Rian Johnson Hints at Next Project After 'Knives Out 3'
American filmmaker Rian Johnson, best known for his captivating murder mysteries, Knives Out (2019), and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), may be switching things up his for his next project.
Johnson's upcoming film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, a standalone sequel to his previous two mysteries, will be released in the fall of 2025. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as detective Benoit Blanc, joined by a cast of new faces including Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, and Andrew Scott.
In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, he shared a glimpse into his future plans: "I have something in my head that is a totally different thing that I'm going to do next that's not in the murder mystery world. It's a very different genre."
Despite his intentions for exploration, the director reaffirmed his love for the mystery genre.
"I love murder mysteries, I'll keep doing it as long as I can. Movie wise, I've done three of the Knives Out movies. I'm not burnt out on it - they're so different each one of 'em, that I feel energized."
Johnson has explored new genres before. His earlier work includes Brothers Bloom (2008), a comedic adventure; Looper (2012), a sci-fi action thriller; and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), a sci-fi fantasy epic.
Emphasizing the importance originality and reinvention in his work, he told Vanity Fair in a 2023 interview, "I can't imagine mustering the energy to do a new movie without feeling like it was something that I had never done before."
"If a good filmmaker makes a movie, it's like they've burned the pirate ship into the sea. They've used every idea they have. They're completely washed up on the shore, empty of everything."
While details about his next genre venture remain unknown, Johnson's track record and philosophy suggest that audiences can expect the unexpected.
