Buc-ee's opens store an hour from New Orleans

Axiosa day ago

Buc-ee's opens its massive travel center Monday in Mississippi just off Interstate 10 in Pass Christian.
Why it matters: It's the popular chain's closest location to New Orleans (it's about one hour away) as it works on building its first two stores in Louisiana.
The big picture: Buc-ee's is a cult favorite for road trippers. It's known for clean bathrooms, fresh food and beaver-themed merchandise.
The Mississippi location has all the classics, the company says, including Texas barbeque, jerky, fudge, kolaches, pastries and snacks.
It also has 120 gas pumps and 24 EV charging stations, according to a press release.
The store opens at 6am and will be open 24 hours, seven days a week.
By the numbers: It's the company's first store in Mississippi and has one of its largest footprints at 74,000 square feet.
Its largest store, which it claims is the world's largest convenience station, is in Luling, Texas, at 75,593 square feet.
Until now, the closest one to New Orleans was in Alabama near Mobile.
Zoom out: Buc-ee's is a Texas-based chain that has been expanding its footprint nationally.
Its first Louisiana store is expected to open in Ruston late next year, a company spokesperson tells Axios.
A Lafayette store is projected to open in 2027, the spokesperson says.
If you go: Expect crowds and traffic on I-10 near the new store.
The Pass Christian location is at 8245 Firetower Road, which is accessed via exit 24 (Menge Avenue) on I-10.

Why AST SpaceMobile Stock Is Skyrocketing This Week

Jeff Bezos visited Space Mobile's Texas headquarters. A picture from the visit on social media fueled speculation that AST's relationship with Bezos' companies could grow. A public spat between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump could leave the door open for other space companies to win some of SpaceX's contracts. 10 stocks we like better than AST SpaceMobile › Shares of AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) are moving higher this week, up 33.9% as of 2 p.m. ET from last Friday's close. The gain comes as the S&P 500 gained 1.5% and the Nasdaq-100 gained 2.2%. Earlier in the week, a board member posted a picture to social media that fueled speculation of a possible partnership with Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. The stock also received a boost after yesterday's public spat between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. After Bezos visited the company's Texas headquarters, AST board member Adriana Cisneros posted a picture of Bezos, AST CEO Abel Avellan, and herself to Instagram with the caption, "Amazing things are happening at AST & Science + Blue Origin." This fueled speculation that Blue Origin, Bezos' space exploration company, could be looking to create a closer relationship with AST. The company already has a contract with AST to launch 45 satellites, but a more formal partnership would be a game changer for AST SpaceMobile. Elon Musk and President Donald Trump escalated a public spat yesterday. What began when Musk took to X to criticize Trump's flagship "Big, Beautiful Bill" quickly turned personal and included Trump threatening to cancel contracts with Musk's SpaceX. If this were to happen, it could leave the door open for AST SpaceMobile to, at least partially, fill the void. This is all speculation; nothing is concrete. That being said, both of these possibilities represent a huge upside for AST. For investors with a high risk appetite, AST can be a solid pick. However, be aware that there is a significant risk. The company has a long way to go to justify its valuation. Apparel brand Oak + Fort to restructure amid tariff woes

VANCOUVER - Canadian apparel brand Oak + Fort says it has obtained creditor protection as it works to restructure the business. The Vancouver-based company says the move is necessary because U.S. tariffs have joined other price pressures and led to a decline in consumer confidence and spending. The tariffs arrived after Oak + Fort pushed to open 26 new Canadian and U.S. stores in the last four years, which the company says resulted in a reduced and ultimately insufficient investment in its e-commerce platforms. Court documents show the company owes more than $25 million to creditors including some landlords who didn't receive May rent payments. Oak + Fort says it will continue to operate stores and an e-commerce business during the restructuring. The retailer has hired Reflect Advisors LLC to assist with the restructuring. Oak + Fort was founded in 2010 as an online boutique that eventually expanded to 42 stores in Canada and the U.S. selling womenswear, menswear, accessories, jewelry and home goods. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 7, 2025.

Support Black Businesses! Chanté Griffin Releases Free ‘Buy Black' Financial Toolkit

To commemorate Juneteenth, award-winning journalist and author Chanté Griffin is nudging consumers to support Black businesses all year long and she's making it easy through her 'Buy Black' Financial Toolkit, a free, step-by-step guide to buying Black throughout the year. When Juneteenth originated in the 1860s, following the announcement of the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, the celebration of freedom encompassed not only physical independence but also economic freedom for Black people. In the wake of recent attacks on DEI by the Trump administration, increased support for Black businesses is needed now, more than ever. According to a press release, Griffin's 'Buy Black' Financial Toolkit gives consumers a detailed guide on practical ways to buy from Black businesses every month of the year. A previous report by USA Today revealed Black Americans make up about 12.4% of the U.S. population. However, Black business owners only account for 2.4 percent of all employer-firm owners. Griffin's financial toolkit is a handy resource to combat these statistics and recent obstacles that Black entrepreneurs face following the Trump administration's orders to roll back DEI initiatives in January. 'The work of increasing economic justice and Black wealth is ours,' said Griffin. 'Buy Black' was created with the consumers in mind. It builds on the numerous organizations that have created 'Buy Black' guides throughout the years. The financial toolkit is organized each month by a theme and checklists of ways to support it. It includes streamlined purchasing options and strategies to support year-round. 'It's easy to order items from Amazon and to pick up hair products at the closest beauty supply store, but we must be intentional—and sometimes inconvenienced—for Black businesses to thrive,' said Griffin. Check out the monthly themes in Griffin's 'Buy Black' Financial Toolkit, starting this Juneteenth! June: Personal Care and Fitness July: Transportation, Travel, and Vacation August: Outdoor Recreation September: Education and Learning October: Groceries, Food and Restaurants November: Household Items December: Giving January: Housing and Home Improvement February: Health and Legal March: Spring Cleaning and Woman-Owned Businesses April: Financial Services and Investments May: Gifts Griffin cautioned that if consumers fail to support Black businesses today, they may not exist tomorrow.
