Hours-long queue for Malaysia's ‘flying roti canai' at Expo 2025 Osaka as crispy butter bomb takes over

Malay Mail2 days ago

OSAKA, June 2 — The 'Flying Roti Canai' has quickly become a crowd-puller at Expo 2025 Osaka, drawing visitors to the Malaysia Pavilion with its skilful preparation and the irresistible buttery aroma wafting through the air.
The sight of roti canai being expertly tossed high into the air by Muhammad Muiz Ruzaini and Mohamad Zul Imran Zulkifle, combined with the tempting aroma, has whetted the appetites of visitors. Some are willing to queue for up to two hours.
Muhammad Muiz said he did not expect to be selected as part of the Malaysian delegation to Expo 2025 Osaka, where he would showcase the rich flavours of Malaysian cuisine on the world stage.
What makes the experience even more rewarding is the overwhelming response from visitors, said the Kedahan.
'Many praised the deliciousness of the roti canai and gave very positive feedback, both in terms of taste and our presentation.
'After they ate, many would come up and say 'oishī' (delicious). Some even repeated it seven times,' he said, adding that most of the visitors were from Japan, South Korea and China.

The freshly made roti canai, served with chicken curry and dhal, is priced at 1,680 yen per serving.
Daily sales average between 1,000 and 1,600 pieces, underscoring its growing popularity among visitors from Japan, South Korea, China, and beyond.
Roti canai is a pan-fried flatbread that is a popular breakfast choice in Malaysia, made from a mixture of flour, water, salt, butter and eggs.
The dough is skilfully stretched, flipped and spun in the air to create a layered texture — crispy and flaky on the outside but soft on the inside.
In 2023, TasteAtlas, a global food database, ranked roti canai among the 'Top 100 Best Street Foods in the World'.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Zul Imran, a roti canai maker from Penang, expressed hope that the growing popularity of roti canai at the Expo would help elevate it on the global culinary map and inspire more tourists to visit Malaysia.
'I hope the Malaysia Pavilion roti canai becomes the number one dish at Expo 2025,' he said.
Japanese visitor Yoko Yoshinaga described the dish as 'sweet, had a unique texture, and addictive'.
'This is my second time having roti canai. I first saw it on X (formerly Twitter), and the unforgettable taste brought me back. I lined up again just to relive the experience,' she said.
Yoshinaga, who visited Malaysia 30 years ago, praised the nation's development, calling it a peaceful and modern country.

Another visitor, Hanako Sekimukai, who tried roti canai for the first time, said she was pleasantly surprised by its flavour.
'I've been to Malaysia before, but I never had the chance to try roti canai. The chicken curry served with it wasn't too spicy, which made it even more enjoyable,' she said, adding that the cultural performances at the pavilion brought back fond memories of her time in Malaysia.
Located on a 2,654.52-square-metre site across three floors, the Malaysia Pavilion reflects the nation's diverse culture and dynamic economy.
Under the theme 'Weaving a Future in Harmony', the pavilion highlights Malaysia's commitment to a sustainable, inclusive and forward-looking future. — Bernama

Chinese travel more during Dragon Boat holiday but spending lags

China's Dragon Boat Festival took place from May 31 to June 2, 2025 and was celebrated throughout the country with local dragon boat races. (EPA Images pic) HONG KONG : Chinese people travelled more over the three-day Dragon Boat holiday this year, but spending remained below pre-pandemic levels, government data showed today, indicators that are closely watched as barometers of consumer confidence. Consumption in the world's second-largest economy has suffered amid sputtering growth and a prolonged property crisis, with uncertainty from the US-China trade war also weighing on consumer confidence. The latest data painted a mixed picture for China's consumer economy. Tourists took an estimated 119 million domestic journeys from Friday to Monday, up 5.7% from the same holiday period last year, according to the tourism and culture ministry. Overall spending over the period rose to ¥42.73 billion (US$5.94 billion, a year-on-year increase of 5.9%, but the average amount spent per traveller was a little under ¥360 (US$50), according to Reuters calculations, remaining stubbornly below 2019 levels of around ¥410 per trip. The annual festival took place from May 31 to June 2 this year and is celebrated throughout the country with local dragon boat races. Many people take the opportunity to have short holidays, crowding train stations and airports around the country. Overall, more than 653.7 million inter-regional trips across all regions in China, which include tourist trips, were made during the three-day holiday, up 2.5% year-on-year, state media Xinhua reported today, and road travel was up 2.4% from last year with 597.3 million trips recorded. Cross-border journeys rose 2.7% to 5.9 million, with 231,000 foreign nationals entering the country visa-free during the holiday. China has been expanding its visa policy, with citizens of 43 countries granted visa-free access, while visa-free transit for up to 240 hours in China is available for 54 countries. Chinese also boosted spending on entertainment over the holiday, with cinema box office revenue reaching ¥460 million (US$63.9 million), surpassing last year's ¥384 million, according to data from online ticketing platform Maoyan. Tom Cruise's latest movie 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' topped charts, and generated ¥228 million, half of the total revenue during the holiday period, which was seen as a positive indicator for the upcoming summer season.

China rolls out special Asean visa for 10 South-East Asian countries and also adds Timor Leste in list

SOUTH-EAST ASIA (Bernama): China has rolled out an Asean Visa for the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and Asean observer Timor-Leste, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The ministry's spokesperson, Lin Jian, said this new programme offers five-year multiple-entry visas to eligible applicants visiting China for business purposes and their spouses as well as children, granting a maximum stay of 180 days. "For anyone with more specific questions on visas to China, they are welcome to contact our diplomatic and consular missions in their countries,' he said in a statement today. He said the initiative was to further facilitate cross-border travels in the region, on top of the visa-free arrangement between China and countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and China's 'Lancang-Mekong visas' programme for Mekong countries. In recent years, he noted that China and Asean have advanced the building of a community with a shared future. "Visits between the people of China and Southeast Asian countries have been frequent. "There is a mutual hope to further ease travel between the two sides,' he pointed out. He also said that the growing 'visa-free list' shows China's firm resolve in expanding high-level opening up. "The various measures China has taken to ease cross-border travel are all part of China's concrete action to create an open global economy,' he explained. Adding to the proof, Lin said in the first quarter of this year, China received over nine million visits by foreigners, up by over 40 per cent year-on-year. "And in the first four months, more than 18,000 foreign-invested companies were established in China, up by 12.1 per cent year-on-year,' he said. He further said that China will continue to improve entry policies and add more countries to the visa-free list. "China is committed to greater openness and deeper cooperation for shared prosperity with the rest of the world,' he added. - Bernama

However, he was later referred to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZ II) here, where he successfully underwent surgery," he told Bernama today. He said the victim's condition was now stable, but the hospital would monitor the wound for possible infection.
