Odisha: Three dead, several injured as stampede breaks out during Jagannath Rath Yatra
At least three persons died and several were injured on Sunday morning after a stampede broke out near a temple in Odisha's Puri district during the Jagannath Rath Yatra festival, The Times of India reported.
The stampede took place between 4 am and 5 am, when a large number of devotees had gathered near the Shree Gundicha Temple to see deities on their chariots that had arrived from the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
Those who died have been identified as Premakanta Mohanty, Basanti Sahoo and Prabhati Das, the newspaper reported.
The injured persons have been admitted to a nearby hospital. Six of them are critical, PTI quoted Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain as saying.
During the Rath Yatra, the sibling deities Balabhadra, Subhadra and Jagannath are carried in chariots from the Jagannath temple to the Gundicha temple located 2.6 kms away, where they stay for nine days.
This year, the festival began on June 27 and will end on July 5.
On Sunday morning, a large number of devotees had gathered at Saradha Bali near the Shree Gundicha Temple to see the deities. Witnesses said that the situation escalated when two trucks carrying wooden logs tried to enter the area amid the crowds, The Times of India reported.
'The narrow congregation site, combined with limited police presence and scattered palm-log ladders near the chariots, created hazardous conditions for devotees,' the newspaper quoted a witness, Chinmay Patra, as saying.
State Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandran announced a high-level inquiry into the stampede and said that action would be taken against those who were found to have been negligent.

Bhubaneswar: In the aftermath of Puri stampede that claimed three lives, Odisha Government on Sunday shunted out Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal while two other senior police officials have been placed under suspension. Collector of Khordha, Chanchal Rana and DIGP of the Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Police, Pinak Mishra have been appointed as Puri Collector and SP respectively, as per a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office following a high-level meeting. DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty. Meanwhile, Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has announced ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs for the family members of three devotees, who lost their lives in the stampede. The Odisha Government has also ordered an administrative inquiry into the tragic mishap under the supervision of the Development Commissioner of Odisha, Anu Garg. 'The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is the pride and honour of the Odia people. Negligence in this matter, even if minor, will not be tolerated. Exemplary action will be taken against all the persons responsible for this,' said CM Majhi. In another important decision, the government has assigned Arvind Agrawal, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Higher Education Department, the charge for overall supervision of the Car Festival in Puri. Following the stampede in Odisha's Puri that claimed the lives of three pilgrims, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended an apology to the devotees of Lord Jagannath, while ordering an immediate investigation into the security lapses. 'Personally, I and my government seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees," wrote CM Majhi on his official X handle. Majhi further expressed condolences to the families of those devotees who lost their lives in the stampede at Saradhabali near Gundicha Temple. He prayed to Lord Jagannath to grant the bereaved family members of the deceased devotees the strength to withstand this profound sorrow. The stampede occurred early in the morning between 4 a.m.- 4.30 a.m. The deceased have been identified as Pravati Das, Premkant Mohanty and Basanti Sahoo.

The deceased have been identified as 36-year-old Basanti Sahu from Bolagarh, 42-year-old Pravati Das from Balipatna, and 80-year-old Premakant Mohanty, also from Balipatna. According to Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain, six of the injured are in critical condition and are being treated at a nearby hospital. What Led To The Chaos? The stampede reportedly began when two trucks carrying sacred ritual materials entered the already-crowded Saradhabali area near the temple. Devotees had been waiting since the early hours to witness the sacred 'Pahuda' ritual, during which the cloth covering the deities' faces is removed. The unexpected entry of the trucks caused panic, pushing the crowd into disarray. Several people were trampled or suffocated in the chaos. No Police Presence At Scene Eyewitnesses claim there was no visible police presence at the time of the stampede. A man, whose wife died in the incident, said the injured had to be carried nearly one kilometre to reach the nearest ambulance. He criticised the absence of timely medical and police support. 'There were no police officers. An ambulance was parked about one km from the accident site, and the injured had to be carried to the vehicle," the victim's husband claimed. Swadhin Kumar Panda, a local resident, alleged poor crowd management and claimed that VIP routes were prioritised while the general public was diverted without proper planning. 'The traffic system was also not good, as many vehicles with unauthorised passes came near the temple. The administration did not control the crowd properly. The biggest problem was the exit gate," he said. The Rath Yatra, which began on Friday, saw the deities – Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra – transported from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, about 2.6 km away. Devotees had gathered in large numbers at Gundicha Temple, believed to be the deities' aunt's home, to catch a glimpse of them. Odisha Govt Takes Action For 'Negligence' Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his sorrow and publicly apologised to devotees. 'Due to the intense eagerness among devotees to have a glimpse of Mahaprabhu at Sharadhabali, an unfortunate incident occurred because of the resulting jostling and chaos," he wrote on X. 'Personally, my government and I seek forgiveness from all Jagannath devotees," he added. In response to the incident, Majhi ordered the transfer of both the Puri District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and SP Vineet Agrawal. Two police officers – DCP Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi – were suspended for negligence. Khurda Collector Chanchal Rana was appointed the new Collector of Puri, while Pinak Mishra took over as SP. Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) With the tragic death of three devotees and at least fifty others injured in a stampede near Sri Gundicha Temple in Odisha's Puri during Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra during wee hours on Sunday sparking shock waves across the state and exposing the gaping holes in the efficiency of government machinery, Odisha Chief Minister has issued a statement tending apology and ordered an administrative inquiry and suspended two police officers of Superintendent of Police rank. The corrective measures and cracking whips on the officers in the charge of Rath Yatra observance were very much on the cards given the fact the BJP Government in the state was on the line of fire due to the inordinate delay in the pulling of chariots, stampede-like situation and indiscriminate distribution of cordon passes during the nine-day annual festival of Lord Jagannath that commenced on Friday. Expressing deep regret over the stampede deaths, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi had earlier tendered an apology over it and owning moral responsibility for today's tragic death. A high-level administrative inquiry has been constituted under the stewardship of the development commissioner (an officer of chief secretary rank) to detect the lapses and negligence on part of the authorities. Besides the Collector and SP Puri has been removed from Puri with immediate effect. Two police officers- deputy commissioner of police, Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee- were placed under suspension for failure on their part to effectively carry out the crowd management. 'The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is the pride of Odisha. Negligence in discharging duty will not be tolerated. All those responsible for today's stampede will be meted out exemplary punishment', Chief Minister Majhi said in a statement. Meanwhile the State Government has announced Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia compensation to bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the stampede. The three victims – Basanti Sahu, Premakant Mohanty and Pravati Das- died of asphyxiation as the crowd trampled over them. "My government and I seek apology from all Jagannath devotees. We express our condolences to the families of those devotees whose lives were lost at Sharadhabali and pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to imbibe them the strength to bear with the loss of their near and dear ones," the CM said in a statement. The Opposition BJD and Congress also strongly criticized the BJP Government here for abysmal failure on part of the government to control the crowd. BJD President Naveen Patnaik assailing the government said the incident laid bare the glaring failure to ensure a safe and orderly Rath Yatra for devotees. 'I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the three devotees who have lost their lives in the tragic stampede at Saradhabali, Puri and I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannatha for the swift recovery of the devotees injured in this devastating incident', Naveen Patnaik stated in 'X'. The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee Bhakta Charan Das also commenting on the same line lambasted the government. The mishap took place at around 4.20 am in front of three chariots of Lord Jagannath and his His siblings—Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Poor crowd management and inadequate police deployment resulted in the tragic mishap. There was no presence of police or security forces anywhere near the chariots as the crowd surged to catch a glimpse of the deities during morning hours. It was some of the devotees and local youths who tried to control the crowd and saved several people from getting stuck in the stampede.
