9 on the physical-only ranking and at No. 10 on the general roster of bestselling albums and EPs in the nation.

Mariah Carey's Comeback Single Shoots Straight Into The Top 10

It's been years since Mariah Carey's last proper era — as the parlance goes these days — and fans have been eager to hear from the elusive chanteuse. While Carey does occasionally drop a collaboration here and there, and she can be heard non-stop throughout December thanks to "All I Want for Christmas Is You," her longtime supporters have been craving more. The Grammy winner has responded with a brand new single, "Type Dangerous," which quickly becomes a bestselling track just hours after its release. "Type Dangerous" immediately shot into the top 10 on the iTunes Top Songs chart in the United States. Its quick adoption among American audiences shows there was serious pent-up demand for new music from Carey — and it confirms that her signature blend of hip-hop and R&B with pop sensibilities still connects with a wide audience. As of the time of writing, "Type Dangerous" sits at No. 9 on the ranking. The current top 10 on the iTunes Top Songs tally is packed with new releases, and had Carey shifted her drop to another week, she might be charting even higher. At the moment, Barbra Streisand and Laufey lead with their joint tune "Letter to My 13-Year-Old Self." That track bests "Manchild" from Sabrina Carpenter, which sits at No. 2. The Backstreet Boys — yes, those Backstreet Boys — fill the next six spots with some of the group's biggest hits, as 2025 is shaping up to be a massive year for the boy band. Coming in just behind Carey is "Sapphire" by Ed Sheeran, though this order could shift throughout Friday. Carey has been teasing new music for the past several days, and it seems there's more than just one tune on the way. Visuals she's recently shared on social media hint at MC16, which is shorthand for her sixteenth full-length. The project, which has yet to be properly announced, will mark her first full-length since 2018's Caution. In the years since that album, Carey has released a handful of tracks, including remixes of Latto's "Big Energy" and Ariana Grande's "Yes, And?" She also tours annually around Christmas, as her holiday staple brings in millions of dollars annually thanks to massive upticks in streams, sales, and especially radio airplay.
