NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — 10 On Your Side Karina Garcia is speaking with ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton after the Wednesday shooting incident.
NPD: 2 dead following shooting at ODU's campus
Two people were killed after being shot in a parking lot on West 49th Street in the area of Broderick Dining Commons on the Old Dominion University campus, Norfolk and ODU police said.
ODU President Hemphill released the following statement after the shooting:
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:Late yesterday, there was a campus incident that resulted in life-threatening injuries to two individuals. An immediate alert was sent with subsequent updates in the hours following the incident. As the City of Norfolk Police Department continues its investigation, additional information will be shared once available. The University is aware of misinformation being shared both on campus and in the community. Individuals are encouraged to rely on official information issued by the City of Norfolk Police Department, as well as formal University statements.Although no Old Dominion University students, faculty, or staff were injured, this incident certainly impacts our community. Please keep those impacted in your thoughts and prayers. Also, please accept our sincere appreciation for your patience and understanding during this evolving situation. To support our campus community, walk-in counseling is available throughout the day in the Student Recreation and Well-Being Center. For students, the Office of Counseling Services is hosting a Let's Talk About It virtual support group from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM today with registration available on MonarchGroups. A Michigan college student was killed in an "intentional" shooting when multiple gunshots were fired along the floor during a house party, police said. Connor Lotterman, 19, was struck in the head by a bullet recklessly fired by an unidentified 20-year-old suspect on May 9 at approximately 11:11 p.m., Ottowa County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Fox News Digital. "The shooting was quite intentional," Ottowa County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jake Sparks told Wood-tv. "Multiple rounds were fired. It wasn't like as if it were a one-shot accidental discharge. This was numerous rounds discharged. Although the result of the shooting led to an accidental death, this shooting was intentional." Two Teens Killed In Mass Shooting At Washington State House Party, Several Others Wounded: Police The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department revealed that the 20-year-old male suspect obtained a firearm that was located in the residence. The male suspect then fired multiple rounds through the floor of an upstairs bedroom, police said. The bullets penetrated the floor and one struck Lotterman in the head. Lotterman, an engineering student at Grand Valley State University (GVSU), was transported to the local hospital in critical condition. Read On The Fox News App Dr. Stephen Cohle, the Kent County medical examiner, confirmed to Fox News Digital that the manner of death was accidental, caused by a gunshot wound to the head. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the incident, police said. All individuals involved in the incident were known to each other, police said. Police said his name would not be released at this time. Sheriff's detectives continue to investigate and anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer at 1-877-88-SILENT (745368) or Lotterman was the youngest of five, according to an online obituary. His older sister mourned him in a birthday message posted on Instagram. "Thank you for being the best little brother a girl could ask for," Marielle Lotterman wrote. "I am so thankful to God for the 20 amazing years you had on this earth. What a day that will be when we all unite in heaven." Aaron Haight, GVSU dean of students, told Fox News Digital that the college community is "saddened by Connor's tragic death." "On behalf of President Mantella, the Laker community extends our deepest sympathies to his family and friends," he said. "Students may utilize the Care referral process and the University Counseling Center for support and resources during this difficult time. TALLMADGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A teenager has died after being shot in the head at a party on May 9 in Tallmadge Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. Deputies on Thursday identified him as Connor Lotterman, a 19-year-old from Tallmadge Township. He was a student studying at Grand Valley State University. It happened just after 11 p.m. Friday at a residence in the area of 2nd Avenue near Lake Michigan Drive. Deputies say that a 20-year-old male was in an upstairs bedroom at the house. Lotterman was downstairs with others at the party. 1 hospitalized following Tallmadge Township shooting The 20-year-old found a gun somewhere in the home, and shot multiple rounds through the floor, deputies say. They say those bullets traveled through the floor and one of them hit Lotterman in the head. Lotterman was taken to the hospital. He later died. The sheriff's office was notified that an autopsy was completed on May 14 and that the death was ruled as accidental. Alcohol is also believed to be a factor, deputies say. All of the people in the residence at the time of the shooting knew each other, according to deputies. Investigators are still working on gathering details and are working with Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office to review potential charges for the 20-year-old, whose name is not being released at this time. Anyone with additional information is urged to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer at (745368). Elizabeth City State University moves to virtual learning following shooting on campus

NOTE: This video is previous coverage from 4/27/25 ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) has decided to move to virtual learning for the rest of the semester following Sunday's shooting on campus, according to Interim Chancellor Catherine Edmonds. The virtual learning will begin Wednesday, April 30, while classes for both Monday and Tuesday have been cancelled. The shooting happened at 12:30 a.m., as students were on the quad for ECSU's 'Viking Fest' event. One killed, at least 5 injured, during ECSU Viking Fest event Four people were shot and two other people were injured during the commotion. Three people who were shot were ECSU students, who are all expected to survive. The one person shot who was not an ECSU student died from their injuries, according to officials. The university is waiting until that person's family is notified before releasing their name. ECSU student recalls deadly shooting on campus Dear ECSU Community, Like many of you, I am devastated by the shooting incident that took place over the weekend. Sadly, a 24-year-old man visiting our campus lost his life. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. I'm also sending support and well wishes to our students who were injured on Sunday. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and community remain our highest priorities. In response, we have cancelled classes and all campus events for Monday, Apr. 28 and Tuesday, Apr. 29. All classes will transition to remote learning beginning Wednesday, Apr. 30 through the final three days of the semester, and exams will be delivered remotely. Please know that support services are available for students, faculty, and staff. For students, please visit or contact ECSU Counseling Services or the Office of the Dean of Students.
