Aaliyah Chavez, No. 1 recruit in 2025 class, commits to Oklahoma over South Carolina, UCLA
Aaliyah Chavez, the nation's No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class and the sole uncommitted player left in ESPN's HoopGurlz top-100 ranking, announced her commitment to Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon. Her six finalists had been Texas Tech, Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, South Carolina and UCLA.
'I'm not just joining a program, I'm joining a family,' Chavez said. 'I'm ready to give my all to make this my home and bring a national championship to the city of Norman.'

Chavez, the Gatorade national player of the year, joins a Sooners recruiting class that already includes guard Keziah Lofton and forward Brooklyn Stewart, the 50th and 62nd-ranked players, respectively, in 2025. The group was ranked No. 25 in ESPN's most recent ranking of the top-25 recruiting classes at the beginning of March, but Chavez's commitment should vault them into at least the top 20.
The 5-foot-11 point guard who hails from Lubbock, Texas won the 5A Texas state championship earlier this month with her Monterey High School team. She scored 19 points in the title game en route to being named MVP. With that win, she capped her high school career by totaling 4,796 points, 1,279 rebounds and 771 assists.
Chavez, who also won a 2024 national championship with Cyfair Elite on the EYBL circuit, is a three-level scorer who can finish through contact at the rim. She has good size to defend on the perimeter, and during her high school career, she averaged nearly three steals per game through four seasons.
At Oklahoma, Chavez could see immediate playing time, as the Sooners are graduating Payton Verhulst, Skylar Vann, Lexy Keys and Nevaeh Tot. Chavez will get to play with center Raegan Beers in the post and bolster a perimeter group of Sahara Williams and Zya Vann, who are playing in the Sweet 16 this Saturday against UConn.

Astros DFA Forrest Whitley, former top pitching prospect in baseball
HOUSTON — The Houston Astros designated right-hander Forrest Whitley for assignment on Sunday, putting their tumultuous, nine-year partnership with the pitcher in peril. Once touted as the top starting pitching prospect in baseball, Whitley had withered into a mop-up reliever incapable of procuring outs during lopsided games. He had a 12.27 ERA and six walks across 7 ⅓ major-league innings this season. Advertisement Each of the last three games Whitley entered featured at least a 10-run separation between the two teams. Whitley still surrendered seven earned runs across the 4 ⅔ innings he threw. Houston now has seven days to either trade Whitley or pass him through outright waivers, where all 29 teams will have a chance to claim him. Whitley is still just 27 years old and still wields tantalizing stuff, but his lack of minor-league options may give teams pause when deciding whether to pursue him. Because Whitley has fewer than three years of major-league service time, he would not be able to elect free agency if he clears waivers. If Whitley does clear waivers, Houston would then outright him off the 40-man roster and to Triple-A Sugar Land. The Astros selected Whitley with the 17th overall pick in the 2016 draft and paid him a $3.148 million signing bonus. Before the 2019 season, Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America and MLB Pipeline all labeled Whitley as the sport's best pitching prospect. A freefall ensued, first due to a 50-game drug suspension Whitley incurred before the 2018 season. A slew of injuries followed, including Tommy John surgery in 2020, a lat strain in 2023 and this season, left knee problems that caused two trips to the injured list. 'I told (manager Joe Espada) this, I told the pitching coaches this: I honestly feel embarrassed every time I have to go on the IL or something pops up,' Whitley told The Athletic last month. 'I don't want it to be a reflection of my work ethic. I feel I do everything I can to stay on the field, and it just hasn't worked out lately. 'I feel like I have a certain level of responsibility to give back to the people that have supported me that I don't.' Whitley has thrown just 174 ⅔ innings since 2019. Lesser-touted prospects passed him within Houston's organizational hierarchy and his hold on a 40-man roster spot became more tenuous with each lost season. He entered spring training in February cognizant of his situation, calling this season his 'last chance.' Advertisement 'Every day I throw the baseball, it reminds me of why I keep doing this stuff,' Whitley said last month. 'I know when I go out there, I'm going to be competitive. I know exactly what to do. I have the stuff to get the best big leaguers out. I just have to go out there and do it and make sure I'm out there every time.'

NFL Insider has a bizarre take on Ravens contract talks with QB Lamar Jackson
NFL Insider has a bizarre take on Ravens contract talks with QB Lamar Jackson Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes the Baltimore Ravens are already planning for life after QB Lamar Jackson The best and nicest thing I can say about Pro Football Talk host Mike Florio's take on Lamar Jackson is: "Hey, look, everyone is entitled to their opinion." This past week, Baltimore Ravens GM Eric DeCosta confirmed that contract extension talks have begun between the club and its franchise quarterback. The current contract of the two-time NFL MVP carries a salary cap hit of over $70 million for the 2026 season, and this is one primary reason why reaching a new deal is a big priority for the club. It is widely expected that the new contract will see Jackson once again become the highest-paid player in the NFL. He's currently the 10th highest-paid quarterback in the league, although he did hold the top spot when he signed his current deal back in April of 2023. Florio, however, believes that the Ravens are already thinking about who their next quarterback will be after their current one. He also insinuates that Jackson, 28, will be in such sharp decline in just three years (when he'll be 31) that the team will already be looking to move on from him at that point. Mike Florio:"We're possibly three years away from the Ravens quietly developing an affinity for a quarterback that's entering the NFL and quietly stepping away from Lamar Jackson. ... Every player has a shelf life. ... I guarantee they're already thinking 'how many more years… — Bobby Trosset (@bobbybaltim0re) June 6, 2025 "We're possibly three years away from the Ravens quietly developing an affinity for a quarterback that's entering the NFL and quietly stepping away from Lamar Jackson. ... Every player has a shelf life. ... I guarantee they're already thinking 'how many more years are we gonna get out of Lamar Jackson and when do we need to start thinking about finding our next quarterback?'" The 2024 season was Jackson's best, statistically speaking, and there is every reason to believe he'll keep that going this season, the following season after that, and so on for the near future. He's syncing up well with offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and it should be a while before he starts showing some statistical regression. Thus, Florio's proposed hypothetical shelf-life of only three more seasons is laughably ridiculous. Florio does make one salient point that got drowned out by his nonsense. Yes, the Ravens have thought about when they might need to start looking for a new quarterback. That concept is built right into the offer that they will eventually propose to Jackson. That's normal and natural. Of course, it's also very far down on the list of what the Ravens are currently focused on, regarding the Lamar contract extension talks.
