Dental offices don't need to be sterile holding pens. This Beverly Hills project is plush, pink and magical

Can I interest you in a trip to the dentist? No? Not exactly the trip you're looking to win on a game show, is it? Most people, myself included, fear and loathe the dentist. Maybe not the actual people, who are usually sunny and chipper in contrast to their grisly work, but certainly the actual act of being worked on by one of them. The standard dentist's office is sterile, gray and utilitarian. Maybe there's a poster telling you to 'hang in there,' with a picture of a cat gripping a tree branch on it. Maybe they play the most inoffensive radio station they could find while you wait in a seat that looks as though it was borrowed from an airport in the 1990s. It's not an experience designed to inspire or offer a sense of calm. It's a holding pen for a torture chamber.
But what if it wasn't? That's the question Kiyan Mehdizadeh asked when he decided to renovate the 12th floor of a mid-century office building on Wilshire Boulevard for his dental practice in Beverly Hills. When Mehdizadeh — who does mostly cosmetic work like veneers, implants and gum work — committed to opening a third office for his business, he sat down and thought about what he wanted the experience of dental work to feel like. When I saw the space he created with the design firm of Charlap Hyman & Herrero — lush carpets, wooden walls, Italian Dominioni chairs and monochromatic color schemes that recall the best of 1960s and '70s design — I referred to it as opulent. But Mehdizadeh doesn't see it that way.
'Opulent isn't the word I would use,' he told me over Zoom. 'I like the word salubrious, like something that gives life, you know what I mean?'
A typical visit to the dentist doesn't give life as much as it gives anxiety. Someone is going to stick a tube in your mouth, prod you with shining metal implements, and chances are strong you will bleed at some point. Worse yet, if you're having a major surgery done, and you're zonked on anesthetic, a room full of strangers will see you being dragged by your spouse/best friend/co-worker/bored neighbor you promised to buy dinner for on some undetermined night. Your mouth will be full of gauze or cotton balls and your eyes will be half-closed like last call at a sports bar. Mehdizadeh and the designers Adam Charlap Hyman and Andre Herrero — who work in both architecture and interior design and recently designed the 2024 New York Fashion Week dinner for Thom Browne — had an answer for that too: a circular office. Charlap Hyman & Herrero aimed to create a unique space that causes you to experience each and every room differently. Those rooms take you on a journey that inevitably leads to the exit.
You start in the lobby, head to a cozy waiting room that feels more like someone's house than a dentist's office, and then are shuttled to a stark white operating room filled with light from adjacent windows on the other side of the hall. When you're done, you follow the circular path back out to the exit. The halls are lined with Mehdizadeh's personal art collection, which includes works from Cy Twombly, Leonor Fini and more. There's even wallpaper in the bathroom with drawings from erotic artist Tom of Finland, which certainly sets quite a tone for visitors. It's all quite a step up from the 'hang in there' poster. All of this happens in a continuous loop, without you ever being seen by another patient. No matter where you are in the office, you're technically on your way out.
'It was the design team's idea to make this little monolith in the middle of the office with the circular hallway on the outside,' Mehdizadeh says. '[W]hen they started talking about traffic flow, they were thinking of it like the way traffic flows in a hotel hallway or in a large home or something like that. They weren't thinking of it in terms of dentistry — they brought this completely fresh perspective.'
Dentistry should ideally be a bit private, shouldn't it? The invasive nature of it — gaping mouths, drool and other bodily fluid on full display — makes it an activity that makes us all feel deeply vulnerable. You're prone, strapped into one of those reclining chairs and prepped for an excruciating afternoon. At least when you were a child, there were prizes at the end if you were good. I would always task myself with being as still as possible during my cleanings. If I could be the most perfect, cooperative patient, I thought, maybe I can take two prizes from the treasure chest. I never got a second prize. One prize per child was the stated policy and there would be no deviation. Maybe that's why I'm still so unnerved by going to the dentist. Not only is it physically terrifying, but it also reminds me of the limitations of my charm.
There is no reward for being still in Mehdizadeh's dentist chair other than something resembling peace. What Charlap Hyman & Herrero created was a place for reflection. You can lie prone on a plush red couch and ponder the nature of existence. You can be enveloped by a floor-to-ceiling pink room that looks like something out of the Barbie movie. Every room is its own environment, carefully crafted to make you feel something magical. These waiting rooms ideally get you to a place of inner peace before your entire mouth is rattled and you potentially lose sensation in your gums. But once you're out of the chair and on your way, you're one step closer to aesthetic nirvana.
The perfect smile can be the key to self-esteem, to happiness, to personal connection. Even more than our eyes, our smile is the key that unlocks trust amongst strangers. A flashy, warm smile has the power to disarm. We trust dentists so that they can help us earn trust from others. How does a dentist — with their drills and picks and other tools — earn trust from a patient? Well, as Kiyan Mehdizadeh's office proves, having good taste certainly helps.

Every designer has their muses, but this season Christian Siriano took the concept to another level. Enlisting his close friend (and former Project Runway co-star) Heidi Klum to model his new collection, Siriano also based all of his new pieces on the star. 'This idea of a muse was really interesting to me—I've never done a collection inspired by somebody,' said Siriano. 'The whole idea was Heidi's life, and all the things that she would wear clothes to.' When one thinks of Heidi Klum, a glamorous wardrobe likely comes to mind. But for Siriano, it was all about melding her glitzy red carpet-ready aesthetic with something more demure and refined. 'I wanted things that felt romantic, but powerful,' said Siriano. 'Silhouettes that felt sculptural, yet had movement.' For the past few seasons now, the designer has been intentional about paring back his designs, and this season continued in that direction. The opening look, for instance, was his version of a classic black tuxedo—dialed up with a cropped jacket that exposed the abs. Another suiting look was made entirely of black French lace—a sheer construction exposing the skin underneath. For a designer known for theatricality and joie-de-vivre, these were his clear attempts at having fun, though the mostly-black color palette felt unusually somber for Siriano. Other looks, meanwhile, felt more in Klum's wheelhouse—not to mention that of Siriano's red carpet clientele. Consider the corseted gown wrapped in nude and black silk-tulle, or the light blue duchess satin strapless gown with a rosette detail (one of the few looks made in color this season). 'It was hard getting Heidi in color, she loves black,' Siriano said. 'But part of the fun was getting your muse to try something new—which is what we try to do with our customers.'

Model and content creator Nara Smith first crossed paths with fellow IMG model Lucky Blue Smith in 2019. Within a year, the two had quietly tied the knot, started a family, and begun building the life that would later turn them into one of TikTok's most recognizable couples. While they've kept many details of their personal lives private, both have occasionally opened up online or in interviews about their relationship, family life, and being in the public eye. Since their wedding in 2020, they've welcomed three children together and amassed a massive following across social media—largely due to Nara's cooking-from-scratch videos, often shot in their home kitchen. Ariella Maizner is sew talented. At age 6, she took her first sewing class and discovered a natural affinity. At age 9, she launched her own fashion line, Theme, after friends started asking about the feminine frocks she was making and wearing to birthday parties and bat mitzvahs. Initially, she tie-dyed shirts on the roof of her family's Manhattan apartment to sell at boutiques and pop-ups. When she was 10, Rent the Runway invited her to show a collection of sequined hoodies and matching skirts at New York Fashion Week. 6 Ariella Maizner started taking sewing classes at age 6. Now 16, she has her own thriving fashion line, Theme. T H E M E/ Ariella Maizner Now, at age 16, Maizner has a growing brand that's sold at more than 200 boutiques across the country, as well as in department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. Her clothes have been seen on Zaya Wade — the daughter of actress Gabrielle Union and basketball star-turned-Utah Jazz co-owner Dwayne Wade — and TikTok influencer Charli D'Amelio. She's collaborated with the likes of Walmart and State and recently debuted a line of beaded bracelets and charm necklaces for teen mall brand Claire's. 'Ever since I was little, I played dress up,' Maizner, a sophomore at a Manhattan public high school, told The Post. 'I thought, 'Oh, if I can make my own clothes, that would be so cool!'' The first piece she finished was a rainbow-striped maxi dress with a matching belt. Soon, she was sewing herself frocks for her friends' birthday parties and other events — and getting lots of requests from others who wanted clothes like hers. 'That's when I was like, 'I want to make a brand,' because everyone asked me to make things for them,' Maizner said. When she told her mother, Debbi Maizner, then a CMO at JPMorgan Chase, she wanted to start her own line, Debbi was cautious but encouraging. 'I told her: 'We live in the best city in the world. You should meet people and learn from them,'' Debbi — who now handles operations for Theme — told The Post. 'I would bring all the clothes I sewed and lay them all out, and [they would invite] their whole team to come in, and they would just connect me with other people and give me really good advice that motivated me,' Maizner said. 6 Soon, friends were requesting the dresses she was making. Theme is unabashedly girly: tiered ruffled skirts with lace trim, sequin-studded strapless party frocks, frilly tops and tie-dye hoodies and loungewear in pastel hues. Yet Maizner prizes comfort and versatility. Tops come with detachable, adjustable spaghetti straps; skirts have shorts attached to them. One of those designers was Rebecca Minkoff, who has become a key supporter of Maizner's work. 'A really big thing is making sure the clothes are comfortable and the girls feel confident in what they wear,' Maizner said. 'Because I think that's like the biggest thing when you wear clothes: feeling good and feeling yourself. 6 Theme is sold in 200 boutiques across the country, as well as in department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. 'I want to let her be a kid,' she said. Maizner competes on her school's basketball team, runs track and field and plays tennis. Her favorite subjects are math and photography. On weekends, she goes vintage shopping with her friends and hangs out in the West Village. 6 Maizner's designers are girly but unfussy. She sketches silhouettes and sends them, along with color swatches, to the various manufacturers she works with. She tests fabrics and examines every single stitch. Yet Maizner told The Post that she doesn't think of designing as work. 'Whenever I have nothing after school, I want to go to sewing class, because it's my happy place,' she said. 'Honestly, it doesn't feel like a lot to fit in, because I really like doing it. It just feels fun.' 6 When she's not designing clothes, Maizner is an average New York high schooler — playing school sports and hanging out with friends in the West Village. And her rambunctious 7-year-old sister, Noa, is one of her best fit models. 'She gives us really honest advice,' Maizner said with a laugh. 'We always say if she can do a cartwheel in it then it passes the test.'
