
Micro-Retirement: One In 10 Americans Plan A Career Break In 2025
The trend of micro-retirement is gaining popularity in the United States
The word 'micro' means small, but there's nothing small about micro's popularity. Everything seems to be going micro this year! I've written about micro-breaks, micro-chillers, micro-steps and micro-self-care. Now, Gen Z has popularized another micro trend: micro-retirement, a mental health detour on their career path. Workday disillusionment and a craving for more flexibility are pushing high-potential employees out of the workforce, with 91% of industries seeing a spike in top talent departures. Micro-retirement has become a popular landing place for employees seeking to manage job stress and gain work-life balance.
Most of us think of retirement as something we wait 40 years to enjoy, receive the proverbial gold watch and sleep-in during mornings. But that image has become an empty promise for many retirees, embracing a modern version of retirement: micro-retirement--a planned, extended career break from work to rest, travel or explore personal and career goals.
I wrote about this topic for Forbes.com last year. Instead of waiting until retirement to travel the world, Gen Z are taking micro-retirement between jobs to have time out from work stress, paving the way for the next generation of workers by continuing to prioritize a healthy work-life balance. They are to be credited, at least partially, for normalizing the belief that we don't have to drive ourselves into the ground to be effective in our jobs, that burnout is not a badge of honor for hard work and that work-life balance is essential for our mental health.
Science shows when we take time out to rest and relax, we're more engaged and productive at work tasks. Science-backed studies, reveal that simple solutions like micro self-care--essentially the same as self-care, but in small, quick doses--prevents burnout and keeps careers afloat. Plus, taking micro-breaks--short breaks throughout the day--counteracts fatigue, boosts well-being and keeps stress from becoming cumulative.
A new SideHustles.com study of 1,000 American workers reveals that 54% say micro-retirement helps prevent burnout and boosts well-being. One in ten intend to take a career break or micro-retirement in 2025. The best way to understand how a micro-retirement works is to consider the five P's.
1. Purpose. A micro-retirement isn't an escape from a miserable job, overbearing manager or dream vacation. It has scaffolding and structure that starts with a purpose of why you want to take a career break: to recharge your batteries, recover from burnout, learn a foreign language, have self-reflection, contemplate your career path or pursue a hobby.
2. Plan. Once you know your purpose, you develop your intentions: how much time you plan to take off, how you will use it and the actions to achieve your purpose. Otherwise, you could fritter the time away. You're specific about how you will recharge your batteries, recover from burnout or learn a foreign language, etc. A friend of mine, for example, took a career break for language indulgence in Costa Rica to learn Spanish. The respondents in the SideHustles.com study say they would take an average of four months off for a micro-retirement.
3. Pay. How will you financially support yourself during the break? According to the study, micro-retirees intend to save around $15K before taking a career break. The majority (67%) say they will rely on savings, with over 36% funding their micro-retirement with a side hustle or freelance work.
4. Pitch. The next step is to discuss your proposal with your employer. You might have to negotiate the time frame and the details of returning or not returning to your position. When I was a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, I took a year off to write a book. The Dean of my college hired someone to replace me for that year. But not all employers are open to the idea of a micro-retirement.
5. Ponder post-micro-retirement. After a micro-retirement, will you want to return to your position, continue with your side hustle or find another more meaningful position? You might not know until midway or after the break, but it's something to ponder. Over half (52%) of study respondents say they plan to return to their current employer, 13% intend to find a new job and 35% are undecided.
Experts acknowledge that, while the trend sounds appealing on the surface, it's actually a red flag for employers. 'Micro-retirement is a reflection of the broader trends in today's workforce, such as burnout, disillusionment and a desire for greater flexibility and purpose,' says Phil Willburn, Workday's VP of people analytics. Willburn, a believer in work flexibility, references Workday's latest Global Workforce report, which shows high-potential employees leaving at alarming rates and promotion opportunities lagging in many industries.
'Job applications are growing nearly four times faster than openings, creating a competitive environment that leaves many workers feeling undervalued or stuck,' he told me by email. "In that context, it's no surprise that some employees are opting out, even temporarily, when they don't see a clear path forward. Micro-retirement becomes a form of agency in a job market that all too often feels uncertain.'
Willburn advises that to stem the tide of micro-retirement, employers must create a culture of growth, invest in the employee experience and ensure that people feel connected to the 'why' behind the work. 'In today's evolving workforce landscape, meaningful work, flexibility and recognition are non-negotiables for keeping high-potential talent engaged and thriving,' he argues.
Paul Farnsworth, president of Dice points out to me another caveat, especially for tech professionals. "Tech professionals who are feeling burned out and have earned enough from their specialized skills are taking temporary or micro-retirements decades ahead of their expected retirement date, but taking one of those also requires the confidence that your skills will still be relevant when you re-enter the industry.'
Willburn suggests that employers address these challenges by going beyond basic perks and invest in what really matters, which he describes as 'meaningful work, sense of accomplishment, career growth and trust in the organization's leadership and strategy.'
Ed Huang, career expert at SideHustles.com, told me by email that his research team was struck with how quickly micro-retirement is gaining traction. But he says what really stands out is that 75% of workers--especially millennials and Gen Z--want employers to offer structured options like unpaid sabbaticals or extended PTO. 'With more than a third planning to fund their break through side hustles or freelance work, it's clear people aren't waiting for workplace permission—they're carving out rest and personal growth on their own terms,' he concludes. 'For employers, that's a sign: offering flexibility isn't just nice to have, it's becoming a must-have.'

Measles resurgence highlights the toll of RFK Jr.'s anti-vaccine policies
After the U.S. surpassed 1,000 reported measles cases nationwide, it's clear the Trump administration is failing to protect our health and well-being. The measles outbreak in Texas is now the largest since 2000, when the country eliminated measles. And it's not yet over, threatening to make measles endemic in America again, where the risk of infection comes from within our country. Furthermore, two unvaccinated school-aged children in Texas died from measles, the first American children to die from the viral infection since 2003. Normally, a preventable infection causing avoidable deaths of children would lead to prompt government action. In 1991, I was a medical student with the U.S. Public Health Service in Philadelphia during a large measles outbreak. Over 1,000 people were infected, and nine children died. Government and public health leaders required home visits of infected children, mass immunization, education efforts and even court-mandated vaccinations. The outbreak was stopped. In Dec. 2014, a measles outbreak began at Disneyland and spread in communities with low vaccination rates. Public health action stopped this large outbreak at 125 cases. To prevent further outbreaks in California, I authored Senate Bill 277, which eliminated non-medical exemptions for school vaccines. And with further U.S. measles outbreaks in 2019, I authored Senate Bill 276 to crack down on fraudulent medical exemptions. These laws — championed by California parents demanding safe schools for children — raised statewide vaccination rates and shielded our communities. As Congress waits, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is dismantling decades of public health achievement that will make America sicker. Kennedy reduced vaccine outreach, removed key public health officials, spread disinformation from his official post and suppressed data while elevating conspiracy theorists to top positions. Kennedy and the Department of Government Efficiency fired a quarter of Health and Human Services staff, gutting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health teams vital to outbreak response. He installed anti-vaccine extremists as advisors, including David Grier, a discredited researcher disciplined for unethical experiments on children with autism, to 'research' if vaccines cause autism, despite decades of research debunking this myth. The CDC has been muzzled: An analysis showing high rates of measles in low vaccination areas was suppressed, and dozens of Texas vaccination clinics were forced to close. When Kennedy dismantled the CDC's communication team, his former anti-vaccine organization, Children's Health Defense, filled the void with disinformation by publishing a fake CDC-branded vaccine 'safety' website that falsely linked vaccines to autism. The site mimicked official CDC design and branding, deliberately misleading the public. After news reports exposed the deception and forced the site's removal, no federal action has been taken to investigate or prosecute this unlawful impersonation of a federal agency. Furthermore, Dr. Peter Marks, the nation's top vaccine regulator who led President Donald Trump's Operation Warp Speed, refused a demand for false data on brain swelling and death caused by the Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine, of which there are no credible cases. Kennedy forced him to resign. In his resignation letter, Marks wrote, 'it has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.' And what of the dead children from measles? Kennedy dismissed the first measles death, saying 'it's not unusual.' He blamed measles on poor nutrition, called vaccines a 'personal choice' that could cause 'adverse events' and claimed Vitamin A and cod liver oil treated measles. Subsequently, many Texas children hospitalized with measles also had Vitamin A toxicity. At his first Congressional hearing, Kennedy testified, 'I don't think people should be taking medical advice from me.' He then refused to answer whether he would vaccinate a child against polio. As Health and Human Services secretary, he cravenly refuses to save Americans in a public health crisis. How many children must get sick — and even die — before Congress demands that Kennedy and the Trump administration answer for these preventable deaths and the continued spread of a preventable disease? This flu season, as flu vaccination declined, 226 children died from influenza — the highest since the 2009-10 pandemic. Other preventable and deadly diseases, including polio and whooping cough, will also return when vaccination is hampered and discouraged. Our state has made progress in raising vaccination rates, but we are not immune to Kennedy's dangerous vaccine disinformation; California has communities with enough unvaccinated people to fuel a serious outbreak. Measles outbreaks in other states makes it imperative that California strengthen our public health defenses against sparks of infection. And California needs Congress to hold President Donald Trump and Kennedy accountable for not stopping preventable disease in America. Menopause drug might prevent breast cancer and treat hot flashes, research finds
A drug intended to treat menopause symptoms could double as breast cancer prevention. New research from Northwestern University in Illinois found that Duavee, a Pfizer-made drug, 'significantly reduced' breast tissue cell growth, which is a major indicator of cancer progression. Advertisement A phase 2 clinical trial included 141 post-menopausal women who had been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), also known as stage 0 breast cancer, according to a press release from Northwestern. This non-invasive breast cancer affects more than 60,000 American women each year, often leading to an outcome of invasive breast cancer. The women were separated into two groups — one received Duavee and the other took a placebo for a month before undergoing breast surgery. Duavee is a conjugated estrogen/bazedoxifene (CE/BZA) drug, which combines estrogen with another medication that minimizes the potential harmful side effects of the hormone. Advertisement 'The key takeaway from the study is that CE/BZA slows the growth (proliferation) of cells in milk ducts of DCIS that expressed the estrogen receptor significantly more than placebo,' Dr. Swati Kulkarni, lead investigator and professor of breast surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told Fox News Digital. 5 New research from Northwestern University found that the drug Duavee 'significantly reduced' breast tissue cell growth, a major indicator of cancer progression. D-Day rally in Idaho protests proposed cuts to Veterans Affairs

But he wasn't going to miss a rally Friday afternoon in front of the Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was taking part in the Unite for Veterans rally in conjunction with a national rally held at the same time in Washington, D.C., to protest proposed cuts to the VA. 'I don't know what veterans are going to do if they keep screwing with things,' Peterson told me. 'We made a promise, they made a promise, and now they're breaking their promise,' he said as he broke down in tears. He said he's received excellent care at the Boise VA, which he said has saved his life twice, from pneumonia and sepsis, and is now providing care for his cancer. Earlier this year, it was revealed that as part of cuts by Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency, the Department of Veterans Affairs was planning to cut 83,000 jobs, slashing employment by over 17% at the federal agency that provides health care for millions of veterans, according to an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press. The date for Friday's rally, June 6, is significant: It's the anniversary of D-Day, the day that Allied forces stormed the beaches at Normandy, France, marking the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. About 70 people lined Fort Street in front of the Boise VA center, drawing honks and waves from most of the passersby. A couple of knuckleheads shouted 'Go Trump,' apparently in celebration of cutting funding for programs that help veterans. (A passing Tesla cybertruck drew a round of boos from the protesters.) Protesters held signs that read, 'Hands off VA,' 'Cut DOGE, Not VA,' 'Veterans fought for us, now we fight for them,' 'No King! Veteran, not loser' and 'Our vets are not suckers or losers.' Nancy Daniels, holding a sign that read 'Our vets deserve a fully staffed VA,' is an Air Force veteran who served seven years during the Vietnam War and spent 20 years working as a medical service worker at the Boise VA before retiring in 2023. 'This is a phenomenal center,' she told me. 'I am proud to be a veteran. It just breaks my heart to see what's happening.' She said Idaho's congressional delegation showed up several years ago to support the opening a women's wellness center and clinic at the Boise VA. 'They supported us, and now they're doing this,' she said. 'Shame on them.' Earlier this year, I interviewed one VA employee from Boise who was fired from his job in Washington, D.C., shortly after he had been hired. His job was to help connect veterans with services. These cuts are not going to fly with the American public, Jim Jones, former Idaho attorney general and state Supreme Court chief justice who helped to organize Friday's local rally, told me. Jones spent 401 days in a heavy artillery division in the Army in Vietnam. 'They've made plans for draconian cuts to the VA,' said Jones, who was wearing an Army uniform that he hadn't worn since August 1969. 'They want to get rid of 83,000 staffers, and it's just not going to work. It's a major betrayal of our veteran population, and I don't think the American people are willing to put up with it.' There is good news — sort of. Despite DOGE cuts, the House Appropriations Committee, of which U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, is a member, included an $83 billion increase in its fiscal 2026 VA spending bill to about $453 billion, according to That would be good news — if Congress approves it and if Trump doesn't arbitrarily cut it. That said, medical care would get only a 4% bump in the committee's approved budget, and the plan includes allowing veterans to see private doctors. Raymond O'Dell, of Boise, who is trying to form a Veterans for Peace chapter in Idaho, said he's worried about plans to privatize VA medical services. 'I just don't think the public truly understands what would be lost if we privatize the VA,' he said. 'Veterans are not where the cuts need to be made. We should find cuts elsewhere. We made a promise to our veterans.' For Peterson, that promise is sacrosanct. 'We signed a check,' he said, breaking down again, 'to put our lives on the line for the Constitution, and these nippleheads in Washington, D.C., who have never served or pretend that they served have no idea what it is they have to do. They promised us their support, and they need to take care of those who have served this country.'
