‘Lonely' Karan Johar says he can't be at parties with 100 people anymore: ‘Don't want to burden someone else with my thoughts'

Indian Express09-05-2025

Karan Johar grew up isolated from the rest of his film industry friends, but as he got older, he positioned himself at the centre of the action. He has always projected himself as someone who loves to socialise and attend parties, but in the last few years, Karan has started pulling away from that lifestyle. In a new interview, he shared that he is a lonely person who likes to keep his thoughts to himself.
In a chat with Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel, Karan said, 'I am a lonely person. I believe that most people are lonely.' He said that one can be surrounded by a bunch of people but they 'cannot replace your sense of loneliness.' He added, 'If you are a lonely person, you will be a lonely person. And even a relationship might not fill that void. I might be lonely in a relationship. I am a lonely person and I have two beautiful children and an absolutely lovely mother, some great friendships. I am blessed with the friends I have.'
Karan said that he doesn't like to share his regular thoughts with others. 'I don't want to burden someone else with my thoughts. I just like to keep it to myself. When you have a lot of thoughts that you don't share, you invariably become lonely because then your thoughts become your friends. And that loneliness doesn't bother you anymore, you make it a part of yourself. Do I like being lonely? Yes. I am a lonely person but not an unhappy person,' he said.

Karan said that he has been on anxiety medication but therapy does not work for him anymore as he believes that he can be his own therapist. 'I am very in touch with my feelings so even when I did therapy… I have been through anxiety as well. I went on anxiety medication because that needed to be addressed, it was at that juncture in my life that I needed to address it. But I don't do therapy anymore because even though I am not a trained therapist, I can be my own therapist. I can find solutions to my problems and I can even get to the root of my problems and find the cause,' he said.
Karan shared that 'social anxiety has become a part of my life for the last couple of years.' He said that he cannot attend parties anymore and he prefers to leave shortly after he arrives. 'People think I attend parties but I don't go anywhere. I just go to a party and leave in five minutes. I can't stay. I have to stay at my own parties and that's why I have stopped throwing parties. I don't want to meet people. I am very happy with my friends. They come to my home and I visit their home but I don't want to meet 100 people,' he said.
In an earlier chat on Koffee with Karan, Karan had shared that he had a panic attack during the opening of NMACC in Mumbai a few years ago. 'Varun (Dhawan) was staring at me. I was sweating, and I didn't even realise it. He came to me and he held my hand, and said 'Are you okay?' My hands were shaking. He took me to an empty room and I started breathing. I first thought, 'Is this a cardiac arrest? What am I going through?' I got out of my jacket, which was kind of long and elaborate. And I just left like in half an hour,' he shared.

The finger was a bit much, my bad.' Her post highlighted the intense Indianapolis fan rivalry. This animosity isn't a new development. Colts fans harbor long memories of Brady being the orchestrator of their gridiron heartbreaks. From crushing AFC title game losses to playoff eliminations, he consistently dominated Indianapolis. I Took Gronk to the Indy 500 His remarkable 16-4 overall record against them, coupled with 33 touchdowns – more than against any other team outside the AFC East – cemented his role as a recurring villain. It's been a refreshing challenge: Karan Johar on making his debut on audio platform

Mumbai, Filmmaker Karan Johar says hosting his debut podcast series, Live Your Best Life with Karan Johar, turned out to be a 'unique' and 'therapeutic' experience. Through the audio series, audiences will get to listen to the filmmaker's conversations with his inner circle on how to truly live your best life in today's fast-paced world. 'At my core, I'm a storyteller, I'm always excited to experiment with new mediums and formats. Venturing into the world of audio has been a unique experience - it's like discovering a new canvas to paint on. There's a different freedom that comes with audio storytelling. "Without the visual element, I've had to rely on the power of words to weave a narrative that captivates the listener's imagination. It's been a refreshing challenge, and I love those,' the filmmaker told PTI. Johar, the director of commercial blockbusters such as "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...", "My Name Is Khan" and "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani", said he was amazed by the intimacy the audio format offers. "When people listen to podcasts or audio content, they're often doing so in a very personal space – their cars, their homes, their headphones. It's a one-on-one connection, and that intimacy has allowed me to connect with my audience in a way that feels almost therapeutic. "It's been an incredible learning curve, and I feel like I've grown as a storyteller because of it.' The show has an exciting mix of guests, including Konkona Sen Sharma, Richa Chadha, Ali Fazal, and Zakir Khan, among others. Johar said each guest brought their unique perspective and experiences to the show. 'One significant moment where I felt whole, conversing with Zakir Khan. What I admire most about Zakir is his ability to find humour in life's challenges and his candidness about his struggles. He's someone who wears his heart on his sleeve, and his stories are infused with valuable life lessons about perseverance, self-awareness, and the importance of staying true to oneself. I aspire to adopt that for my life,' he said. 'Live Your Best Life with Karan Johar' is available on the Audible app.
