Militants attack Nigerian army base, troops missing, sources say
Suspected Islamist militants attacked a Nigerian army base and captured soldiers and ammunition during a raid in the insurgency-hit northeastern Borno state in the early hours of Monday, two security sources told Reuters.
A surge in attacks this year by Boko Haram and its splinter rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has raised fears of a major comeback by jihadists, whose tactics include armed drones and explosive devices planted on major roads.
A soldier who escaped the attack said the militants arrived on motorbikes and gun trucks and laid siege on the 153 Task Force Battalion base in Borno's Marte district from around 0200 GMT.
The Nigerian troops retreated to the larger 24 Task Force Brigade in nearby Dikwa district where they regrouped and launched a counter-attack that retook the base, said the soldier, who declined to be named for security reasons.
Several soldiers were feared dead and others missing. 'As I'm speaking to you now, they killed many of our soldiers while some were captured alive by the insurgents while we were withdrawing from the attack,' the soldier said.
Nigerian Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Appolonia Anele referred questions to the country's Defence Headquarters, which did not immediately respond.
A member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), which is helping the military fight jihadists, said the militants took ammunition and burned the army's anti-mine resistance vehicles.
The CJTF member, who also escaped, said the military was still searching for the missing soldiers and had yet to account for the number of dead troops.
Security experts have attributed the resurgence to a lull in fighting between Boko Haram and Islamic State-backed ISWAP and the adoption of aerial technology by the groups.

Two died after fire breaks out at Delhi's Dilshad Garden
ANI 09 Jun 2025, 04:01 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Two people, including a 24-year-old man, were killed after a fire broke out in Delhi's Dilshad Garden, a fire official said late Sunday. The fire broke out at the Kodi colony. According to Fire Officer Anup Singh, they received a call regarding the fire at 11:32 pm on Sunday. 'We reached the spot and carried out the firefighting operations. After dousing the fire, it was found that two e-rickshaws and motorcycles were gutted in the fire. Two people also lost their lives in the fire incident,' Singh said. Among the dead, one was 24 years old, and the other was 60 years old. The charging of the e-rickshaws seems to have caused the fire,' the officer added. Further investigation is underway, he added. Earlier on Friday, a fire broke out at an e-rickshaw charging station in the Ghonda area of northeast Delhi, prompting a swift response from the Delhi Fire Services (DFS). Four fire engines were immediately dispatched to the scene to control the blaze, DFS officials confirmed. The incident was reported in the afternoon, with emergency teams working to douse the flames. Troops sent by Trump reach protest-hit Los Angeles over Governor Newsom's wishes
Hundreds of National Guard troops took up positions in Los Angeles on Sunday (June 8, 2025) on the orders of U.S. President Donald Trump, a rare deployment over the head of the state Governor, after unruly protests against immigration raids. The U.S. military said 300 soldiers from the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team had been sent to three separate locations in the greater Los Angeles area, and were "conducting safety and protection of federal property & personnel." Helmeted troops in camouflage gear and carrying guns could be seen in front of a federal complex — including a detention centre — with the phrase "Our City" spray-painted on it in downtown Los Angeles. The deployment overrode the protests of local officials, an extraordinary move not seen in decades that California Governor Gavin Newsom slammed as "purposefully inflammatory." It came ahead of more planned protests in the city, which has a large Latino population, including a call by organisers for a "mass mobilisation" at City Hall at 2:00 p.m. local time (2100 GMT). A separate Pride parade in support of LGBTQ rights — also under assault by the Trump administration — also began Sunday (June 8, 2025) in Hollywood, with organisers posting on Instagram that they were working with local law enforcement to keep the celebrations safe. "Trump is sending 2,000 National Guard troops into LA County -- not to meet an unmet need, but to manufacture a crisis," Mr Newsom posted on X Sunday (June 8, 2025). "He's hoping for chaos so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control. Stay calm. Never use violence. Stay peaceful." Mr Newsom's warning came after Los Angeles was rocked by two days of confrontations that saw federal agents firing flash-bang grenades and tear gas toward crowds angry at the arrests of dozens of migrants. On Sunday (June 8, 2025) pepper spray hung in the air from overnight, AFP reporters said. 'Escalation' Republicans lined up behind Mr Trump to dismiss the pushback by Mr Newsom and other local officials against the National Guard deployment. "I have no concern about that at all," Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson told ABC's "This Week", accusing Mr Newsom of "an inability or unwillingness to do what is necessary". As for threats by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday (June 7, 2025) to send in active-duty Marines on top of the Guard troops, Mr Johnson said he did not see that as "heavy-handed." "We have to be prepared to do what is necessary," he argued. Demonstrators that AFP spoke to said troops were not really being sent in to keep order. "I think it's an intimidation tactic," said Thomas Henning. "These protests have been peaceful. There's no one trying to do any sort of damage right now and yet you have the National Guard with loaded magazines and large guns standing around trying to intimidate Americans from exercising our first amendment rights." Estrella Corral said demonstrators were angry that hard-working migrants who have done nothing wrong were being snatched by masked immigration agents. "This is our community, and we want to feel safe," she told AFP. "Trump deploying the National Guard is ridiculous. I think he's escalating, he's trying to make a show for his agenda." Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said the move demonstrated "Trump's authoritarianism in real time." "Conduct massive illegal raids. Provoke a counter-response. Declare a state of emergency. Call in the troops," he wrote on social media, adding: "Unacceptable." 'Unacceptable' The National Guard — a reserve military — is frequently used in natural disasters, and occasionally in instances of civil unrest, but almost always with the consent of local authorities. It is the first time since 1965 that a President has deployed a National Guard without a request by a state Governor, the former head of Human Rights Watch, U.S. activist Kenneth Roth, posted on X. Mr Trump has delivered on a promise to crack down hard on undocumented migrants — who he has likened to "monsters" and "animals" — since taking office in January. Raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in other U.S. cities have triggered small-scale protests in recent months, but the Los Angeles unrest is the biggest and most sustained against Mr Trump's immigration policies so far. A CBS News poll taken before the Los Angeles protests showed a slight majority of Americans still approved of the immigration crackdown. Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum on Sunday (June 8, 2025) defended migrants living in north of the border. "Mexicans living in the United States are good men and women, honest people who went to the United States to seek a better life for themselves and to support their families. They are not criminals! They are good men and women!" she said.

Centre hands over Bajrang Dal activist Suhas Shetty murder case to NIA
ANI 08 Jun 2025, 20:40 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has handed over the investigation into the murder of former Bajrang Dal activist Suhas Shetty to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), marking a significant move amid rising concerns over possible larger conspiracies behind the incident. Shetty, a prominent right-wing youth leader associated with the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka's coastal belt, was brutally murdered last month in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district. The activist, in his early 30s, was attacked by unidentified assailants while returning home late at night. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The incident triggered widespread protests in the region, with local Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) units alleging a targeted killing. Official sources, privy to the development, told ANI that 'the MHA has handed over the case to the NIA for investigation and registration.' On May 1, a group of people came in two vehicles and blocked the way of Shetty, who was moving in a car with his friends. They then hacked Shetty to death. With the latest arrests by Mangaluru Police, a total of 11 persons have been held so far in the case. (ANI)
