Plumb Alley Day draws thousands while raising money for Kiwanis Club of Abingdon
ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — Plumb Alley Day, the biggest annual fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon, drew thousands of community members downtown Saturday.
The Kiwanis Club of Abingdon told News Channel 11 that money raised during the event directly supports children's groups in the area. According to the club, this year marked the 43rd annual Plumb Alley Day, and around 5,000 people were expected to attend.
The festival featured food and more than 100 craft vendors, live music, a dance performance, children's activities and a massive yard sale sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.
Museum of Butler hosts 25th Anniversary Celebration
President of the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon Phil Dipietro said the money raised will be seen in the community, benefiting kids.
'All that money goes back into the kids of Washington County [Va.],' he said. 'We sponsor such things as the reading program that's put on by the Washington County Public Libraries. We help refresh areas that kids go to, regular playgrounds, sporting activities, members of certain schools that go on field trips. We like to sponsor those types of activities and so many more that go on every single year.'
Dipietro said anyone who may want to assist in making local kids happy and healthy can join the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon.
'If there's anybody in the community that would like to become a member of the Kiwanis Club, we're always welcoming new members. WWII Veteran recalls landing on Utah Beach in Normandy
ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — 81 years ago, World War II allies invaded Normandy, liberating France and Western Europe, and laying the path to victory. 'We came in on a landing craft with the front down, and we jumped into the water,' Army veteran Don Parker recalled of landing on Utah Beach a few days later. 'They had some – we'll call them cannons, they may have been 88s. That's what finally hit me. Well, it wasn't exactly comfortable, I don't know how else to describe it. It was bloody, it was messy.' Landing in Normandy is something most people read about in history books, but Parker lived it. 'We crawled in front of Patton's tanks, and we probed with our bayonets to get the pressure bombs that were down under there. We had to get and disable the bombs,' he said. 'Patton brought his tanks across after that… He didn't lose any tanks there anyway.' The rifleman remembers capturing a German outpost and earning a Bronze Star. 'I didn't think the choices were very good, but I had enough patriotism that it had to be done,' he said. 'It was necessary. That's about the only sensible thing to say. 'I was in college, I wanted to stay there. But when they drafted me, I didn't run to Canada,' he said. 'They want me? I'll go. And I went.' Parker was later injured, almost losing his foot to gangrene. 'I was digging a foxhole, and a shell come in and [my feet were in fragments]. And then when they got me back to the surgeon, he looks at me and puts his hand on my shoulder and says, 'I'm sorry, son, but I have to cut off your left foot,'' Parker recalled. 'They were right, I was going to die, but I mean the timing was wrong because I've still got the foot and that was some years ago.' Mendota man pleads guilty to witness tampering
ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — A Mendota man pleaded guilty to assaulting a fellow inmate to prevent them from testifying during a federal investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday. According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office Western District of Virginia, McKinley Lee Shaffer, a 'self-described gang member,' pleaded guilty to one count of using physical force against a witness regarding the testimony and potential cooperation in an official proceeding. Shaffer, 32, now faces a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in prison. 'The witness was involved in a federal investigation involving a March 2024 shots-fired incident in Abingdon and a related federal investigation,' the release stated. Subscribe Now On Nov. 24, 2024, Shaffer reportedly assaulted his fellow inmate at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority in Abingdon. Surveillance video shows Shaffer punching the victim without warning, and a physical altercation ensued. 'In a later recorded video 'visit' with another person, Shaffer stated he was a gang member, and that the victim had robbed an 'Aryan Princess' and 'told on her' for shooting at the victim,' the release said. 'Shaffer was referring to the March 2024 shots-fired incident in Abingdon. Shaffer said that he 'had to go beat him up.'' Carter County Detention Center receives state accreditation
CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Carter County Detention Center was awarded a Tier 1 Accreditation status by the Tennessee Corrections Institute (TCI) on Wednesday. According to a news release from the Carter County Sheriff's Office, the detention center's accreditation marks the first milestone achievement through the TCI. Tree trunk plows into Carter County home 'Our staff has worked diligently to meet the required standards to achieve accreditation, and I am thrilled to see their hard work rewarded,' Jail Administrator Captain Matt Patterson said in the release. TCI evaluates accreditation based on employee training, agency policies, availability of programs to reduce inmate recidivism, available medical services for inmates and the jail's physical facility, the news release stated. 'Captain Patterson and his staff worked tirelessly to meet these standards and achieve Tier 1 Accreditation by the TCI for the first time in the department's history,' Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said in the release. 'This achievement is all the more meaningful and impressive when you look at where this facility was three years ago, when it was on the cusp of losing state certification. Having the right leadership team in place, combined with a commitment from the County Commission to invest in our employees, changed the trajectory of this facility and led to this accomplishment today.'
