DMK urges government to help pilgrims detained in Rajasthan
Leader of Opposition and DMK convenor R. Siva has urged the government to extend assistance to the group of Kashi-bound pilgrims who had been detained by authorities in Rajasthan.
In a statement, Mr. Siva contacted Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and urged him to take steps for the safe return of the devotees, many of them elderly and included women, to Puducherry given reports that they were detained and allegedly harassed because the vehicle they used lacked proper permits.
Mr. Siva, who also referred the issue to the Transport Commissioner and the District Collector, arranged the immediate transfer of monetary assistance through the DMK to the stranded pilgrims.

Madurai: Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the DMK govt saying it indulged in largescale corruption across departments, and said the NDA alliance would form the govt in Tamil nadu and West Bengal in 2026. "Modi ji sent nutrition kits worth ₹450 crore for poor Tamil people. DMK handed over the contract to a single company and committed massive irregularities. There's a ₹4,600 crore sand mining scam. The Tasmac liquor scam alone amounts to ₹39,775 crore, this money could've built two classrooms in every primary school of Tamil Nadu," he said at the BJP's district and mandal-level office bearers' meeting in Madurai. Responding to Stalin's remark that 'Amit Shah cannot defeat DMK,' he said, 'Stalin Ji, you are right, I cannot defeat the DMK. But the people of Tamil Nadu can. The pulse of the public is clear — this time the people will uproot the DMK govt.' He said the Madurai meeting would be the starting point of the end of DMK's rule. Highlighting BJP's achievements, he said, "2024 was a milestone — Narendra Modi became Prime Minister for a third term. We formed a full majority government in Odisha for the first time, returned to power in Haryana for a third term, and registered a big win in Maharashtra. In 2025, we ended a 27-year drought by forming a government in Delhi. Now, it's Tamil Nadu and Bengal's turn." He challenged Stalin to release a report card on election manifesto. "DMK hasn't fulfilled even 60% of its manifesto. It's a 100% failed govt. Due to corruption in illicit liquor, poor people are dying. Caste violence is being instigated in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, and crimes against women and elderly are rising. The CM remains unconcerned," he added. Accusing the DMK govt of trying to rename Thiruparankundram hill as 'Sikandar Hill', he urged all devotees to participate in the June 22 Murugan meet in Madurai. "Stalin always asks, 'What has Modi done for Tamil Nadu?' Under the UPA, the state received ₹1.53 lakh crore in 10 years. Under Modi, it received ₹6.80 lakh crore — including ₹63,000 crore for roads, ₹77,000 crore for railways, and ₹3,500 crore for airports," he said. Praising Tamil Nadu people for their support during the Tiranga Yatras held after Operation Sindoor, Shah said they were no less than in any other part of India. "Madurai has a 3,000-year-old holy heritage. The Murugan meet scheduled for June 22 will show the exit door to the DMK in Tamil Nadu," he said. Earlier, Amit Shah visited the Meenakshi Amman temple and attended the core committee meeting. Chants of 'Aragora,' `Veeravel,' and 'Vertivel,' rent the air as he was welcomed by party cadres at the mandal and district functionary BJP leaders presented him with a symbolic 'Vel'. BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthiran said Shah's visit was a continuation of the momentum generated by 'Operation Sindoor'. Party women's wing national president Vanathi Srinivasan said Madurai was chosen for the meeting as it lies at the heart of Tamil Nadu and is the venue of the upcoming Murugan meet. The pontiff of Madurai Adheenam, Sri La Sri Harihara Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal, welcomed Amit Shah during his temple visit and submitted a representation to him.

"People of Tamil Nadu will never accept BJP": DMK's Elangovan
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 9(ANI): Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's speech in Tamil Nadu's Madurai, DMK leader TKS Elangovan claimed that the BJP is the 'main enemy' of the people of Tamil Nadu and will 'never accept' them. 'People of Tamil Nadu will never accept the BJP into the state because the BJP is their main enemy. They know the BJP is trying to kill development in Tamil Nadu. They (BJP) want to spoil the education system, which is number one in the country. In every area, the BJP government stands against the people of Tamil Nadu,' Elanvogan told ANI a day earlier. He accused the BJP of 'manipulating things' and said they do not have the mandate of the people. 'They might have won elections, but look at what happened in Maharashtra--the total votes polled and counted were different. They win only by cheating the democracy and manipulating things. They haven't won with the people's support,' Elangovan said. The DMK leader further alleged, 'They (BJP) don't want to give money to Tamil Nadu, but they will give it to Uttar Pradesh. They took away revenue sources by introducing GST and removing the commercial tax regime,' he added. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the NDA will form government in Tamil Nadu as the people of the state will 'defeat' the DMK government in the 2026 Assembly election. He also reiterated his demand to the state government for teaching medical and engineering courses in the Tamil language. 'The NDA government of the BJP-AIADMK alliance will be formed here in 2026. The Union Minister said that he expected Chief Minister Stalin to write to PM Modi, thanking him for installing Sengol in Parliament. 'I want to repeat my demand to the Tamil Nadu government that medical and engineering be taught in the Tamil language soon. PM Modi respected Tamil Nadu by installing Sengol in Parliament, and I expect MK Stalin to write a letter to the PM to thank him for it,' he said. Shah said that before Modi became Prime Minister, there were more deadly terror attacks than in Pahalgam, but there was no befitting reply. 'Our innocent citizens were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack. Terrorists killed them after asking their religion. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, our three armed forces entered Pakistan and killed terrorists. There were many terrorists attack before Modi became Prime Minister, but there was no befitting reply,' he said. 'After Modi ji became Prime Minister in 2014, the Uri, Pulwama, and now Pahalgam attacks took place. With surgical strike, airstrike, and Operation Sindoor, we have given a befitting reply to terrorists responsible for these attacks,' he added. Shah thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for their warm response to the Tiranga Yatra, which was held to honour the bravery of the armed forces in Operation Sindoor. He said that the people of Tamil Nadu will 'throw out' the DMK government in next year's Assembly elections. 'I have had participated in election campaigns across the country. I know the pulse of the public. This time, the people of Tamil Nadu will throw out the DMK government,' he said. 'In 2025, we formed the government in Delhi, in 2026, BJP-NDA will form the government in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu,' he added. (ANI)

From Chenab bridge to Madrid stage, a tale of languages that travel, unite and sometimes provoke

At times, simple and short words can be potentially more impactful in conveying powerful messages. All these were easily noticed over the last week or so when phrases of two public figures from Tamil Nadu gained traction. In fact, the speed with which their utterances spread was faster than the time taken by Vande Bharat Express to cross the Chenab bridge, an engineering marvel. But there the similarity ends. If actor-politician Kamal Haasan was intending to lay emphasis on some kind of familial relationship between Tamil and Kannada by his remark that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil', he ended up having a 'Thug Life' image in Karnataka and his movie shunted into the sidings. On the other side of the world was a questioner in Spain who was perhaps yearning for quite a bit of thrill when he asked DMK leader Kanimozhi about India's national language, but her reply that 'the national language of India is unity in diversity' must have derailed the enquirer's train of thoughts off its rails. With her riposte, the member of Parliament signalled that she was in Madrid to guard Indian interests against any type of onslaught, including on languages which, like junctions, intersect and influence each other before reaching their respective platforms. The gist of the two episodes is that, like people, languages travel far and wide and even to space, helping bridge the gulf, just like the Chenab bridge, which became possible only after people from all corners of India joined hands to conquer insurmountable challenges. Just as Indian cinema and Indian Railways have crossed all hurdles, it's hoped that Kashmir to Kanniyakumari track and field will inspire the nation to live in unity and take delight in diversity.
